Noninvasive Assessment of Hepatitis C Virus Infected Patients Using Vibration-Controlled Transient Elastography.

Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the leading causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Surveillance of these patients is an essential strategy in the prevention chain, including in the pre/post-antiviral treatment states. Ultrasound elastography techniques are emerging as key methods in the assessment of liver diseases, with a number of advantages such as their rapid, noninvasive, and cost-effective characters. The present paper critically reviews the performance of vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) in the assessment of HCV patients. VCTE …

Effects of different vibration frequencies on spinal cord reflex circuits and thermoalgesic perception.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the effect of different vibration frequencies on spinal cord excitability and heat pain perception. We hypothesized that the effects of vibration on spinal cord reflexes, and, also those on heat pain perception, depend on vibration frequency. METHODS: In 9 healthy subjects, we applied vibration over the tibialis anterior muscle at three different frequencies (50, 150, or 250 Hz) on spinal cord reflex excitably, tested with the H reflex and the T wave in the soleus muscle, as well as on sensory and pain perception, tested by measuring warm perception (WT) and heat pain p…

Effects of synchronised engine sound and vibration presentation on visually induced motion sickness.

Driving simulator usage is often accompanied by motion sickness, and techniques for its prevention are not yet established. To reduce visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), we investigated the effects of synchronised presentation of engine sounds and motorcycle vibration on VIMS. A total of 80 participants experienced a driving scene with a head-mounted display for 5 minutes with or without synchronised presentation of engine sound and vibration. The results showed that VIMS scores, as measured by the Fast Motion Sickness scale, were significantly lower in participants who experienced the dr…

Rejuvenation of Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses by Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Elastic Deformation.

The rejuvenation of Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) by ultrasonic vibration-assisted elastic deformation (UVEF) was studied herein. The UVEF-treated samples demonstrate an obvious rejuvenation and have a higher relaxation enthalpy and a smaller range of supercooled liquid regions than the as-cast samples. The fracture of the rejuvenated amorphous alloy is mainly ductile fracture, and shear deformation occurs in the deformation region. It is also found that as the amplitude increases, the free volume of the rejuvenated amorphous alloy increases, the yield strength and the…

Detection of Human Fall Using Floor Vibration and Multi-Features Semi-Supervised SVM.

Human falls are the premier cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults. The health outcome of a fall event is largely dependent on rapid response and rescue of the fallen elder. Being able to provide an accurate and fast fall detection will dramatically improve the health outcomes of the older population and reduce the associated healthcare cost after a fall. To achieve the goal, a multi-features semi-supervised support vector machines (MFSS-SVM) algorithm utilizing measurements from structural floor vibration obtained through accelerometers is proposed in this study to detect fal…

Vibration enhances osteoclastogenesis by inducing RANKL expression via NF-κB signaling in osteocytes.

To shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment it is important not only to reduce risks such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and root resorption, but also to decrease pain and discomfort caused by a fixed appliance. Several studies have investigated the effect of vibration applied to fixed appliances to accelerate tooth movement. Although it was reported that vibration accelerates orthodontic tooth movement by enhancing alveolar bone resorption, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of vibration on osteoclastogenesi…

Pathway Analysis Hints Towards Beneficial Effects of Long-Term Vibration on Human Chondrocytes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Spaceflight negatively influences the function of cartilage tissue in vivo. In vitro human chondrocytes exhibit an altered gene expression of inflammation markers after a two-hour exposure to vibration. Little is known about the impact of long-term vibration on chondrocytes. METHODS: Human cartilage cells were exposed for up to 24 h (VIB) on a specialised vibration platform (Vibraplex) simulating the vibration profile which occurs during parabolic flights and compared to static control conditions (CON). Afterwards, they were investigated by phase-contrast microscopy, rhodamin…

Health effects associated with occupational exposure to hand-arm or whole body vibration.

Workers in a number of different occupational sectors are exposed to workplace vibration on a daily basis. This exposure may arise through the use of powered-hand tools or hand-transmitted vibration (HTV). Workers might also be exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) by driving delivery vehicles, earth moving equipment, or through use of tools that generate vibration at low dominant frequencies and high amplitudes, such as jackhammers. Occupational exposure to vibration has been associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal pain in the back, neck, hands, shoulders, and hips. Occupational …

Clinical Application of Vibration Controlled Transient Elastography in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B.

Evaluation of the extent and progression of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis is of critical importance in the management and prognosis of patients with chronic hepatitis B. Due to the limitation of liver biopsy, non-invasive methods, especially liver stiffness measurement (LSM) by vibration controlled transient elastography, have been developed and widely applied for liver fibrosis assessment. LSM aims to reduce, but not to substitute, the need for liver biopsy for fibrosis/cirrhosis diagnosis. While LSM may have potential utility in monitoring treatment response, its applications in prediction of…

The efficacy of airflow and seat vibration on reducing visually induced motion sickness.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a well-known sensation in virtual environments and simulators, typically characterized by a variety of symptoms such as pallor, sweating, dizziness, fatigue, and/or nausea. Numerous methods to reduce VIMS have been previously introduced; however, a reliable countermeasure is still missing. In the present study, the effect of airflow and seat vibration to alleviate VIMS was investigated. Eighty-two participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups (airflow, vibration, combined airflow and vibration, and control) and then exposed to a 15 min lon…
