Per-rectal ultrasonography was performed on 40 patients in whom a diagnosis of prostatitis had been made on the basis of symptoms and signs of prostatic inflammation confirmed by bacteriology, microscopy or pH changes of expressed prostatic secretion. Certain ultrasonic features were present in all patients to a variable degree. A change in volume and weight of the prostate could be an indicator of treatment response.

The systematic prenatal diagnosis of 5 cases of urinary tract malformations out of 2 500 pregnancies in 1982 in a special care maternity, or 2 per 1 000 is compared with the discovery of 10 cases in 28 months in 17 960 foetuses, or 0.55 per 1 000 whereas the overall frequency varies from 0.3 to 5.25 per 1 000 in infants. A study of 20 patients with adrenal mass lesions shown on computed tomography (CT) is reported. CT accurately localized a unilateral adrenal mass in 12 patients with Cushing's syndrome, primary hyperaldosteronism and phaeochromocytoma. Unsuspected primary or metastatic neoplasms of the adrenal glands were detected in 8 patients who underwent CT for other reasons. The accuracy of ultrasonic cholecystography is well established. However, oral cholecystography remains the primary screening examination. Ultrasonic and oral cholecystograms were performed in 100 consecutive patients to determine if ultrasound could be used as a primary screening procedure, particularly in patients with acute right-upper-quadrant pain, suggestive of acute cholecystitis. Ultrasound compared favorably with oral cholecystography in accuracy and specificity. It was also cost-effective, saving one to two days of hospitalization.

Ultrasonically-guided percutaneous nephrostomy using the Seldinger technique was attempted on 24 kidneys in 19 patients with obstructive hydronephrosis. Seventeen of the procedures were successful, 4 failed, and in 3 the catheter slipped out of the renal pelvis 1-48 hours after insertion. The procedure is simple and independent of renal function. Postrenal uremia can be relieved, infected hydronephrosis drained prior to elective surgery, and urinary parameters assessed. Thirty-one patients with intrascrotal disease process have been studied with the Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter to determine if testicular torsion can be differentiated from acute epididymitis when clinical characteristics are ambivalent. In all instances of proved torsion there was a loss of blood flow in the involved testes, whereas in acute epididymitis or other epididymal and gonadal diseases blood flow ranged from normal to hyperemic.
