Is Bacterial Meningitis a Risk Factor for Developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial meningitis is a severe disease with high morbidity. Many medical conditions are known to be associated with meningitis including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The goal of the present study was to examine the frequency of ADHD in children who had had bacterial meningitis. An additional goal was to assess the odds ratio for ADHD in children who had had meningitis and children who had not had it. METHODS: The sample comprised 60 children who had had meningitis in the first year of their lives and 60 control children who had not had the disease. ADHD was

Educational and Health Outcomes of Children Treated for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 39 million people worldwide; in isolation, it doubles annual health care costs and, when associated with comorbid mental health problems, it quadruples the costs. OBJECTIVE: To compare the education and health outcomes of schoolchildren treated for ADHD with their peers. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this population-based cohort study, individual-level record linkage was performed of 8 Scotland-wide administrative databases covering dispensed prescriptions, admissions to acute and psychiatric hospitals, maternity rec

Is adult-onset attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder frequent in clinical practice?

Recent population-based longitudinal studies concluded that most adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms would not have a childhood history of ADHD, leading to the concept of adult-onset ADHD. In a large, well-characterized clinical population of 446 adults with a primary complaint of ADHD, we reported a low frequency of adult-onset ADHD (6.9%), being a primary isolated condition in 2.8%. They had less severe symptoms and tendencies for higher hypersomnolence disorder comorbidity than patients with typical childhood-onset ADHD. Our findings reinforce the requiremen

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Diagnosis: An Activation-Executive Model.

Attention deficit with, or without, hyperactivity and impulsivity (ADHD) is categorized as neuro-developmental disorder. ADHD is a common disorder in childhood and one of the most frequent conditions affecting school ages. This disorder is characterized by a persistent behavioral pattern associated with inattention, over-activity (or hyperactivity), and difficulty in controlling impulses. Current research suggests the existence of certain patterns of cortical activation and executive control, which could more objectively identify ADHD. Through the use of a risk and resilience model, this resea

The executive control network and symptomatic improvement in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: One neurodevelopmental theory hypothesizes remission of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to result from improved prefrontal top-down control, while ADHD, independent of the current diagnosis, is characterized by stable non-cortical deficits (Halperin & Schulz, 2006). We tested this theory using resting state functional MRI (fMRI) data in a large sample of adolescents with remitting ADHD, persistent ADHD, and healthy controls. METHODS: Participants in this follow-up study were 100 healthy controls and 129 adolescents with ADHD combined type at baseline (mean age at b

Gambling and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) in a Population of French Students.

Attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADD/ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can be exacerbated by psychosocial factors. Various studies confirm that the severity of a psychiatric disorder, particularly when it comes to ADHD, is strongly correlated with the amount of use. This study (1) evaluated the association between ADHD and gambling among young students; (2) determined which symptom among ADHD's three symptoms (attention deficit, hyperactivity, or impulsivity) had the strongest association with video game addiction and gambling; and (3) determined the impact o

An Appraisal of the Life of Charles Thomas Jackson as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Charles Thomas Jackson claimed to have original ideas that led to the creation of guncotton, the electromagnetic telegraph, and the use of ether as an anesthetic. There was, though, a gap between when the idea was enunciated and when it became reality, with other individuals accomplishing the latter. An examination of Charles Jackson's life reveals a pattern of behavior that is compatible with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with an associated diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder. These diagnoses are explored in the context of Jackson's life to explain why he did not carry his i

[Theta/beta ratio (NEBA) in the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

INTRODUCTION: In July 2013, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the use of NEBA as the first device for the complementary evaluation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is based on quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and includes the standardised theta/beta ratio, the results of which were consistent with both the medical and psychological clinical evaluation. Likewise, it has proved to be a useful tool for determining whether the ADHD is primary, secondary or comorbid to another pathology. Yet, to date no publications have specified whether it is a total theta

Disrupted network architecture of the resting brain in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders of childhood. Neuroimaging investigations of ADHD have traditionally sought to detect localized abnormalities in discrete brain regions. Recent years, however, have seen the emergence of complementary lines of investigation into distributed connectivity disturbances in ADHD. Current models emphasize abnormal relationships between default network-involved in internally directed mentation and lapses of attention-and task positive networks, especially ventral attention network. However,

Clinical pharmacology of comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Tourette syndrome.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common comorbid condition in people with Tourette syndrome (TS), reported in 60-80% of TS clinical samples. The comorbidity between TS and ADHD appears to have a complex pathogenesis and genetic factors can be implicated. Even if the etiological relationship between TS and ADHD is unclear, it is clear that individuals with both TS and ADHD are at a much greater risk for a variety of poor outcomes. It has been largely reported that the presence of comorbid symptoms seems to have a more significant influence on the patient's quality of

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and cardiac vagal control: a systematic review.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by behavioural disinhibition, deficient emotional self-regulation, inattention, and hyperactivity. The constellation of deficits found in children with ADHD implicates autonomic dysregulation characterized by deficient control of the heart by parasympathetic influences. While it is generally assumed that autonomic regulation of the heart is impaired during ADHD, the information pertaining to this dysregulation is limited. A systematic review of three databases was conducted between January and March 2012 for peer reviewed publica

In utero exposure to ischemic-hypoxic conditions and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between ischemic-hypoxic conditions (IHCs) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by gestational age and race/ethnicity. METHODS: Nested case-control study using the Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) medical records. The study cohort included children aged 5 to 11 years who were delivered and cared for in the KPSC between 1995 and 2010 (N = 308,634). Case children had a diagnosis of ADHD and received ≥ 2 prescriptions specific to ADHD during the follow-up period. For each case, 5 control children were matched by age at diagnosis. E

Cingulate, frontal, and parietal cortical dysfunction in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Functional and structural neuroimaging have identified abnormalities of the brain that are likely to contribute to the neuropathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In particular, hypofunction of the brain regions comprising the cingulo-frontal-parietal cognitive-attention network have been consistently observed across studies. These are major components of neural systems that are relevant to ADHD, including cognitive/attention networks, motor systems, and reward/feedback-based processing systems. Moreover, these areas interact with other brain circuits that have bee

Safety of stimulant treatment in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: part II.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common childhood psychiatric disorder and in at least 50% of cases persists into adulthood. Treatment of ADHD with stimulants is one of the oldest and most effective pharmacological treatments in psychiatry. Yet, there continues to be controversy over the safety of stimulant medications in the treatment of ADHD. AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: This paper is a continuation of an earlier paper that reviewed the safety profile of newer stimulant agents, especially in relation to special populations. This part II r

A Rare Presentation of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A recommendation to be more alert!

We report the case of a 7 year-old Omani girl with tuberous sclerosis (TS), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder (BD), at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH), Oman. For a year she had been suffering from hyperactivity, aggression, over talkativeness, insomnia, risk-taking behaviour, distractibility, poor attention and seizures. This clinical picture evolved slowly, but was progressive in nature. Before the consultation at her local health centre, she was given four drugs without being properly investigated; she continued to deteriorate. In SQUH, she showed

Latent class subtyping of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic studies of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) generally use discrete DSM-IV subtypes to define diagnostic status. To improve correspondence between phenotypic variance and putative susceptibility genes, multivariate classification methods such as latent class analysis (LCA) have been proposed. The aim of this study was to perform LCA in a sample of 1,010 individuals from a nationwide recruitment of unilineal nuclear families with at least one child with ADHD and another child either affected or clearly unaffected. METHOD: LCA models containing one through 10 cl

Clinical and neuropsychological profile in a sample of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and neuropsychological findings in children with suspicion of attention deficity hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The assessment involved 150 children aged 7 to 14 referred to NANI at UNIFESP. RESULTS: 75 children (55 M and 20 F) fulfilled the criteria for ADHD, among which 35 were of the inattentive type, 28 of combined type and 12 were hyperactive/impulsive. There was negative correlation between the digit score and the Corsi test. Children with hyperactivity and impulsivity had a low performance for functional memory. Children with o

Long-term outcomes of stimulant medication in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The rate of prescribing of stimulant medication for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been progressively increasing in countries such as the USA and Australia. In the short term, stimulant medication is effective in reducing the symptoms of ADHD and appears well tolerated with relatively minor side effects. In the long term, much of the benefit of stimulant medication disappears after medication is ceased. Studies have demonstrated only marginal improvements in adult outcomes following a period of treatment in childhood. This may be owing to the beneficial ef

Revisiting the role of the prefrontal cortex in the pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Most neural models for the pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have centered on the prefrontal cortex and its interconnections with the striatum and other subcortical structures. However, research only partially supports these models, and they do not correspond with the development of the prefrontal cortex and its interrelated neurocircuitry. The neural and functional development of the prefrontal cortex more closely parallels recovery from ADHD as indicated by the developmental remission of symptomatology. The authors hypothesize that ADHD is due to noncortical

Omega-3 fatty acid status in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Lower levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, in blood have repeatedly been associated with a variety of behavioral disorders including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The exact nature of this relationship is not yet clear. We have studied children with ADHD who exhibited skin and thirst symptoms classically associated with essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency, altered plasma and red blood cell fatty acid profiles, and dietary intake patterns that do not differ significantly from controls. This led us to focus on a potential metabol
