Eleven patients with anterior and deep orbital masses had A-scan ultrasonography. The ultrasonograms were all similar and demonstrated a dermoid-like pattern of low internal reflectivity and a high-rising, double-peaked posterior surface spike. Although the postoperative pathologic findings in seven cases confirmed the clinical diagnosis of dermoid cyst, other lesions, such as epidermoid cyst, sebaceous cyst, Graves's myopathy, and Ewing's sarcoma were found to show a similar ultrasonographic pattern. This stresses the importance of computed tomography in the diagnosis of orbital tumors.

The umbilical arteries, urachus, and umbilical vein were scanned ultrasonographically in 13 clinically normal foals that ranged in age from 6 hours to 4 weeks. Sonograms were obtained using a 7.5-MHz sector scanner transducer placed across the midline of the ventral portion of the foal's abdominal wall. Sonograms of 45 consecutive patients with histologically proven acute cholecystitis were retrospectively reviewed. The following sonographic criteria were evaluated for the presence of: thickening of the gallbladder wall; enlargement of the transverse diameter; gallbladder pressure pain (Murphy's sign); local hypoechoic areas in the bladder wall, and finally the indistinct internal appearance. Ultrasound imaging of 20 cases of progressive muscular dystrophy and 10 cases of suspected infantile spinal muscular atrophy in children was … was abnormal in both types of neuromuscular problems, the controls giving a normal muscle echogram. Ultrasonography was helpful in detection of unequivocal changes in our cases with mild clinical disability. It had a close correlation with changes in gross muscle architecture, as seen on muscle biopsy.

Reference curves for the growth of the uterus and ovaries were established for prepubertal and postpubertal girls by examining 34 healthy schoolgirls of age 7, 10, 13, and 17 years by grayscale ultrasound. Uterine volume increased from mean 0.9 cm3 at 7 years to 53 cm3 at 17 years. The ovaries could not be detected by ultrasound in girls of 7 years, but ovarian volume increased from mean 0.7 cm3 at 10 years to 5.8 cm3 at 17 years.
