Left coronary artery anatomy in patients with bicuspid aortic valves.

The anatomy of the proximal left coronary artery in 33 adult patients with bicuspid aortic valves was compared with that in 33 adult patients with aortic valve disease of other aetiologies and with that in 50 adult control patients with no valve or congenital heart disease. Patients with bicuspid aortic valves had a higher incidence of immediate bifurcation of the left main coronary artery, of left main coronary length less than 10 mm, and of left coronary artery dominance. The mean length of the left main coronary artery was significantly less in the patients with bicuspid aortic valves. Thes

Automated Morphological Phenotyping Identifies Anatomic Patterns Associated with Early Type I Endoleak after Endovascular Aortic Repair.

OBJECTIVE: Early type I endoleak (T1EL) following endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) remains a clinically important complication. Risk stratification is traditionally based on binary morphological thresholds, but their ability to predict early failure is limited. This study aimed to use fully automated volume segmentation (FAVS) to identify anatomic phenotypes associated with early T1EL. METHODS: This was a multicentre, retrospective cohort study. Pre-operative computed tomography angiography of patients undergoing EVAR was analysed using FAVS, with matched National Vascular Registry clinical

Anatomical classification of the peripheral right hepatic duct: early identification of a preventable source of morbidity and mortality in adult live donor liver transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of our classification on right graft adult live donor liver transplantation (ALDLT) outcomes. METHODS: Three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) reconstructions were used to classify the hilar and sectorial biliary anatomy of 71 consecutive live liver donors. Four possible clinical types were defined, based on the normal (N) or abnormal (A) features of the corresponding hilar/sectorial ducts: type I, N/N; type II, N/A; type III, A/N; and type IV, A/A. We subsequently performed an analysis of the operative outcomes based on t

Morphological Characteristics of the Double Mental Foramen and Its Relevance in Clinical Practice: An Observational Study.

The mental foramen (MF) is an opening found bilaterally on the anterolateral aspect of the mandible; it can be round or oval and have different diameters. One of the anatomical variants of the jaw is the presence of an accessory mental foramen (AMF). These are usually smaller than the MF and can be located above, below, or to the sides of the main MF. The objective of this study was to recognize the presence of AMF in dry jaws of the Chilean population and collect information about its clinical relevance reported in the literature. In this descriptive observational study, we have collected dri

Impact of 3D printing technology on the comprehension of surgical liver anatomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Surgical planning in liver resection depends on the precise understanding of the three-dimensional (3D) relation of tumors to the intrahepatic vascular trees. This study aimed to investigate the impact of 3D printing (3DP) technology on the understanding of surgical liver anatomy. METHODS: We selected four hepatic tumors that were previously resected. For each tumor, a virtual 3D reconstruction (VIR) model was created from multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and was prototyped using a 3D printer. Forty-five surgical residents were evenly assigned to each group (3DP,

Race-ethnic differences in patent foramen ovale, atrial septal aneurysm, and right atrial anatomy among ischemic stroke patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke remains a substantial cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States. Racial differences in stroke incidence and mortality persist with well-known excesses among blacks. Information on stroke among Hispanics is limited. In particular, little is known about whether patent foramen ovale (PFO), atrial septal aneurysm (ASA), and other atrial anomalies associated with cryptogenic stroke differ among minority populations. METHODS: As a part of the PFO in Cryptogenic Stroke Study, transesophageal echocardiography was performed in a cohort of 630 ischemic stroke

Surgical Outcomes of Carotid Endarterectomy in Patients with Twisted Carotid Bifurcation: Focus on Postoperative Nerve Complications.

Twisted carotid bifurcation, a condition in which the internal carotid artery is positioned medially to the external carotid artery at the carotid bifurcation, is one of the anatomical variations encountered during carotid endarterectomy. Although previous studies have suggested that carotid endarterectomy can be performed safely in twisted carotid bifurcation cases, few have focused on postoperative neurological complications. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate postoperative neurological complications in carotid endarterectomy cases with twisted carotid bifurcation. This study included p

A multicenter experience of through-the-scope balloon-assisted enteroscopy in surgically altered gastrointestinal anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Surgically altered gastrointestinal anatomy poses challenges for deep enteroscopy. Current overtube-assisted methods have long procedure times and utilize endoscopes with smaller working channels that preclude use of standard accessories. A through-the-scope balloon-assisted enteroscopy (TTS-BAE) device uses standard endoscopes with a large working channel to allow metallic and plastic stent insertion. We aim to determine the efficacy and safety of TTS-BAE in patients with altered surgical anatomy. METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter study of TTS-BAE in altered anatomy patients
