Understanding HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Questions of U.S. Health Care Providers: Unique Perspectives from the PrEPline Clinical Teleconsultation Service.

Introduction: Fewer than a quarter of people considered to have factors associated with HIV acquisition are prescribed pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the United States. Prior studies demonstrate disparities in provider comfort and knowledge regarding PrEP, suggesting a need for provider capacity building to support widespread PrEP availability. This study examined real-world PrEP clinical questions/cases from providers to a teleconsultation service to identify knowledge gaps and improve PrEP-related training materials and clinical guidelines. Methods: The National Clinician Consultation Ce

"Seeing Is Believing": Dermatoscope Facilitated Breast Examination of the Breastfeeding Woman with Nipple Pain.

BACKGROUND: It is well recognized that breastmilk provides optimal nutrition and immunological protection for infants. Many women, however, experience nipple pain while breastfeeding, leading to premature cessation of nursing. To overcome these difficulties, timely diagnosis is crucial to effectively treat the underlying pathology and permit resumption of breastfeeding. Examination of the superficial breast plays a key role in accurate diagnosis. Traditional direct inspection is clearly inadequate for this task. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The dermatoscope is a useful tool, enlarging and illuminat

Health-Related Values Discussions With Patients Receiving Allogeneic and Autologous Stem Cell Transplant and Chimeric Antigen Receptor Therapy (CAR-T): Implementation of an Early Nurse Practitioner-Led Primary Palliative Care Intervention.

Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant and chimeric antigen receptor-T cell therapy face significant uncertainty, distress, risk of serious treatment-related complications, and disease relapse. Although palliative care and advance care planning offer clear benefits, both remain underutilized or delayed in this patient population. To address this gap, a nurse practitioner (NP)-led primary palliative care intervention was implemented in the outpatient Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Services at a comprehensive cancer center. This paper provides an overview of the prog

Vision and eye health: moving into the digital age with instrument-based vision screening.

Significant advancements in vision screening research are leading to improved design, functionality, and reliability of screening tools. Presently, two vision screening approaches are available to school nurses for children ages 3 years and older: optotype-based screening and instrument-based screening. Optotype-based screening pertains to tests of visual acuity using optotypes (e.g., pictures, letters, and numbers), which children identify to determine visual acuity. Instrument-based screening pertains to automated devices that measure amblyogenic risk factors, such as refractive error, media

Suicide attempt by intravenous potassium self-poisoning: a case report.

Introduction. Overdose of potassium is not as frequently encountered in clinical practice as hyperkalaemia due to acute or chronic renal disease. However, potassium overdoses leading to serious consequences do occur. Case Presentation. A 20-year-old nurse student presented with a cardiac arrest with asystole rhythm. Beside the patient were found four 50-mL syringes and empty vials of potassium chloride (20 mL, 10%). After initial resuscitation with epinephrine, 125 mL of a 4.2% intravenous solution of sodium bicarbonate were injected which resulted in the recovery of an effective cardiac activ

Facilitators and Barriers to Providing Trauma-Informed Abortion Care.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals who undergo abortion are up to three times more likely to have experienced prior traumatic events compared with the general reproductive age population, including sexual assault, interpersonal violence, or adverse childhood events. We sought to elicit and understand perceived facilitators and barriers to providing trauma-responsive abortion care among abortion providers. METHODS: We recruited providers from Chicago-area abortion clinics to participate in a 45-minute, semi-structured one-on-one phone or Zoom interview. We used thematic content analysis to analyze data,

FAMISHED for support: recovering elders after cardiac events.

BACKGROUND: Heart disease causes disproportionately heavy burdens on unpartnered elders (widowed, divorced, never married) who have limited social resources to contend with recovery demands and complications resulting from acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Research suggests that the availability of social support improves recovery after AMI and CABG, yet functional support expressly designed to modify health and stimulate recovery remains unspecified. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) in the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) role who provide social s

Rethinking Transradial Compression Band Practice.

BACKGROUND: Transradial access (TRA) is a standard approach to cardiac catheterization. Following the procedure, air-filled compression bands are often used to achieve hemostasis at the access site. Despite research supporting early, gradual deflation to minimize complications, there is no established best practice for band deflation. At our urban academic medical center, the lack of a standardized compression band deflation protocol resulted in varied start times and amounts of air removed with each attempt, as well as inconsistent documentation. PURPOSE: The aim of this quality improvement

Detecting Sociodemographic Biases in the Content and Quality of Large Language Model-Generated Nursing Care: Cross-Sectional Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly applied in health care. However, concerns remain that their nursing care recommendations may reflect patients' sociodemographic attributes rather than clinical needs. While this risk is acknowledged, there is a lack of empirical evidence evaluating sociodemographic bias in LLM-generated nursing care plans. OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential biases in nursing care plans generated by LLMs, we focused on whether outputs differ systematically based on patients' sociodemographic characteristics and assessed the implications for equitable n

Greece reports prototype intervention with first peripherally inserted central catheter: case report and literature review.

Placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), definitely offers a clear advantage over any other method regarding central venous catheterization. Its ultrasonographic orientation enhances significantly its accuracy, safety and efficacy, making this method extremely comfortable for the patient who can continue his or her therapy even in an outpatient basis. We present the first reported case of a PICCS insertion in Greece, which has been performed by a university-degree nurse. The aim of this review of literature was to present the evolution in nursing practice in Greece. A PICC

Integrating a Large Language Model to Streamline Nursing Handover Documentation Across Multiple Hospitals in Taiwan: Development and Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: The global nursing shortage, exacerbated by heavy workloads and high turnover rates associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to undermine care quality and nurse well-being. Although digital health technologies have enhanced coordination, improved communication, and reduced clinical errors in nursing practice, they have also increased nurses' documentation burden. Advances in large language models (LLMs) and other generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools facilitate the generation of accurate reports from electronic medical records (EMRs), thereby streamlining documen
