Application of piggy-back lens in the correction of severe keratoconus: A case study.

OBJECTIVE: This is a case study on the application of a piggy-back lens in the correction of severe keratoconus. METHODS: From the results of general eye examination, refractive state examination, and corneal morphology examination on the patient, it was determined that corneal protrusion and deformation of the right eye were obvious. The right eye was corrected using a piggy-back lens and the left eye with a rigid gas-permeable contact lens (RGPCL) alone. RESULTS: The right-eye lens fit well and the lens coverage was good. Both the static and dynamic fit results for the left-eye lens were g

Agreement of wavefront-based refraction, dry and cycloplegic autorefraction with subjective refraction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the agreement of dry, and cycloplegic autorefraction and wavefront-based refraction with subjective refraction. METHOD: 83 subjects aged 19-57 years were included in this cross-sectional study. Refractive status was determined using four methods including subjective refraction, wavefront-based refraction, dry and cycloplegic autorefraction. Refractive data were recorded as sphere, cylinder and spherical equivalent (SE). Power vector components were used to compare the astigmatism obtained using the different methods of refraction. RESULTS: The more negative spherical, cy

Inter-Eye Association of Visual Field Defects in Glaucoma and Its Clinical Utility.

PURPOSE: To investigate intereye associations of visual field (VF) defects. METHODS: We selected 24-2 VF pairs of both eyes from 63,604 patients tested on the same date with mean deviation (MD) ≥ -12 dB. VFs were decomposed into one normal and 15 defect patterns previously identified using archetypal analysis. VF pattern weighting coefficients were correlated between the worse and better eyes, as defined by MD. VF defect patterns (weighting coefficients > 10%) in the better eye were predicted from weighting coefficients of the worse eye by logistic regression models, which were evaluated by a

Genetics of Equine Ocular Disease.

Horses perform in a variety of disciplines that are visually demanding, and any disease impacting the eye has the potential to threaten vision and thus the utility of the horse. Advances in equine genetics have enabled the understanding of some inherited ocular disorders and ocular manifestations and are enabling cross-species comparisons. Genetic testing for multiple congenital ocular anomalies, congenital stationary night blindness, equine recurrent uveitis, and squamous cell carcinoma can identify horses with or at risk for disease and thus can assist in clinical management and breeding dec

Pupillographic campimetry: an objective method to measure the visual field.

Pupillographic campimetry allows measuring the visual field objectively by analyzing the pupil response to perimetric stimuli. One of the drawbacks of this technique, similar to static perimetry, is the need of reliable fixation of the subject. By using stimulus sizes comparable to static perimetry and applying gaze tracking, we enable a retinotopic visual field examination regardless of fixation problems and with an increased stability and improved spatial resolution. Here, we present the results of applying the method in eight normal sighted subjects as well as in three patients suffering fr

[Perimetry in Neuro-ophthalmological Function Diagnostics: Indication - Methods - Topodiagnostic Aspects].

The assessment of visual field findings is fundamental in neuro-ophthalmological functional diagnostics: By means of perimetry, functional and topodiagnostic considerations in case of unexplained visual loss or suspected lesions of the visual pathway are possible in a non-invasive manner. Repeated examinations allow for functional follow-up of a disease and judgement on the efficacy of a therapeutic procedure. This paper is intended to convey the basics of visual field examination and diagnostics. The focus is on the value of perimetry in neuro-ophthalmological functional diagnostics. Both kin

Accommodation stimulus and response determinations with autorefractors.

PURPOSE: To develop equations for accommodation stimulus and accommodation response with autorefractors when the accommodation stimulus is produced by combinations of object distances and lenses placed in front of eyes, and to give worked examples using these equations. METHODS: Simple ray tracing was used to determine stimulus and response equations, taking into account the reference positions for targets, for refraction, and for autorefractor readings. RESULTS: Several examples applying equations are provided. Features of these examples include evaluating approximate calculations that have

[Dissociated horizontal deviations (DHD): nomenclature and etiology. An orientating attempt in terminological confusion].

PURPOSE: To classify dissociated horizontal deviations (DHD) based on the etiology of the vergence that causes the dissociation of the squint angle. METHODS: Dissociated strabismus can reliably be diagnosed by a change of the squint angle caused by an alternation in the fixation from one eye to the other, when all the other conditions (head posture, direction of gaze, fixation distance, accommodation) remain unchanged. The decisive diagnostic tool is the reversed fixation test: During monocular fixation with one eye, the squint angle of the other eye is neutralized using a synoptometer or a p

Visual acuity development: a study of preterm and full-term infants.

Visual acuity was measured in both preterm and full-term infants by means of forced-choice preferential looking. The ages of infants tested ranged from one month to 12 months. The results of both groups were considered and compared in terms of natal and conceptional age. The data suggested that preterm infants show visual responses equivalent to their full-term counterparts by nine months of age. Trends indicate that visual acuity development in healthy preterm infants appears to be accelerated when compared with full-term infants of the same post-conceptional age.

The effectiveness of multifocal correction upon presbyopic near and intermediate visual resolution performance.

The effectiveness of multifocal correction upon presbyopic near and intermediate visual resolution performance was measured using Landolt ring targets. Decimal resolution acuity was determined at eight viewing distances from 36.4 cm to 1 m for non-presbyopic controls, presbyopic subjects corrected for infinity, and for presbyopic subjects corrected by bifocals, trifocals and Varilux 2 multifocal lenses. Non-presbyopic subjects demonstrated a resolution ability of 1.9 decimal acuity or better at all viewing distances. Presbyopic subjects corrected for distance but without multifocal addition sh

Visual agnosia without alexia.

A 41-year-old man presented with bilateral posterior cerebral artery infarcts. He had visual object agnosia and prosopagnosia with preservation of reading abilities. There was also defective visual memory, topographic orientation, and color perception, as well as simultanagnosia. From the clinical facts and CT findings, it was postulated that bilateral visual-limbic disconnection accounted for the patient's visual agnosia and related disturbances.
