Past behavior predicts future protection: uncovering key drivers of influenza vaccine acceptance in Italy in the post-pandemic era.

OBJECTIVES: Influenza is a seasonal viral respiratory disease causing significant global mortality but preventable through vaccination. Despite WHO recommendations, vaccination rates in Italy remain low due to mistrust, misinformation, and vaccine hesitancy. This study investigates determinants of influenza vaccine uptake in the post-COVID-19 era to identify barriers and guide targeted interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a representative sample of 8067 Italian adults between December 2024 and January 2025 through an anonymous online questionnaire. The survey expl

Association between vaccination prescription program and herpes zoster vaccine knowledge, intention, and coverage among residents aged ≥50 in Zhejiang Province: Repeated cross-sectional surveys.

The herpes zoster (HZ) vaccine has been available in China for a relatively short period, and vaccination coverage remains low. Zhejiang Province began to implement the vaccination prescription program in 35 counties from May 2024 under the background of integrated medical and preventive healthcare. This study aimed to evaluate the association between this program and changes in HZ vaccine knowledge, intention, and coverage among residents aged ≥50 y through repeated cross-sectional surveys. A multi-stage convenience sampling method was used to recruit participants before and after the interve

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Subjective Norms Associated with COVID-19 Vaccination among Pregnant Women in Kenya: An Online Cross-Sectional Pilot Study Using WhatsApp.

COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy has been recommended, but the perceptions related to uptake remain unexplored. This pilot study aimed to explore how perceptions influence COVID-19 vaccine uptake among a sample of 115 pregnant women in Kenya, recruited via WhatsApp. Data were collected using an adapted online questionnaire between May and October 2022. Logistic analyses assessed the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination uptake and the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) constructs: attitudes and subjective norms. COVID-19 vaccination coverage was 73%, with vaccine hesitancy estimated at 4

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people living with HIV: a cross-sectional study in Caracas, Venezuela.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted multiple health services, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing, care, and treatment services, jeopardizing the achievement of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS 90-90-90 global target. While there are limited studies assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Latin America, there are none, to our knowledge, in Venezuela. This study aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic among PLHIV seen at the outpatient clinic of a reference hospital in Ven

Vaccines Against Pneumonia: Current Updates.

Pneumonia is one of the global leading causes of mortality and impacts all age groups. Both viruses and bacteria can contribute to the development of lower respiratory tract infections and incidences of each vary in different age groups and immune statuses. Vaccines exist to target many of the pathogens associated with pneumonia including influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus, pneumococcal pneumonia, pertussis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b. Vaccinations have demonstrated positive effects at reducing rates of infection and hospitalizations related to pneumonia. However, vaccinat

A time-delayed epidemic model for control of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5Nx) with vaccination, compliance, and non-pharmaceutical interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Highly pathogenic avian influenza poses an ongoing zoonotic risk with the potential for severe human outbreaks. Existing epidemic models often assume immediate vaccine effectiveness and homogeneous populations, which may overestimate the impact of vaccination during the early phase of an outbreak. This study develops a time-delayed epidemic model to examine how vaccination timing, delayed immune protection, behavioral heterogeneity, and non-pharmaceutical interventions jointly shape the transmission dynamics of a hypothetical human outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5

Recommended Vaccines for Immunocompetent Older Adults: A Work Group Report of the AAAAI Asthma, Allergic & Immunologic Diseases in Older Adults Committee.

Adults 65 years or older are more susceptible to infectious diseases, representing a significant public health concern worldwide. Although newer vaccines have been developed for older adults, confusion over frequently changing guidelines often contributes to vaccine hesitancy and low vaccination rates. An American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology work group was convened to provide a clearer summary of these guidelines from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This article reviews the epidemiology and pathology of key infect

Vaccine-Induced Functional Neurological Disorders in the Covid-19 Era.

The large amount of information available to the public regarding vaccines against Covid-19 coupled with pandemic stress and increased somatic attention could potentially precipitate development of functional neurological disorders (FNDs) following vaccination. A growing number of reports indicate that functional symptoms may follow Covid-19 vaccination, similar to those observed with other vaccines previously. We review previously reported cases of FND following vaccination against Covid-19 and present three additional cases. While two patients presented to the Emergency Department with funct

Vaccination strategies for solid organ transplant candidates and recipients: insights and recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccines save lives. They are integral to reducing the morbidity and mortality of vaccine-preventable infections in solid organ transplant recipients. Pre-transplant vaccination provides a unique opportunity for administration of live, viral vaccines, and enhanced vaccine efficacy, compared to the post-transplant period with decreased vaccine response due to immunosuppression. AREAS COVERED: We discuss a general approach to pre- and post-transplant vaccination in solid organ transplant candidates and recipients. We then review guideline statements and recent literature related t

COVAD survey 2 long-term outcomes: unmet need and protocol.

Vaccine hesitancy is considered a major barrier to achieving herd immunity against COVID-19. While multiple alternative and synergistic approaches including heterologous vaccination, booster doses, and antiviral drugs have been developed, equitable vaccine uptake remains the foremost strategy to manage pandemic. Although none of the currently approved vaccines are live-attenuated, several reports of disease flares, waning protection, and acute-onset syndromes have emerged as short-term adverse events after vaccination. Hence, scientific literature falls short when discussing potential long-ter

The web and public confidence in MMR vaccination in Italy.

Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage in Italy has been decreasing starting from 2012 and, at the present, none of the Italian regions has achieved the goal of 95% coverage target. A decision of the Court of Justice of Rimini in March 2012 that awarded vaccine-injury compensation for a case of autism has been indicated as a probable trigger event leading to a reduction of vaccine confidence in Italy. The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between MMR vaccination coverage to online search trends and social network activity on the topic "autism and MMR vaccine", dur

When do persuasive messages on vaccine safety steer COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and recommendations? Behavioural insights from a randomised controlled experiment in Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine safety is a primary concern among vaccine-hesitant individuals. We examined how seven persuasive messages with different frames, all focusing on vaccine safety, influenced Malaysians to accept the COVID-19 vaccine, and recommend it to individuals with different health and age profiles; that is, healthy adults, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions. METHODS: A randomised controlled experiment was conducted from 29 April to 7 June 2021, which coincided with the early phases of the national vaccination programme when vaccine uptake data were largely un

COVID-19 Healthcare Inequity: Lessons Learned from Annual Influenza Vaccination Rates to Mitigate COVID-19 Vaccine Disparities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has infected 33 million Americans and resulted in more than 600,000 deaths as of late Spring 2021. Black, Indigenous, and Latinx (BIL) people are disproportionately infected, hospitalized, and dying. Effective vaccines were rapidly developed and have been widely available in the United States since their initial rollout in late 2020-early 2021 but vaccination rates in BIL communities have remained low compared with non-BIL communities. Limited access to the vaccine, lack of customized information, and mistrust of the medical system, all contribute to vaccine hesitancy and
