PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy and safety of topical imiquimod 5% cream in the treatment of eyelid basal cell carcinoma.
METHODS: Four patients with eyelid basal cell carcinoma were treated with imiquimod once daily, 5 days per week, for 6 weeks. Tissue biopsy was taken and clinical examination with slit-lamp microscopy was performed at the beginning of the study and after a follow-up of 12 weeks. Photographic follow-up was performed from the baseline visit to 6, 12 and 26 weeks.

PURPOSE: To report a case of traumatic flap dehiscence and Enterobacter keratitis 34 months after LASIK.
METHODS: A 36-year-old man sustained a flap dehiscence following traumatic right eye gouging by a seagull claw. He presented the following day with uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) in the affected eye of 3/200 and organic foreign body deposits underneath the flap. Systemic and topical antibiotics were administered and urgent surgical debridement and replacement of the LASIK flap was performed. An Enterobacter species was cultured from an intraoperative swab.

We present a case of a 15-year-old boy who developed toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) from sulfacetamide eyedrops. He presented with conjunctival injection and an erythematous rash that rapidly progressed to epidermal necrosis of over 30% of his body. A skin biopsy revealed an acute lichenoid reaction pattern consistent with TEN. After 22 days in hospital, he was left with significant scarring to his eyes, mouth and anogenital areas. An extensive search for an infective aetiology was negative. Previously exposed to bactrim tablets, he used Bleph-10 eyedrops 3 days before admission to hospital.

We treated 11 patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis for four to nine months with topical cyclosporine as a 2% dilution in castor oil. No significant side effects occurred, except for mild and transient burning upon administration. Patients with distal ulcerative colitis may be refractory to standard drug therapy. 5-Aminosalicylate, the active moiety of sulfasalazine, is effective topically in new onset distal colitis. Six patients with distal colitis unresponsive to sulfasalazine and corticosteroids had a prompt and dramatic response to the administration of 5-aminosalicylate enemas with clinical, sigmoidoscopic, and histological improvement. Topical 5-aminosalicylate should be a useful addition to the current available therapies for some patients with refractory distal ulcerative colitis.
