The association between parafunctional oral habits and temporomandibular disorders development in childhood and adolescence: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) encompass conditions affecting the temporomandibular joints or masticatory muscles, impairing oral health-related quality of life. Parafunctional oral habits have been suggested to be associated with TMDs in children and adolescents. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: Nine electronic databases were searched for observational studies evaluating parafunctional oral habits and TMDs in children and adolescents. Two reviewers independently selected studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias using Joanna Briggs Institute tools. Random-effects meta-anal

Fertility preservation in girls and adolescents with Turner syndrome: lessons for reproductive care in differences of sex development - a mini-review.

Current knowledge regarding fertility preservation (FP) in girls is derived predominantly from pediatric oncology cohorts; however, FP is increasingly being applied to non-oncological conditions associated with impaired fertility, including differences of sex development (DSD). Turner syndrome (TS), characterized by accelerated germ cell depletion beginning during fetal life, represents the DSD condition with the greatest clinical experience in FP. This mini-review summarizes current evidence on ovarian tissue cryopreservation and oocyte cryopreservation in TS. Available data support the techn

Development and Validation of a Tool to Assess Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Teachers on School Adolescents' Mental Health (KAP-TAM).

BACKGROUND: Adolescent students are mostly experiencing an increase in mental health issues. Most of the students' precious time is spent with their teachers. The first place adolescents seek is to obtain knowledge from their teachers. Teachers are essential for early screening, identifying, and connecting students with appropriate mental health support services. Therefore, the study aimed to evaluate the degree of mental health Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) among teachers who work with adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The tool development encompasses four phases, that is, the

Atypical development of white matter structural networks in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a graph theory study.

BACKGROUND: Atypical brain connectivity is considered a key neurobiological feature underlying the heterogeneous clinical manifestations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, findings on brain networks in ASD are inconsistent, likely owing to the effects of developmental factors. In addition, how large-scale brain networks in ASD differ across developmental stages remains unclear. We aimed to elucidate the atypical developmental patterns of white matter (WM) structural networks in children and adolescents with ASD using a graph-theoretical approach. METHODS: Diffusion/T1-weighted brain

Intergenerational development of rumination in adolescents with internalizing disorders: The mediating role of maternal rejecting parenting style and intergenerational trauma.

BACKGROUND: As a cognitive vulnerability factor for adolescent internalizing problems, rumination develops through several main mechanisms, with intergenerational transmission being one of the significant mechanisms. However, the specific pathways of intergenerational transmission remain unclear, particularly regarding the contributions of parenting style and intergenerational transmission of trauma. OBJECTIVE: The study investigates how maternal rumination contributes to the development of rumination in adolescents with internalizing disorders. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We included 130 pair

Talking to migrant children and adolescents with cancer: development of a multimodal skills training in migrant-sensitive communication for paediatric oncologists.

UNLABELLED: Migration remains a risk factor for unequal treatment in the healthcare system. Communication plays a key role in bridging linguistic and sociocultural differences, particularly in medically complex and ethically demanding fields such as paediatric oncology. We aim to improve the quality of intercultural conversations between paediatric patients with life-threatening diseases, their parents, and physicians. This is a monocentric, single-blind, cluster randomised interventional feasibility trial which analysed intercultural conversations to develop a skills training programme in mig

Developing Peer-Mentored Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents With Mild-To-Borderline Intellectual Disability and Anxiety: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Youth with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk of developing anxiety disorders. Adapted CBT shows potential for youth with intellectual disabilities, but evidence for effectiveness is limited and mixed, urging the need for further optimisation. This study aims to develop a peer-mentored CBT intervention, together with and for youth with mild-to-borderline intellectual disability and anxiety, based on scientific evidence, clinical expertise and patient preferences. METHODS: In the intervention development phase, 40 stakeholders (youth with intellectual disability, paren

The balancing act of app creation: Navigating the user-centred design of an industry-developed app for adolescents with menstrual pain.

Menstrual pain affects over half of menstruating adolescents, and there is a desire for accessible, adjunct treatments, such as behavioural health interventions in mobile health (mHealth) formats. To date, no mHealth apps for adolescents with menstrual pain have been designed with youth. Although user-centred design is best practice, many challenges can arise, particularly when working with industry partners in the design process. We report on the development and usability testing phase of an industry-developed app for adolescents with menstrual pain, along with exploration of challenges and e

Childhood adversity and psychotic-like experiences in adolescence: Investigating a pathway via disrupted pubertal and grey matter development.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity increases psychosis risk, but the biological mechanisms responsible remain elusive. A possible but underexplored pathway involves altered pubertal and grey matter (GM) development. METHODS: In youth from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (N = 3462), we investigated the effect of adversity at age 9-11 (indexing threat, socioeconomic deprivation and interpersonal deprivation) on psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) four years later, and the mediating role of pubertal timing and tempo. We then investigated whether pathways could be further explained by

Development of a generative AI agent for family support in implementing family-based treatment for children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Family-based treatment (FBT) is a first-line psychotherapy for children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, families must understand the principles of FBT, provide meal support, and manage their children's pathological behaviors. Difficulties occur outside clinic hours when it is impossible to consult professionals. This "support gap" increases caregivers' psychological distress and threatens their treatment continuity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first domain-specific generative artificial intelligence (AI) agent designed to provide situation-speci

A mobile game to promote ART adherence among adolescents living with HIV in Eswatini: Development and prototype testing of "The Conqueror".

BACKGROUND: In Eswatini, adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) face disproportionate challenges in achieving optimal anti-retroviral therapy (ART) adherence, as evidenced by a viral load suppression (VLS) of 77.8% among those aged 15-19 years, compared to the 96.2% VLS observed among adults on ART. While mobile phone ownership has surged globally, facilitating the use of mobile phone-based interventions in healthcare, there remains limited evidence on the development and testing of such interventions for improving ART adherence among ALHIV. This study aimed to design a mobile gaming application

Dissimilar Effects of Selenite and Selenium Nanoparticles on Skeletal Muscle Development Unrelated to GPx1 Activity During Adolescence in Rats.

Background/Objectives: During adolescence, the critical growth period, the antioxidant selenium (Se), either as sodium selenite or selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), has shown contrasting effects on adipose tissue (AT) in rats, due to its role in insulin signaling. Since skeletal muscle (SKM) is also a key insulin-target tissue, this study aimed to assess whether a similar effect occurs in this tissue. Methods: Three groups of male adolescent rats (n = 18) were used: control (C), selenite supplemented (S), and SeNPs supplemented (NS). Low doses of Se were administered via drinking water in both s

Developing normative values and predictive models for the 6-minute walk test across diverse adolescent developmental stages.

The six-minute walking test (6MWT) is commonly used to measure functional capacity in field settings, primarily through the distance covered. This study aims to establish reference curves for the six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and peak heart rate (PHR) and develop a predictive equation for cardiovascular capacity in Tunisian children and adolescents. A total of 1501 participants (706 boys and 795 girls), aged 10-18 years, were recruited from schools in Tunisia. The Lambda (L), Mu (M), and Sigma (S) methods (LMS method) were employed to develop smoothed percentile curves for 6MWD and PHR. M
