Polyphenols-Ensured Accessibility from Food to the Human Metabolism by Chemical and Biotechnological Treatments.

Polyphenols are plant-based compounds famous for their positive impact on both human health and the quality of food products. The benefits of polyphenols are related to reducing cardiovascular diseases, cholesterol management, cancers, and neurological disorders in humans and increasing the shelf life, management of oxidation, and anti-microbial activity in food products. The bioavailability and bio-accessibility of polyphenols are of the highest importance to secure their impact on human and food health. This paper summarizes the current state-of-the-art approaches on how polyphenols can be m

Cutting Waste in Bronchoscopy: A Multicenter Observational Study in the German Health Care System.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary endoscopy contributes substantially to medical waste generation. Previous studies have estimated the average waste per bronchoscopy at approximately 1.03 kg. Scalable data are lacking, however. RESEARCH QUESTION: How much waste is generated by pulmonary procedures with reusable endoscopes (bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound [EBUS]) at 2 German tertiary care centers, what is the estimated national impact, and which strategies can be identified for waste reduction? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In a prospective, multicenter observational study conducted over 4 weeks pe

Phosphorus recovery and recycling - closing the loop.

There is a clear and pressing need to better manage our planet's resources. Phosphorus is a crucial element for life, but the natural phosphorus cycle has been perturbed to such an extent that humanity faces two dovetailing problems: the dwindling supply of phosphate rock as a resource, and the overabundance of phosphate in water systems leading to eutrophication. This Tutorial Review will explore the current routes to industrial phosphorus compounds, and innovative academic routes towards accessing these same products in a more sustainable manner. It will then describe the many ways that usef

Metagenomics and untargeted metabolomics reveal antibiotic resistance dynamics in an anaerobic digestion-composting system treating organic fraction of municipal solid waste.

BACKGROUND: The growing population and associated increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) have promoted the use of sustainable waste management strategies. Given its high organic content, MSW can be treated through anaerobic digestion (AD) and aerobic composting (AC) to recover value-added products such as bioenergy and soil amendments. However, MSW is also recognized as a relevant source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), raising concerns about environmental and public health impacts. This study aimed to elucidate the dynamics of ARGs and antibiotic compounds during the treatment of the o

Coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals to solve problems of air pollution by coal thermal power stations and boiler plants: An introductory review.

This introductory study presents the analysis of the environmental, economic and energy performance indicators of burning high-potential coal water slurries containing petrochemicals (CWSP) instead of coal, fuel oil, and natural gas at typical thermal power stations (TPS) and a boiler plant. We focus on the most hazardous anthropogenic emissions of coal power industry: sulfur and nitrogen oxides. The research findings show that these emissions may be several times lower if coal and oil processing wastes are mixed with water as compared to the combustion of traditional pulverized coal, even of

Endothelial Notch1 signaling in white adipose tissue promotes cancer cachexia.

Cachexia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals with cancer and is characterized by weight loss due to adipose and muscle tissue wasting. Hallmarks of white adipose tissue (WAT) remodeling, which often precedes weight loss, are impaired lipid storage, inflammation and eventually fibrosis. Tissue wasting occurs in response to tumor-secreted factors. Considering that the continuous endothelium in WAT is the first line of contact with circulating factors, we postulated whether the endothelium itself may orchestrate tissue remodeling. Here, we show using human and mouse cancer

Impact of intervention on healthcare waste management practices in a tertiary care governmental hospital of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare waste is produced from various therapeutic procedures performed in hospitals, such as chemotherapy, dialysis, surgery, delivery, resection of gangrenous organs, autopsy, biopsy, injections, etc. These result in the production of non-hazardous waste (75-95%) and hazardous waste (10-25%), such as sharps, infectious, chemical, pharmaceutical, radioactive waste, and pressurized containers (e.g., inhaler cans). Improper healthcare waste management may lead to the transmission of hepatitis B, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. METHODS: This evaluation of waste

Diverse Sulfuriferula spp. from sulfide mineral weathering environments oxidize ferrous iron and reduced inorganic sulfur compounds.

UNLABELLED: Microorganisms are important catalysts for the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds. One environmentally important source of reduced sulfur is metal sulfide minerals that occur in economic mineral deposits and mine waste. Previous research found that Sulfuriferula spp. were abundant and active in long-term weathering experiments with simulated waste rock and tailings from the Duluth Complex, Northern Minnesota. We, therefore, isolated several strains of Sulfuriferula spp. from these long-term experiments and characterized their metabolic and genomic properties to provide

Machine learning for predicting and optimizing the performance of a commercial-scale anaerobic digester with diverse feedstocks and operating conditions.

The improper disposal of food waste and livestock manure poses significant environmental risks, including nutrient pollution, water contamination, and greenhouse gas emissions. Anaerobic digestion (AD) provides a sustainable pathway for converting organic waste into biogas while reducing environmental impacts. However, optimizing AD performance at a commercial scale remains challenging due to feedstock variability, operational complexity, and time-dependent dynamics. In this study, we analyzed six years of data from a commercial-scale AD system processing 18 types of food and manure waste to d

Dehalogenation reactions between halide salts and phosphate compounds.

Reactions between phosphoric acid [H3PO4] or ammonium hydrogen phosphates [i.e., NH4H2PO4, (NH4)2HPO4] and halide salts can be used to dehalogenate (remove halides from) salt-based waste streams, where the process of removing halides yields products that have more efficient disposal pathways for repository storage. In this context, the term efficiency is defined as higher waste loadings and simplified immobilization processes with potential for recycle of certain salt components (e.g., 37Cl as H37Cl or NH4 37Cl). The main streams identified for these processes are nuclear wastes generated duri

Pancreatic cancer cell-derived IGFBP-3 contributes to muscle wasting.

BACKGROUND: Progressive loss of skeletal muscle, termed muscle wasting, is a hallmark of cancer cachexia and contributes to weakness, reduced quality of life, as well as poor response to therapy. Previous studies have indicated that systemic host inflammatory response regarding tumor development results in muscle wasting. However, how tumor directly regulates muscle wasting via tumor-derived secreted proteins is still largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, we performed bioinformatics analysis in two datasets of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, which causes cancer cachexia and muscle wastin

Effect of different degradation types on properties of plastic waste obtained from espresso coffee capsules.

In terms of large use of plastic products, a necessity exists to minimize effects of the waste produced on environment by recycling, reuse and application in new products. In Brazil, the espresso coffee capsules are an emerging plastic waste, representing 0.9% of the coffee consumed in 2017. Therefore, Nescafé Dolce Gusto espresso coffee capsules were chosen in order to understand the polypropylene stabilization and degradation initiators with the purpose of recycling by applying in a composite material, as home composting product. In this context, the plastic capsule wastes were exposed to ch

Small-scale theranostic radiopharmaceutical production using cold kits: a green chemistry perspective.

The global rise of theranostic nuclear medicine continues to increase the environmental and economic pressure associated with radiopharmaceutical production. Large-scale manufacturing, reliant on cyclotrons, GMP-compliant cleanrooms, automated synthesis modules, and disposable plastics, represent the most energy-intensive and waste-generating approach. In contrast, cold kit technologies represent an underutilized strategy to improve sustainability, reduce environmental impact and expand equitable global access to theranostic radiopharmaceuticals. This review evaluates small-scale hospital-base

Socio-economic sustainability with circular economy - An alternative approach.

As the global population and living standards rise, it pushes the demand for basic amenities like food, health, and energy resources. Additionally, manufacturing automation has led to mass production and consumption, triggering waste production. The existing linear economy approach has led to increasing waste production and resource depletion, posing significant environmental and public health threats. To overcome these impediments, an alternative model called the circular economy concept has gained popularity in the global industry community. This closed-loop, restorative, waste-free concept

Inhibition of microbial metabolism in anaerobic lagoons by selected sulfonamides, tetracyclines, lincomycin, and tylosin tartrate.

Antibiotics are used to maintain healthy livestock and to promote weight gain in concentrated animal feed operations. Antibiotics rarely are metabolized completely by livestock and, thus, are often present in livestock waste and in waste-treatment lagoons. The introduction of antibiotics into anaerobic lagoons commonly used for swine waste treatment has the potential for negative impacts on lagoon performance, which relies on a consortium of microbes ranging from fermentative microorganisms to methanogens. To address this concern, the effects of eight common veterinary antibiotics on anaerobic
