Investigating the longer-term health consequences of work-related injuries among youth.

PURPOSE: To investigate the longer-term health consequences of work injuries among youth aged 15-24 years using a population-based, longitudinal study (1991-2001) of merged health care and workers' compensation records. METHODS: A group-based modeling approach was used (1) to identify unique trajectories of health care use defined by general practitioner visits among the study sample stratified by gender, and (2) to determine the injury factors that predict a youth's membership in a trajectory, adjusted for sociodemographic factors. RESULTS: Four long-term trajectories of health care use wer…

Rates of carpal tunnel syndrome, epicondylitis, and rotator cuff claims in Ontario workers during 1997.

The primary objective of this research was the calculation of crude and specific rates of first-allowed, lost-time carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), epicondylitis, and rotator cuff syndrome/tear (RCS/RCT) claims in Ontario workers during 1997. A secondary objective was to determine if results related to these diagnoses were consistent with findings for all cumulative trauma disorders affecting the specific part of upper extremity region. Rates were calculated by combining claim counts and population "at-risk" estimates derived from the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board databases and Can

Litigants' epicondylitis.

The speculated pathological causes of tennis elbow and the part work might play in its causation are briefly reviewed. The excellent surgical results, whatever operative technique was employed in those surgical series reported prior to the wave of work-related upper limb disorders is noted. One hundred and eight consecutive patients with tennis elbow who were also litigants (seeking compensation) were reviewed and the result of treatment and specifically surgery, analysed. Disappointing results of surgery were found in litigants and recommendations are made as to the management of litigants ep

Predicting injurious events.

This paper has attempted to quantify the size and the nature of the industrial personal damage problem, in terms of not only classifying that damage but also showing the predominant damaging energy types. We have shown the majority of the cost of work-related personal damage (in Australia) is from non-fatal permanent disability. It is not possible to make this statement as clearly for the United States. We can find no clear identification of the permanently disabled group for U.S. industry within the national dataset. This could indicate it is being camouflaged, as it was in Australia until de

Compensation status as a predictor of outcome in nonsurgically treated low back injury.

Whether the compensation status of patients injured in occupational accidents influences treatment outcome remains a controversial issue. This article describes the treatment outcome status of compensated versus noncompensated patients who received comprehensive functional restoration treatment of low back pain in a hospital-based, interdisciplinary, occupational rehabilitation and pain management program. Results of this investigation revealed treatment outcome differences between the two groups in two of three measures at discharge (subjective pain intensity and return-to-work), and outcome

Chronic upper limb pain syndrome (repetitive strain injury) in the Australian workforce: a systematic cross sectional rheumatological study of 229 patients.

The epidemic of chronic upper limb pain is the most important and controversial issue in industrial rheumatology in Australia today. Two hun … . Stress, personal susceptibility and poor motivation appeared important in some cases. The liberal workers' compensation system, early labeling as repetitive strain injury, and social acceptability appeared important in the development of the epidemic.

"I will not step back": A Qualitative Study of Lay Mental Health Workers' Experiences in India.

A significant treatment gap exists for mental illnesses across the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Task-sharing, a potentially scalable strategy to bridge the treatment gap, has been shown to be feasible and effective for the treatment of a range of mental illnesses. However, there is a lack of research examining lay mental health workers' experiences in such task-sharing roles. The aim of our study was to understand the barriers and facilitators that lay health workers (LHWs) face in delivering mental healthcare. We conducted in-depth interviews with 32 lay me

Act No. 8/1988 on infractions and sanctions in the social order, 7 April 1988.

This Act sets forth infractions and sanctions with respect to labor and social security. Among other things, it classifies the following as very serious offenses: 1) unilateral decisions of employers involving discrimination, either favorable or adverse, in the matter of compensation, hours, training, promotion, and other labor conditions with respect to sex and kinship with other workers; and 2) establishment of conditions through advertising, offers of work, or any other means that constitute discrimination, either favorable or adverse, with respect to access to employment for reasons of sex

Mental health status of Ontario injured workers with permanent impairments.

OBJECTIVE: Each year, approximately 31,000 Canadian injured worker claimants are certified to have permanent impairments associated with the initial workplace incident. Permanent impairments are characterized by ongoing pain, and limitations in physical function and activity participation--all predisposing factors to mental health problems. Here we examine the post-accident mental health status of a sample of Ontario injured workers with permanent impairments. METHODS: We analyze data from a cross-sectional telephone survey of 494 injured workers. Mental health status is examined using nine d

[Occupation and carpal tunnel syndrome].

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), compression of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel of the wrist, is the most common of all entrapment syndromes. Diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism and pregnancy are known to cause CTS. And certain occupations were been reported the risk factor of CTS. We report two patients with occupationally induced CTS, and discuss the relation between the development of CTS and occupation with reference to previous papers. Occupations that appear to promote CTS were classified in to three groups: jobs entailing the use of vibratory tools, assembly work and food

Reframing welders' parkinsonism: from the "idiopathic" label to biological causation and legal recognition.

In Korea, welders diagnosed with "idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD)" often face denial of workers' compensation, as "idiopathic" is interpreted as excluding occupational contribution. This narrative review examines whether a categorical distinction between iPD and "toxic parkinsonism" is defensible on diagnostic, pathological, neuroimaging, epidemiological, causal-inference, and legal grounds. The 2024 NSD-ISS (Neuronal α-synuclein disease Integrated Staging System) and SynNeurGe (Synuclein-Neurodegeneration-Gene) frameworks challenge categorical use of the "idiopathic" label by defining Pa…

Design of Anti-Eccentric Load Sensor for Engineering Operation Early Warning Based on Particle Swarm Optimization.

The accuracy of aerial work platform weighing is essential for safety. However, in practice, the same weight placed at different locations on the platform can yield varying readings, which is a phenomenon known as eccentric load. Measurement errors caused by eccentric loads can lead to missed detections and false alarms in the vehicle safety system, seriously affecting the safety of aerial work. To overcome the influence of eccentric load, the current engineering practice relies on multiple measurements at multiple points and averaging the results to eliminate the eccentric load, which greatly

Acceptability of circumcision as a means of HIV prevention among men who have sex with men in China.

Conclusive evidence-based research has shown that circumcision reduces the risk of HIV transmission via heterosexual intercourse, whilst ongoing studies are investigating similar effects via homosexual transmissions and the results are equivocal. Few acceptability studies regarding circumcision were conducted among men who have sex with men (MSM). In this cross-sectional study, a total of 307 MSM were recruited by snowball sampling and were interviewed anonymously by some peer field workers in Yangzhou, China. Amongst all uncircumcised participants (93.4% of all participants were uncircumcised

Noise-Related Hearing Disorder Among Vector Control Workers in Kuala Lumpur.

Introduction Noise-related hearing disorder (NRHD) is the second most common sensorineural hearing loss, right after age-related hearing loss (presbycusis). It is the highest reported occupational disease and a major compensable occupational hazard in Malaysia. With the increase in dengue cases, the need for vector control workers to control the spread of dengue at the expense of being exposed to noisy fogging machines is critical. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of vector control workers conducted by a local authority in Kuala Lumpur. Participants were categorised as either vector co

Editorial Commentary: Stiff Patients After Rotator Cuff Repair: How Many Had Underrecognized Preoperative Adhesive Capsulitis?

Stiffness after rotator cuff repair is one of the most common sources of disability and one of the most common complications. Smoking, diabetes, Workers' compensation status, and traumatic tears are among the strongest risk factors. This is important information in setting appropriate expectations for both the patient and the surgeon preoperatively. Some of these factors are also associated with preoperative stiffness, so surgeons should maintain a high index of suspicion for concomitant adhesive capsulitis in patients presenting with limited motion, particularly in diabetic and non-English sp…

Returning to work after a unilateral hand fracture.

We complied a case series involving 556 employed patients who sustained unilateral hand fractures requiring open reduction and internal fixation and a modification of their normal work activities and schedules. Time from injury to limited duty averaged 5 days, with 62% of the patients returning to work 1 day after surgery. Time from injury to resuming regular duty averaged 56 days. Both sexes averaged a return to work on limited duty after 5 days, but women returned to regular duty an average 5 days later than men. Patients with workers' compensation injuries, joint fractures, multiple fractur…

Silicosis in Teflon Coating Workers: An Emerging Occupational Hazard-A Case Series.

Silicosis is a well-recognized occupational lung disease commonly associated with high-risk industries, such as mining and quarrying. However, cases continue to emerge from nontraditional sectors. We report a case series of two patients employed in the Teflon coating industry who developed silicosis while working in this industry. Case 1 presented with exertional breathlessness and recurrent hemoptysis for one yr with crackles and clubbing. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) thorax showed right upper lobe aspergilloma. Case 2 presented with a dry cough and hemoptysis for six months wit
