The Influence of Grammatical Gender on Object Conceptualization Is Weak and Language-Dependent.

Do we make gendered associations with objects whose linguistic labels have masculine/feminine grammatical gender? This question derives from the neo-Whorfian view that language shapes our conceptualizations of the world. Previous research has provided mixed answers. Here, we present three experiments where we tested for the gender effect on object conceptualization using a word association approach: a first group of participants generated adjectives for nouns referring to objects, and a second group subsequently rated those adjectives for masculinity/femininity. In Experiment 1, with native Fr

Associations Between Audiovisual Integration and Reading Comprehension in Autistic and Non-autistic School-Aged Children.

Although not considered a core feature of autism, autistic children often present with difficulties in reading comprehension, which is a multisensory process involving translation of print to speech sounds (i.e., decoding) and interpreting words in context (i.e., language comprehension). This study tested the hypothesis that audiovisual integration may explain individual differences in reading comprehension, through its relations with decoding and language comprehension, in autistic and non-autistic children. To test our hypothesis, we conducted a concurrent correlational study involving 50 au

Autobiographical memory and parasuicide in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have found that parasuicidal patients are poor at recalling specific autobiographical memories when tested with the word-cueing paradigm and two studies have reported some evidence that over-general recall is a risk factor for repetition of parasuicide. The aim of the present study was to test whether this association could be replicated with a sample of patients suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHOD: Twenty-three patients with BPD completed a version of the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) and self-report measures of depression, anxiety an

Baby-wipe dermatitis: preservative-induced hand eczema in parents and persons using moist towelettes.

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema can have complex causative or aggravating influences, and the pattern, history, and patch test data are helpful in identifying sources and antigen substitution. OBJECTIVE: We studied our patients with hand eczema associated with exposure to baby wipes for pattern and sensitivities. METHODS: Patient records over a 10-year period containing key words were reviewed for relevance of exposure, patch test data, and outcome. RESULTS: A total of 6 women and 3 men with hand eczema were found to be allergic to (preservatives found in) different brands of moist towelettes used

Marital disturbance and child problems: a cautionary note regarding hyperactive children.

In previous work, investigators have found a relationship between marital discord and childhood conduct problems (aggression) in clinic samples. Given the wide variability of aggression found among hyperactive children, it would follow from previous work that child aggression may be associated with marital discord in a hyperactive population. This hypothesis was tested in a sample of 23 boys (ages 5 to 8) diagnosed as attention deficit with hyperactivity. Aggressive behaviors were tracked by the children's teachers for 12 school days. Parental and teacher ratings of conduct problems were also

Use of Meckel's diverticulum as a temporary diverting ostomy.

Meckel's diverticulum is among the most common congenital defects of the gastrointestinal tract, and is associated with a total lifetime risk of complications around 4%. While debate on prophylactic resection of incidental Meckel's diverticulum continues, there have been reports of its successful use for urinary diversion and reconstruction. In contrast, its use as a means of fecal diversion has been described anecdotally. Herein, we describe our technique of temporary fecal diversion using Meckel's diverticulum as reliable conduit for stoma formation in a toddler. The stoma functioned well un

The road to tranquility: the search for selective anti-anxiety agents.

The earliest treatments of anxiety included cathartics and emetics, which were used to remove the excess of black bile (hence our word melancholia) thought to be responsible for the patient's demeanor. By the 1700s, physicians were prescribing drugs that are more selective for the CNS, chiefly opium and strengthening tonics. In the 1860s, cardioactive drugs such as atropine, aconite, and digitalis were assumed to counteract anxiety because it could be associated with tachycardia and/or melancholia. A little later, the emergence of laboratory animal models, culminating in the conditioned avoida

Perceptual and associative knowledge in category specific impairment of semantic memory: a study of two cases.

We report two head-injured patients whose knowledge of living things was selectively disrupted. Their semantic knowledge was tested with naming and verbal comprehension tasks and a verbal questionnaire. In all of them there was consistent evidence that knowledge of living things was impaired and that of non-living things was relatively preserved. The living things deficit emerged irrespective of whether the question tapped associative or perceptual knowledge or required visual or non visual information. In all tasks the category effect was still significant after the influence on the performan

Role of zinc in regulating the testicular function. Part 2. Effect of dietary zinc deficiency on gonadotropins, prolactin and testosterone levels as well as 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in testes of male albino rats.

Induced zinc deficiency in male albino rats caused a great reduction in the testicular levels of testosterone as compared to control and zinc-supplemented (ZS) rats. Estimation of the testicular levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and prolactin (PRL) in the zinc-deficient (ZD) rats showed higher levels in comparison with both control and zinc-supplemented rats. However, the increase in PRL levels was statistically insignificant. A great reduction in the activity of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, an important enzyme involved in testosterone biosynthesis, was demons

Comparison of memory skills in learning disabled, low-reading, and nondisabled adolescents.

Concerns are raised regarding the samples used in studies of learning disabled children. In this study, subjects were 56 high school students; 10 exhibited perceptual or processing difficulties ("learning disabled"), 15 performed poorly on reading achievement tests ("low readers"), and 31 showed no scholastic problems ("nondisabled"). Scores of the three groups were compared on nine memory tasks involving either auditory or visual input and encompassing a wide variety of content (digits, pictures, related and unrelated words, paired-associates, or sentences). The nondisabled group performed si

Phonological overlap alone does not mediate generalization in action-effect learning: Evidence from homophones.

Intentional action is guided by learned relations between actions and their effects, but it remains unclear which features of an effect support generalization of such learning. We tested whether phonological information can retrieve learned action-effect relations and bias voluntary action selection. Japanese homophones provide a stringent test because words can share pronunciation while differing in meaning and visual or orthographic form. In four preregistered experiments, Japanese participants learned arbitrary pairings between left/right keypresses and pictures or Kanji characters. They th

Quantitative in vitro assessment of phototoxicity using a human skin model, Skin2.

The ability to accurately predict the phototoxic potential of personal and skin care products remains a key element in assessing the safety of premarketed products. To find a reliable in vitro alternative test for photoirritancy, the European Commission and the European Cosmetic Association are conducting a 3-year, European validation study. Based on the results of this study, an in vitro photoirritancy method will be selected for incorporation into new international guidelines for photoirritancy testing. As a part of this study, Skin2, a cultured human skin system, was used to evaluate the ph

Accuracy of reported family history of diabetes mellitus. Results from San Luis Valley Diabetes Study.

There are two possible sources of bias in the assessment of family history of diabetes: 1) a person with diabetes may be more likely to report a diabetic relative than a nondiabetic person would be, and 2) relatives of individuals with diabetes may be more likely to be tested for diabetes than relatives of nondiabetic individuals. We conducted a study on a subsample of families of subjects in the San Luis Valley Diabetes Study to examine these issues. A sample of 5 White and 5 Hispanic subjects (probands) with diabetic glucose tolerance tests and the same number with normal glucose tolerance w

Venous thrombosis: the clinical problem.

Although the exact cause of DVT is not known, venous thrombosis and its sequelae remain important clinical problems. Pulmonary embolism is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the hospitalized population, and the postthrombotic syndrome affects a large portion of the general population. While specific screening tests are not readily available to detect those patients who are likely to develop DVT, certain clinical risk factors have been identified that predispose to thrombosis. These groups include patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical procedures, patients with cardiac di

Marginal bone level in the normal primary dentition.

The aim of the present study was to establish the normal range for the radiographic distance between the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and the marginal bone level (MBL) in the primary dentition, and to relate this distance to various physiological and pathological factors. 128 children at the ages 7, 8 and 9 years took part in the study. Clinical and radiographic examinations of the mesial and distal surfaces of all primary molars and the distal surface of the primary canines were performed. The clinical examination included measurements of the amounts of plaque, bleeding on probing, probing d

Linkage disequilibrium mapping provides further evidence of a gene for reading disability on chromosome 6p21.3-22.

Linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping was used to follow up reports of linkage between reading disability (RD) and an 18 cM region of chromosome 6p21.3-22. Using a two-stage approach, we tested for association between RD and 22 microsatellite markers in two independent samples of 101 (Stage 1) and 77 (Stage 2) parent/proband trios in which RD was rigorously defined. The most significant replicated associations were observed between combinations of markers D6S109/422/1665 (Stage 1, P=0.002 (adjusted for multiple testing); Stage 2, P=0.0001) and D6S506/1029/1660 (Stage 1, P=0.02 (adjusted), Stage

The CareVirtue Digital Journal for Family and Friend Caregivers of People Living With Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias: Exploratory Topic Modeling and User Engagement Study.

BACKGROUND: As Alzheimer disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) progress, individuals increasingly require assistance from unpaid, informal caregivers to support them in activities of daily living. These caregivers may experience high levels of financial, mental, and physical strain associated with providing care. CareVirtue is a web-based tool created to connect and support multiple individuals across a care network to coordinate care activities and share important information, thereby reducing care burden. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to use a computational informatics approach to thema

Blood Inflammation Indexes Mediate the Association Between Weight-Adjusted-Waist Index and Cognitive Function Among Older Adults in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored the relationship between the weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) and cognitive function among older individuals in the United States (US) and assessed whether blood inflammation indexes potentially mediate the association between WWI and cognitive function. METHODS: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2011 to 2014 were collected. The WWI (waist circumference divided by the square root of bodyweight) was calculated, and cognitive performance was assessed using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning (

Auditory naming is impaired in posterior cortical atrophy and early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Visual naming ability reflects semantic memory retrieval and is a hallmark deficit of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Naming impairment is most prominently observed in the late-onset amnestic and logopenic variant Primary Progressive Aphasia (lvPPA) syndromes. However, little is known about how other patients across the atypical AD syndromic spectrum perform on tests of auditory naming, particularly those with primary visuospatial deficits (Posterior Cortical Atrophy; PCA) and early onset (EOAD) syndromes. Auditory naming tests may be of particular relevance to more accurately measurin
