Ultrasound findings and clinical antecedents of cerebral palsy in very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence and timing of neonatal ultrasound lesions, and clinical details about pregnancy and the perinatal period, in a total population of extremely premature children with cerebral palsy, born to mothers who were resident in Oxfordshire. METHODS: Eighteen children born at less than 32 completed weeks of gestation were identified from a regional cerebral palsy register. Eighteen controls were matched for gestation, time, and place of birth. Perinatal records and ultrasound reports were systematically reviewed. Sequential neonatal ultrasound images stored on vid

Neonatal general movements: an early predictor for neurodevelopmental outcome in infants with intrauterine growth retardation.

Intrauterine growth retardation plays a significant role in neurodevelopmental outcome. The assessment of general movements during the first 20 weeks is a new method for early detection of brain dysfunction. General movements in 31 infants with asymmetric intrauterine growth retardation and their appropriate for gestational age-matched controls were examined. General movements were scored as normal or abnormal by sequential videotape recordings in the writhing (term to 2 weeks), early fidgety (9-11 weeks), and late fidgety (14-16 weeks) periods. Scores were compared between the groups and corr…

Assessment of vestibular function by videonystagmoscopy.

Videonystagmoscopy has been used to subjectively observe the responses of the vestibular system in a population of patients with vestibular deficits. These results were compared with those of a control group of healthy, age-matched volunteers. The videonystagmoscopy device is made of one or two CCD cameras mounted on lightproof goggles, allowing a subjective observation of ocular movements on a video monitor. The eye movements, as well as the position of the head in space, can be recorded on videotape. The eyes are illuminated by infrared light emitting diodes placed on each side of the camera

Gastroschisis: can antenatal ultrasound predict infant outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: To test previously proposed but unproven antenatal ultrasound prognostic criteria in fetal gastroschisis. METHODS: Thirty consecutive gastroschisis-affected pregnancies and their outcomes were reviewed retrospectively. Data were tabulated by review of antenatal ultrasound videotapes, with blinded comparison to indicators of short- and long-term infant outcomes obtained from the medical records. Criteria of previous reports were applied to these data, focusing on their ability to prognosticate effectively. RESULTS: Applying a criterion of 10 mm bowel dilatation proved minimally use

Observed dyadic collaboration among couples coping with type 1 diabetes.

Previous research linking collaboration to relationship and health outcomes has relied almost exclusively on individual self-report and failed to take into consideration the dyadic nature of collaboration. We enrolled couples (n = 193) in which one person had Type 1 diabetes (52% female; 91% non-Hispanic white) into the study and asked them to discuss a diabetes-related issue of high concern for 8 min. These videotaped interactions were coded for dyadic collaboration. Mood was measured before and after the discussion. After the discussion, patients and partners reported support provided and re

Consideration of the relevance of ethological animal models for human repetitive behavioral spectrum disorders.

Treatment successes of various stereotyped behaviors in animals and humans has renewed interest in ethologic animal models for the study of psychiatric disorders. This report presents another such behavior occurring in horses to weaving. This anomalous, repetitive, and purposeless behavior draws analogies to human compulsive spectrum behaviors. A "weaver" provided an opportunity to evaluate serotonin, dopamine, and opioid neurotransmitter system contributions by probing each with a selective agent in A-B-A-C-A-D design. The horse was treated in sequential 1-month periods separated by 1-month w

Location of the vibratory segment in tracheoesophageal speakers.

The Singer-Blom tracheoesophageal puncture procedure for surgical-prosthetic voice restoration has proved to be a viable option for alaryngeal speech rehabilitation. Following tracheoesophageal puncture, occlusion of the tracheostoma shunts pulmonary air through the Blom-Singer prosthesis into the cervical esophagus. The pulmonary air passing through the cervical esophagus and into the hypopharynx causes a portion of the upper alimentary tract to vibrate in a manner similar to that of the pharyngoesophageal segment during the production of esophageal speech. To study the location and shape of

The effect of an online video intervention 'Movie Models' on specific parenting practices and parental self-efficacy related to children's physical activity, screen-time and healthy diet: a quasi experimental study.

BACKGROUND: In children, being sufficiently physically active, having low levels of screen-time and having a healthy diet are largely influenced by parenting practices. Children of parents applying positive parenting practices are at lower risk for overweight and obesity. Therefore, we investigated the effect of a health promoting online video intervention for parents ('Movie Models') on children's physical activity (PA), screen-time and healthy diet, and on specific parenting practices and parental self-efficacy related to these parenting practices. The online videos are delivered to parents

[Prosocial intervention in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability: benefits of videotaping therapy sessions].

INTRODUCTION: The category of pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) without intellectual disability (including Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism) has increased steadily among individuals since the 1980s. Although some symptoms may decrease with age, functional disability persists and is largely related to abnormalities in social interaction. Within the framework of PDD without intellectual disability, improving social skills appears to be a primary target for intervention programs. Despite a recent increase in the number of studies on this topic, few validated programs are yet av

Investigation of practices to support the complex communication needs of children with hearing impairment and cerebral palsy in a rural district of Kenya: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation services are scarce in low-income countries, where under-representation of some specialist professions has led to the role extension of others. An example of this can be found in Kilifi in Kenya where the role of speech and language therapy has been taken on by occupational therapists and teachers. AIMS: To investigate the communication practices used by these professional groups to support children with complex communication needs in a rural part of Kenya and to explore the ways in which this might be seen to facilitate or obstruct improved communication by asking

Development and validation of a video-animated tool for assessing mobility.

BACKGROUND: Existing self-report measures of mobility ignore important contextual features of movement and require respondents to make complex judgments about specific tasks. Thus, we describe the development and validation of a short form (sf) video-animated tool for assessing mobility, the Mobility Assessment Tool-MAT-sf. METHODS: This study involves cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses examining the measurement properties of the MAT-sf. The MAT-sf consists of 10 animated video clips that assess respondents' level of proficiency in performing each task. The main outcome measures used f
