Biocompatibility and biodegradability of multilayered polymeric materials for tissue regeneration.

The tissue regeneration, especially the tympanic membrane regeneration, remains a significant challenge in otorhinolaryngology, necessitating the development of the advanced biomaterials. This study evaluates the biocompatibility and biodegradation of three novel multi-layer polymer scaffolds: KPC (carboxymethyl cellulose/polyethylene oxide/polyvinylpyrrolidone/chitosan), PHC (pullulan/hyaluronic acid/chitosan), and HCA (hyaluronic acid/chitosan/alginate), that designed as biomimetic matrices for tissue repair. The materials were subcutaneously implanted into Wistar rats for 21st and 45th days

Structure-Tailoring Cerium Nanozymes with Self-Cascade ROS Scavenging Catalysis Modulate the Microbiota-Gut-Joint Axis for Rheumatoid Arthritis Therapy.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is closely associated with intestinal microbiota dysbiosis, highlighting the therapeutic potential of targeting the microbiota-gut-joint axis. Current interventions often overlook the cascade nature of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in driving intestinal and systemic inflammation. Herein, a valence-engineered CeOX-based nanozyme with self-cascade catalytic activity is developed, mimicking sequential oxidase-superoxide dismutase-peroxidase functions to enable continuous ROS scavenging while minimizing oxygen generation. By precisely tuning Ce3+/Ce4+ ratios fr

Alginate encapsulation enhanced the gastrointestinal stability and bactericidal efficacy of an optimized Salmonella phage cocktail for oral delivery in poultry feed.

Salmonella is a leading cause of gastroenteritis, and it is transmitted via contaminated water and food sources, especially poultry products. Many serovars are resistant to frontline antibiotics, necessitating the need for alternative treatment strategies. Bacteriophage (phage) therapy offers a promising alternative to antibiotics for Salmonella infection control in poultry, however, oral delivery is limited by the highly acidic gastric environment. Thus, this study aimed to optimize a cocktail of encapsulated phages to preserve and enhance their shelf-life, viability, target release and activ

LBL Noninvasively Peelable Biointerfacial Adhesives for Cutaneo-Inspired pH/Tactility Artificial Receptors.

Besides barrier functions, skin possesses multiple sentiences to external stimuli (e.g., temperature, force, and humidity) for human-outside interaction. Thus, skincare should be taken very seriously, especially by patients with sensory disorders. However, currently available skin-mimicking devices are always limited by so much insufficient response functions and nontunable interface behaviors so as not to realize precise health monitoring and self-defense against injury. Herein, a bioinspired cutaneous receptor-perceptual system (CRPS) patch is presented, integrating hybrid pH indicators and

Use of anti-reflux medications in infants under 1 year of age: a retrospective drug utilization study using national prescription reimbursement data.

Non-specific symptoms such as irritability, vomiting, and back arching during the infant period are often attributed to gastroesophageal reflux. While numerous studies have shown no significant benefit to the use of acid suppressant medications in this population, these medications are frequently prescribed in response to these symptoms. Our goals were to understand how often children were being prescribed this medication. To do this, data was extracted from a national database for reimbursement of prescribed medications through the General Medical Services scheme (GMS). Infants aged less than

Periodontal regeneration in a buccal dehiscence model in monkeys after application of enamel matrix proteins.

There is increasing evidence that cells of the epithelial root sheath synthesize enamel matrix proteins and that these proteins play a fundamental role in the formation of acellular cementum, the key tissue in the development of a functional periodontium. The purpose of the present study was to explore the effect of locally applied enamel matrix and different protein fractions of the matrix on periodontal regeneration in a buccal dehiscence model in monkeys. Buccal, mucoperiosteal flaps were raised from the canine to the 1st molar on each side of the maxilla. The buccal alveolar bone plate, th

Single-nanozyme based hydrogel patch for total antioxidant capacity and pH synchronous visual monitoring.

Simultaneously visual monitoring of diversified indicators in sweat and food is crucial for healthcare and food safety assessment. While nanozymes have been explored for colorimetric detection of various biomarkers in sweat, monitoring different biomarkers with a single nanozyme remains challenging. Herein, a novel strategy for real-time synchronous monitoring of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and pH value using a single nanozyme decorated hydrogel patch has been demonstrated. Fe2+ doped calcium peroxide nanoparticles (Fe-CaO2) were encapsulated in a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) with

Dynamic Cross-Linked Binder for Stabilizing MoS2 Anodes with Enhanced Sodium-Ion Storage Kinetics.

Enhancing the durability of Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) anodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) requires not only structural optimization of active materials but also rational design of the binder system. In this work, a polymeric sodium alginate-graft-polyacrylamide binder modified with 5 wt % boric acid (SP/5Ba) is developed via graft copolymerization, introducing boric acid-mediated dynamic cross-linking and hydrogen-bond-assisted interactions into the polymer framework. This adaptable network structure enables effective stress dissipation during repeated sodiation/desodiation, thereby contri

A pH-responsive metal-lignin nanozyme microneedle system for stage-adapted therapy of infected skin wounds.

Infected wounds feature a dynamic microenvironment characterized by persistent bacterial infection and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), yet existing therapies often lack the ability to dynamically adapt to the evolving wound microenvironment. We developed a microenvironment-responsive microneedle delivery system (RuCe@D-P MNs) integrating a bimetallic lignin nanozyme for spatiotemporally adaptive wound therapy. The optimal RuCe@D-P nanozyme was synthesized by screening lignin-metal assemblies based on assembly yield, particle size, and enzyme-like activities (peroxidase/superoxide dism

Interfacial engineering of a chitosan-tannic acid layer on bacterial cellulose for a high performance forward osmosis membrane toward sustainable juice concentration and reduced microplastic release.

Bacterial cellulose (BC), a renewable biopolymer, has emerged as a promising substrate for membrane fabrication due to its biocompatibility and sustainability. However, the intrinsic heterogeneity in BC fiber distribution results in polydisperse inter-fiber voids, impeding its widespread application in membrane technologies. To mitigate the inherent surface roughness and microporosity of BC substrates, a chitosan-tannic acid interlayer with tunable hydrophilicity was engineered. This interfacial modification facilitated the subsequent formation of an ultrathin, highly cross-linked polyamide se

From copper to curcumin: the role of fillers in the development of sustainable marine antifouling polymer composites.

Marine biofouling remains a persistent global challenge, causing severe deterioration of offshore infrastructures and marine vessels, which results in significant economic losses and ecological concerns. Conventional antifouling strategies relying on toxic biocides (copper, organotins) face stringent regulatory prohibition due to ecosystem devastation, creating an urgent demand for sustainable alternatives. Here, we critically evaluate emerging bio-based antifouling technologies, demonstrating that nanocomposite-polymer systems and natural bioactive integration offer viable pathways toward tox

Fabrication and controlled release behavior of metal-polyphenol-decorated alginate hydrogel beads.

Hydrogel-based controlled release systems are widely used in pharmaceutical and agricultural fields. To achieve controlled release of hydrophilic drugs, which otherwise release rapidly through hydrated polymer networks, we develop a facile ferric ion co-crosslinking strategy to fabricate composite hydrogel beads. The highly porous composite hydrogel beads were prepared by blending recycled household formaldehyde adsorbent (RFA) with sodium alginate (Alg) at a 1:1 (w/w) ratio, followed by Fe3+-induced crosslinking and subsequent surface functionalization with tannic acid (TA). Through altering

Orally delivered, pH-resistant dual coated extracellular vesicles restore intestinal barrier function and suppress colitis.

Oral therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) requires drug formulations that can withstand gastrointestinal stress and achieve localized action at the inflamed mucosa, yet existing extracellular vesicles (EVs)-based or small-molecule approaches often fail due to poor stability and limited colonic delivery. This study aimed to develop a dual-coated oral delivery platform that enhances gastrointestinal stability and targeted drug release. We engineered macrophage-derived EVs sequentially coated with a cationic lipid and sodium alginate (SA) to encapsulate 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). This

Collaborative metabolic curation of an emerging model marine bacterium, Alteromonas macleodii ATCC 27126.

Inferring the metabolic capabilities of an organism from its genome is a challenging process, relying on computationally-derived or manually curated metabolic networks. Manual curation can correct mistakes in the draft network and add missing reactions based on the literature, but requires significant expertise and is often the bottleneck for high-quality metabolic reconstructions. Here, we present a synopsis of a community curation workshop for the model marine bacterium Alteromonas macleodii ATCC 27126 and its genome database in BioCyc, focusing on pathways for utilizing organic carbon and n

Novel pH-Responsive PSS-Loaded Chitosan Matrix Nanoparticles Ameliorate Pressure Overload-Induced Cardiac Hypertrophy.

Cardiac hypertrophy is a critical contributor to cardiac dysfunction and the development of heart failure, yet effective therapeutic strategies remain limited. Propylene glycol alginate sulfate sodium (PSS) is a marine sulfated polysaccharide drug used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and has shown cardiac function benefits. Here, we designed a pH-responsive PSS-loaded nanoparticle drug delivery system. It was self-assembled by negatively charged PSS with positively charged trimethyl chitosan glycocholic acid (TMC-GA) via electrostatic interaction, and further stabilized the nanopar

Construction of built-in correction photoelectrochemical sensing platform for diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

The occurrence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is strongly associated with the progressive aggregation of a 42-amino-acid fragment derived from the amyloid-β precursor protein (Aβ1-42). Therefore, it is crucial to establish a versatile platform that can effectively detect Aβ1-42 to aid in the early-stage preclinical diagnosis of AD. Herein, we introduce a specialized split-type analytical platform that enables sensitive and accurate monitoring of Aβ1-42 based on a self-corrected photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing system. To realize this design, gelatinized Ti3C2@Bi2WO6 Schottky heterojunctions wer

A rapid-floating natural polysaccharide gel-raft with double-effect for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent gastrointestinal condition characterized by regurgitating stomach contents into the esophagus, causing mucosal damage or erosion. Clinical physical protection treatment mainly relies on the use of floating rafts. Bletilla striata (BS) is widely regarded as the first-choice drug for treating digestive tract injuries in Chinese Medicine. The rapid-floating gel-raft (B-R) was prepared via a one-step swelling method using natural BS polysaccharide and glyceryl monooleate. Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) were loaded to further prepare P/B-R acc

Diabetes development increased concentrations of the conjugated bile acid, taurocholic acid in serum, while treatment with microencapsulated-taurocholic acid exerted no hypoglycaemic effects.

CONTEXT: The bile acid taurocholic acid (TCA) is endogenously produced, and has shown formulation-stabilising effects when incorporated into microcapsules containing potential antidiabetic drugs. This study aimed to develop and characterise TCA-microcapsules, and test their antidiabetic effects, in an animal model of Type 1 diabetes (T1D). METHODS: Using the polymer sodium alginate (SA), SA-microcapsules (control) and TCA-microcapsules (test) were prepared, and assessed for morphology, surface composition, chemical and thermal stability, swelling, buoyancy, mechanical, release and rheological

Efficacy and Safety of a Natural Remedy for the Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux: A Double-Blinded Randomized-Controlled Study.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is a common, chronic, relapsing symptom. Often people self-diagnose and self-treat it even though health-related quality of life is significantly impaired. In the lack of a valid alternative approach, current treatments focus on suppression of gastric acid secretion by the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), but people with GER have a significantly lower response rate to therapy. We designed a randomized double-blinded controlled clinical study to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of a formulation based on sodium alginate/bicarbonate in combination with extra

OM2, a Novel Oligomannuronate-Chromium(III) Complex, Promotes Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Lipid Metabolism in 3T3-L1 Adipocytes via the AMPK-PGC1α Pathway.

BACKGROUND: In our previous studies, we prepared novel oligomannuronate-chromium(III) complexes (OM2, OM4) from marine alginate, and found that these compounds sensitize insulin action better than oligomannuronate(OM), chromium, and metformin in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells. In the present study, we studied their effects on mitochondrial biogenesis, lipid metabolism, and the underlying molecular mechanisms in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We firstly used the pGL3-PGC1α and pGL3-ATGL promoter plasmids to compare their effects on PGC1α and ATGL transcription a
