Vicious dogs: the antisocial behaviors and psychological characteristics of owners.

Each year, 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs. Of those bitten each year, 386,000 are seriously injured and some killed. Consequently, many insurance companies refuse to issue homeowners insurance to owners of specific breeds of dogs considered "vicious" or high risk of causing injury. This study examined whether vicious dog owners were different on antisocial behaviors and personality dimensions. A total of 869 college students completed an anonymous online questionnaire assessing type of dog owned, criminal behaviors, attitudes towards animal abuse, psychopathy, and personality. The sampl

Personality dimensions in eating disorders and their relevance for subtyping.

Personality dimensions and psychopathological symptoms were assessed in 50 female patients hospitalized for the treatment of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa and in 19 healthy female controls of similar age. Restricting anorexia nervosa patients, who had lost weight by consistently reducing their food intake, reported significantly greater self-control, inhibition of emotionality, and conscientiousness than controls or bulimia nervosa patients, before and after the data were corrected for depressive and eating pathology. Both nonbulimic and bulimic anorexia nervosa patients expressed strong

Long-term course and outcome in unipolar affective and schizoaffective psychoses.

Of 301 first-time admitted patients with delusional psychoses, 50 met DSM-III criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD), 33 schizoaffective disorder, depressive type (SADD), and 94 schizophrenia. At personal follow-up after 3-39 (mean 22) years, the SADD group was recorded in between on course and outcome variables, but closer to MDD. The findings in MDD and SADD were respectively: remission 66% vs. 42%, personality disorders 14% vs. 12%, anxiety disorder or alcohol abuse 2% vs. 6%, psychosis 18% vs. 36% (with bipolar development in 2% vs. 6%, paranoid disorder 2% vs. 3%, schizophrenia 4% v

Psychological correlates of hostility among patients undergoing coronary angiography.

The Cook-Medley Hostility (Ho) scale (Cook & Medley, 1954) has been associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). There is relatively little information about the psychosocial correlates of the Ho scale in clinical or adult populations, however. In this study, 132 patients (mean age = 53 years) referred for diagnostic coronary angiography completed a battery of self-report questionnaires including the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), Hopkins Symptom Check List (SCL-90), State-Trait Personality Inventory (STPI), Type A Self-Rating Inventory (TASRI), and Per

[Psychosomatic reactions comorbid with ischemic heart disease: psychogenically provoked infarctions and myocardial ischemia].

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) with psychogenic provoked myocardial infarctions (MI) and myocardial ischemic disease (MID) is considered as a psychosomatic disorder. Seventy patients, 17 female and 53 male, aged between 39-77 years, mean age 61.2 +/- 9.9 years, were observed. The presence of both somatic (prolonged atherosclerotic lesion of coronary arteries) and mental (personality disorders with symptoms of reactive lability under psychic trauma influence) predisposition is obligate for manifestation or exacerbation of this IHD type. It is suggested that atherosclerotic coronary vessels affect

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures: so-called psychiatric comorbidity and underlying defense mechanisms.

In Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) do not have a unique classification as they can be found within different categories: conversion, dissociative, and somatization disorders. The ICD-10, instead, considers PNES within dissociative disorders, merging the dissociative disorders and conversion disorders, although the underlying defense mechanisms are different. The literature data show that PNES are associated with cluster B (mainly borderline) personality disorders and/or to people with depressive or anxiety disorder

Sociocultural differences on hostility in alexithymic persons.

A recent comment by I. Alex Rubino on the personality correlates of alexithymia implied that there are several important areas for further discussion. Sociocultural differences in ethnicity (Japanese and Italian) may need to be taken into account for an understanding of the divergent findings.

Buspirone therapy for Type A behavior, hostility, and perceived stress in cardiac patients.

Hostility is considered to be a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Despite the findings of reduced serotonergic function and effectiveness of treatment with serotonergic agents in similar symptom complexes, there have been no attempts at using serotonergic psychopharmacologic agents to treat this population. We conducted an 8-week open trial of 10 type A, irritable men with coronary artery disease and no diagnosable psychiatric (axis I) condition to examine the effects of buspirone on these subjects. Buspirone appears to significantly reduce type A behavior, hostility, anxiety, impatienc

A controlled study of type A behavior and psychophysiologic responses to stress in anorexia nervosa.

Adolescents and young adults meeting DSM-III criteria for anorexia nervosa (n = 13) and atypical eating disorders (n = 7) were compared with weight-recovered anorectics (n = 6) and normal weight controls (n = 11) using a type-A structured interview and a computerized stress procedure. Heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiographic changes were monitored. Anorexia nervosa subjects demonstrated significantly more type-A characteristics than controls. The emaciated and weight-recovered anorectics had elevated hostility scores on the type-A interview, which has been shown in recent studies o

Type A behavior in married couples in a family practice population.

Type A behavior is characterized by status insecurity, hyperaggressiveness, free-floating hostility, time urgency, and self-destructive tendencies. In this cross-sectional study, a sample of 72 married couples from a family practice residency patient population completed self-administered questionnaires assessing the relationship between behavior type and perceived stress, social support, health perceptions, psychosomatic symptoms, health habits, marital discord, and family function. Type A men slept less, had more headaches, and reported more job stress than type B men. Type A women tended to

Set and setting predict psychopathology, wellbeing and meaningfulness of psychedelic experiences: a correlational study.

BACKGROUND: In psychedelic therapy, the importance of set and setting is a fundamental but under-researched assumption. The aim of this study is to correlate variables of set (psychedelic use motivation) and setting (psychedelic use location and type of companion) with psychopathology, wellbeing and personality variables. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A sample of 1022 participants of the Spanish-speaking population was collected through an online survey. A novel instrument, the Psychedelic Use Scale (PUS), was developed to measure substance use variables of LSD, mescaline, psilocybin, DMT, 5-M

Major depression, dysthymia and depressive personality disorder.

The separation of persistent depression into meaningful and useful subcategories, including major depression, dysthymia, recurrent brief depression, and depressive personality disorder, is the subject of much debate. Depressions can be grouped on the basis of their type and severity of symptoms, aetiology, clinical course, or their association with other psychiatric illnesses. Several investigators have conducted epidemiologic and family studies to evaluate the prevalence of depressive disorders, their diagnostic stability over time, and the amount of overlap among the disorders. Although prog

An examination of psychiatric comorbidities as a function of gender and substance type within an inpatient substance use treatment program.

BACKGROUND: There are elevated rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders among individuals with substance dependence; however, little research examines these rates within inpatient settings, particularly in relation to gender and type of substance. The current study aimed to fill this gap. METHOD: 465 patients (71.4% male) were recruited from an inpatient substance use treatment facility from 2006 to 2009. These patients were interviewed and diagnosed using the Structure Clinical Interview for DSM-IV and the Diagnostic Interview for Personality Disorders. RESULTS: 60.6% of patients with substa

Quality of Life in Cohabitants of Patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa: A Cross-sectional Study.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that impairs patients' physical and mental health. However, few studies have considered the consequences of HS on cohabitants. The aims of this study were to explore the impact of HS on the quality of life (QOL) of cohabitants and to assess potentially associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted and patients with HS and their cohabitants were invited to participate. Validated questionnaires were used to measure QOL, anxiety and depression, type D personality and sexual dysfunction. The clinical variables of patients

The Index of Consensual Sexual Sadism (ICSS): Scale development, validation, measurement invariance, and nomological network comparisons with everyday sadism.

Sexual sadism has long been of interest to scholars and clinicians in psychology, and most research on sexual sadism has focused on forensic samples. However, recently, research has uncovered the existence of sexual sadism in general populations. Measures designed to assess sexual sadism in the general population are lacking. To address this gap, we created the Index of Consensual Sexual Sadism (ICSS) and performed some initial psychometric testing of its structure, measurement invariance, validity (e.g., distinguishment from everyday sadism), and reliability. In this preregistered study, sepa

Determinants of the development of post-traumatic stress disorder, in the general population.

PURPOSE: To assess (1) the lifetime prevalence of exposure both to trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); (2) the risk of PTSD by type of trauma; and (3) the determinants of the development of PTSD in the community. METHODS: The Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies was administered to a random sample of an urban area (N = 3,691). RESULTS: (1) The lifetime prevalence estimates of exposure to trauma and PTSD were 21.0 and 5.0%; respectively, with a twice as high prevalence of PTSD in women compared to men despite a similar likelihood of exposure in the two sexes; (2) Sexual abus

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures are episodes of movement, sensation, or behaviors that are similar to epileptic seizures but do not have a neurologic origin; rather, they are somatic manifestations of psychologic distress. Patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures frequently are misdiagnosed and treated for epilepsy. Video-electroencephalography monitoring is preferred for diagnosis. From 5 to 10 percent of outpatient epilepsy patients and 20 to 40 percent of inpatient epilepsy patients have psychogenic nonepileptic seizures. These patients inevitably have comorbid psychiatric illnesse

Psychometrics of the Iowa and Berlin Gambling Tasks: Unresolved Issues With Reliability and Validity for Risk Taking.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is one of the most prominent paradigms employed for the assessment of risk taking in the laboratory, and it was shown to distinguish between various patient groups and controls. The present study was conducted to test the psychometric characteristics of the original IGT and of a new gambling task variant for assessing individual differences. Two studies were conducted with adults of the general population (n = 220) and with adolescents (n = 389). Participants were also tested on multiple measures of working memory capacity, fluid intelligence, personality traits as

Perfectionism dimensions and dependency in relation to personality vulnerability and psychosocial adjustment in patients with coronary artery disease.

The present study sought to illuminate self-criticism and personal standards dimensions of perfectionism and dependency as specific cognitive-personality vulnerability factors that might contribute to a better understanding of numerous psychosocial problem areas that are relevant to coronary artery disease (CAD). One hundred and twenty-three patients diagnosed with clinically significant CAD completed self-report questionnaires. Zero-order correlations and factor analysis results revealed that self-criticism was primarily related to personality vulnerability (aggression/anger/hostility, Type D

MMPI profiles of Turkish headache sufferers.

The investigations of personality traits have been the issue of many studies on patients with headache. Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is the most popular assessment instrument used in these studies. MMPI responses of 36 cases (14 male, 22 female) with tension headache and 44 cases (11 male, 33 female) with migraine headache had been compared with 36 nonheadache controls (12 male, 24 female). Because of the inadequate number of male subjects, the statistical analyses were made between female groups. The results obtained revealed that subjects in the tension-type headache gr
