[A case of refractory anemia with excess of blasts (RAEB) having weakened expression of B blood group antigen].

A 52 year-old male was admitted to our hospital with the complaint of the hypochondrial pain after meal in February 1989. He was diagnosed to be RAEB and to have common bile duct stone. His red blood cells (RBC) could not be agglutinated with anti-A, anti-B, or anti-A, B. The agglutinability of the cells to Ulex europaeus (anti-H) was the same to the normal type B RBC, and his serum contained anti-I, anti-E, and anti-c. In his saliva, both B and H antigens were detected. The glycosyl B transferase in his serum showed similar activity to that of normal individual with type B RBC. When his RBC w

Changes of blood group antigens in premalignant and malignant lesions of the human exocervix.

In this preliminary study the distribution of blood group A- and H-antigens and their structural precursor N-acetyllactosamine in normal, pre-malignant and malignant squamous epithelium were investigated using the immunofluorescence technique. In normal cervical epithelium the basal cells and few parabasal cells expressed N-acetyllactosamine. The parabasal and lower spinous cells expressed the H-antigen and the upper spinous layer expressed the A-antigen. All pre-malignant and malignant lesions showed irregular decrease in contents of A- and H-antigens. N-acetyllactosamine was either completel

Reasons why kidneys removed for transplantation are not transplanted in the United States.

The Organ Center establishes by the South-Eastern Organ Procurement Foundation collected information on 575 kidneys procured but not transplanted in the United States. The greatest proportion, 393, were not transplanted because a crossmatch-negative recipient was not found. Of these kidneys, 260 were transported to at least one additional center and 115 were offered to an additional center within 24 hr of removal. In 18 instances, attempts to share kidneys were made too late. The blood group representation of these kidneys was 62% A, 15% B, 12% AB, 11% O. The SEOPF system of crossmatches enabl

Specific red cell adherence test in benign and malignant lesions of the prostate.

The specific red cell adherence test (SRCA) for blood group antigens has been shown to have some bearing on the invasive potential of bladder tumours. Hitherto there have been few data published from patients with prostatic disease. The results of SRCA testing in 69 such patients are presented. Each of the 30 cases of adenocarcinoma was antigen negative. However, as 18 of 39 patients with only benign hyperplasia were also antigen negative, the test clearly does not reflect extant tumour and is probably not an indicator of subsequent growth of prostatic cancer. Antigen expression was also negat

ABO blood groups in malaria and schistosomiasis haematobium.

We sought to determine if there was any relationship between ABO blood groups and susceptibility to malaria and urinary schistosomiasis. In Epe and outlying villages in south-western Nigeria, we examined 681 people for their blood groups, malaria parasitemia and for the presence of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in their urine specimens. Two hundred and sixty-nine individuals were parasitemic for falciparum malaria, 97 subjects had urinary schistosomiasis and 56 people carried concurrent infections of both parasites. Frequencies of the blood groups were 56.68% for group 0, 22.32% for group B, 18

Assessing the risks of haemolysis as an adverse reaction following the transfusion of ABO incompatible plasma-containing components - A scoping review.

Background The limited supply of universal plasma has resulted in transfusion of ABO incompatible plasma to patients. As the need to implement whole blood transfusion in pre-hospitals setting rises, the lowest cut-off for anti-A/anti-B that does not cause haemolysis remains unknown. In this first scoping review, we aimed to determine the lowest ABO titre and volume reported in the literature to cause haemolysis from ABO incompatible plasma transfusions (plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate, and whole blood). Methods We searched several databases from inception to April 2022, including all study

Alterations of platelet function and clot formation kinetics after in vitro exposure to anti-A and -B.

BACKGROUND: ABO-mismatched platelets (PLTs) are commonly transfused despite reported complications. We hypothesized that because PLTs possess A and B antigens on their surface, ABO-mismatched transfused or recipient PLTs could become activated and/or dysfunctional after exposure to anti-A or -B in the transfused or recipient plasma. We present here in vitro modeling data on the functional effects of exposure of PLTs to ABO antibodies. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: PLT functions of normal PLTs of all ABO types were assessed before and after incubation with normal saline, ABO-identical plasma sampl

[Composition of intervillous thrombi from maternal and fetal blood].

In serological studies blood groups of intervillous thrombi of the placenta were identical with maternal blood groups in 88.9%. Identity with fetal blood groups occurred in 11.1%. Utilizing an elution technique in smears prepared from intervillous thrombi, 11.68% of the erythrocytes were of fetal, 88.32% of maternal origin. In conclusion, intervillous thrombi are mainly composed of maternal cells. The existence of small amounts of fetal cells simultaneously, points to the possible etiology: Local damage of the trophoblastic epithelium of the villi is followed by escape of fetal cells into the

A novel FUT1 variant, c.[35C>T;133_136dupCGCC], underlies a group A para-Bombay phenotype in a Chinese blood donor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The para-Bombay phenotype is characterized by H antigen deficiency and the natural production of antibody against the I and H antigens (anti-IH), some of which are occasionally clinically significant. It genetically results from the presence of two non-functional FUT1 alleles coupled with at least one functional FUT2 allele. We present the serological and molecular characterization of a para-Bombay phenotype case, which led to the identification of a novel FUT1 allele. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample from a blood donor was identified as a result of a discrepancy bet

[Frequency of subgroups of the antigen “a” among volunteer donors].

INTRODUCTION: The presence of weak variants of blood type A represents a challenge in the practice of immunohematology for discrepancies in the time of the classification. It is common in blood banks to perform a forward and reverse typing for the purpose of confirming the blood type, but not all the people with a subgroup A2 have developed anti-A1 antibodies. OBJECTIVE: We present a descriptive, observational and transversal study that establishes the proportion of subgroups of A antigen with the analysis of manual tube technique and monoclonal antibodies like anti-A, anti-A1 (Dolichus biflo

How do I implement a whole blood program for massively bleeding patients?

Building on the successful military experience, interest has been rekindled in transfusing whole blood (WB) early in the resuscitation of traumatically injured civilians, often before their ABO group is known. WB efficiently provides treatment for shock and coagulopathy, as well as platelet hemostatic function, to patients losing large volumes of blood. Unlike group O uncrossmatched red blood cells (RBCs), group O WB contains a substantial amount of plasma, which is incompatible with the RBCs of all non-group O recipients. Thus, when implementing a WB program, it is important to decide how to

ABO Blood Group as a Model for Platelet Glycan Modification in Arterial Thrombosis.

ABO blood groups have long been associated with cardiovascular disease, thrombosis, and acute coronary syndromes. Many studies over the years have shown type O blood group to be associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease than non-type O blood groups. However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Although ABO blood group is associated with variations in concentrations of circulating von Willebrand Factor and other endothelial cell adhesion molecules, ABO antigens are also present on several platelet surface glycoproteins and glycosphingolipids. As we highlight in

Use of maternal plasma for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis of fetal ABO genotypes.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of free fetal DNA in maternal plasma opened a door for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. Prenatal diagnosis of fetal ABO genotypes can provide a basis for the prevention and therapy of maternal-fetal incompatibility. We identified fetal ABO genotypes using fetal DNA in plasma from pregnant women with blood group O. The aim of the study was to investigate the accuracy and feasibility of this method. METHODS: A total of 105 blood group O women in middle or late pregnancy were enrolled. Fetal DNA in maternal plasma and genomic DNA in umbilical vein blood from newborns were

Differential effect of the ABO blood group on von Willebrand factor collagen binding activity and ristocetin cofactor assay.

Diagnosis of von Willebrand disease requires a combination of quantitative and qualitative tests including the von Willebrand factor ristocetin cofactor assay (vWF:RCo), the von Willebrand factor collagen binding assay (vWF:CB) and von Willebrand factor antigen quantification (vWF:Ag). Genetic factors, especially the ABO blood group, contribute significantly to the variation in vWF levels and function. Recent studies suggest that ethnicity may be another important modulator. We investigated the effect of the ABO blood group on these tests in 52 blood group O and 54 non-group O Chinese blood do
