A 1.5-year-old neutered male Labrador retriever dog was presented with a 1-month history of pelvic limb lameness. Physical examination revealed lumbosacral and pelvic pain. Diagnostic imaging findings were consistent with discospondylitis and bilateral sacroiliitis. Brucellosis was definitively diagnosed with rapid slide agglutination (RSAT) and agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) tests. Brucella canis has not been associated with sacroiliitis and should be included as a differential diagnosis for dogs presented with clinical or radiographic signs of sacroiliitis.

BACKGROUND: Two weeks after the cyclone during October-November 1999, several persons in Orissa suffered from a febrile illness with haemorrhagic manifestations. Serum samples from a few such patients tested positive for anti-leptospiral IgM antibodies. We conducted a study in four villages that were flooded after the cyclone to examine the possibility of leptospirosis being the cause of the outbreak.

Leptospirosis is a common disease in dogs, despite their current vaccination. Vet surgeons may use a serological test to verify their clinical observations. A serological analysis of mycelial antigens of Thermoactinomyces vulgaris in immunodiffusion with human sera revealed five individual antigens. Three antigens were proteins, sensitive to pronase and soluble in phenol. Two were cationic polysaccharides, sensitive to sodium periodate, and containing glucosamine and muramic acid. Cerebrospinal fluid findings indicated Brucella meningitis with high protein count, low sugar level and pleocystosis. Fifty sera collected from 12 different species of free-living game animals in game parks in the Northern Natal were tested against 8 Leptospira interrogans antigens using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Six out of 50 animals had titres, all less than 100. Three of these animals had titres to serovar mini, 1 animal to tarrasovi, and 3 animals had multi-serovar reactions, 1 to mini and hardjo, and 1 to tarrasovi, copenhageni and pomona.
