Alcohol-dependent pulmonary inflammation: A role for HMGB-1.

Previous studies have demonstrated that acute alcohol intoxication significantly impairs lung immune responses, which can lead to the tissue … -term effects of adolescent ethanol binge exposure are less studied. We hypothesize that adolescent binge drinking may prime the individual to severe pulmonary distress, when later challenged by a microbial pathogen. Herein, we evaluate a model of adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) exposure to investigate pulmonary pathology after microbial challenge. Ethanol …

Heavy Episodic Drinking and Hazardous Drinking Among Japanese Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study on Prevalence and Associated Factors.

BACKGROUND: No studies have investigated alcohol consumption patterns in a mixed sample of students and employees among Japanese young adults. This study estimated the prevalence of problematic drinking in a sample that includes 18- and 19-year-old individuals and aimed to identify factors related to problematic drinking, which may ultimately contribute to its prevention. METHODS: This cross-sectional study conducted in 2019 included 5500 randomly selected adults (18-24 years) from 11 cities. Data on geographical and socioeconomic characteristics, alcohol consumption, and drinking patterns we

Decreased voluntary alcohol intake and ventral striatal epigenetic and transcriptional remodeling in male Acss2 KO mice.

Metabolic-epigenetic interactions are emerging as key pathways in regulating alcohol-related transcriptional changes in the brain. Recently, … untary alcohol intake. We found that Acss2 KO mice consume significantly less alcohol in a model of binge drinking, an effect primarily driven by males. Genome-wide transcriptional profiling of 7 key brain regions implicated in alcohol and drug use revealed that, following drinking, Acss2 KO mice exhibit blunted gene expression in the ventral striatum. Similarly …

Day-level correlates of nicotine and cannabis vaping among young adults in the United States.

Over the past two decades, vaping has increased in popularity among young adults. Yet, little is known about the daily activities or contexts associated with vaping behavior. The current study examined whether nicotine vaping, cannabis vaping, and dual-substance vaping (i.e., vaping both nicotine and cannabis) fluctuated in tandem with alcohol use and activities on a given day. Data came from the Monitoring the Future Vaping Supplement, a national sample of U.S. young adults. A subsample of people who vaped (N = 330 people) completed up to 14 daily surveys (N = 3686 days). Multilevel logistic

Experiences of forced sex among female patrons of alcohol-serving venues in a South African township.

South Africa has among the highest rates of forced sex worldwide, and alcohol use has consistently been associated with risk of forced sex in South Africa. However, methodological challenges affect the accuracy of forced sex measurements. This study explored the assessment of forced sex among South African women attending alcohol-serving venues and identified factors associated with reporting recent forced sex. Women (n = 785) were recruited from 12 alcohol-serving venues in a peri-urban township in Cape Town. Brief self-administered surveys included questions about lifetime and recent experie

Maternal depressive symptoms as a predictor of alcohol use onset and heavy episodic drinking in youths.

OBJECTIVE: The current study addressed a gap in the literature by investigating the association between maternal depressive symptoms and subsequent timing of their children's alcohol use onset and heavy episodic drinking (HED). Childhood depression/dysthymia symptoms, harsh discipline, and parental positive regard were examined as potential mediators of this relation. METHOD: Longitudinal self- and parent-report data were collected annually from a community sample of 754 youths (50% male; 43% African American) from kindergarten to Grade 11 (ages 5-18 years). The measures administered were the

Maternal risk factors for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: not as simple as it might seem.

Gathering information about drinking during pregnancy is one of the most difficult aspects of studying fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). This information is critical to linking specific risk factors to any particular diagnosis within the FASD continuum. This article reviews highlights from the literature on maternal risk factors for FASD and illustrates that maternal risk is multidimensional, including factors related to quantity, frequency, and timing of alcohol exposure; maternal age; number of pregnancies; number of times the mother has given birth; the mother's body size; nutrition;

Alcoholic rhabdomyolysis: an experimental model in the rat.

The main features of alcoholic rhabdomyolysis-skeletal muscle necrosis, marked elevation of serum creatine phosphokinase, and myoglobinuria-were produced in rats by a combination of relatively prolonged (2 to 4 weeks) exposure to ethanol and a brief period of food deprivation. This observation suggests that fasting may similarly trigger muscle injury during binge drinking in man. The effect of fasting is in part related to an increase in blood alcohol due to reduced alcohol clearance and in part caused by a fasting-induced potentiation of the toxic effects of high concentrations of alcohol of …

Chronic Voluntary Binge Ethanol Consumption Causes Sex-Specific Differences in Microglial Signaling Pathways and Withdrawal-associated Behaviors in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Microglia are the resident immune cells in the brain where they play essential roles in the development and maintenance of physiological functions of this organ. Aberrant activation of microglia is speculated to be involved in the pathogenesis of a variety of neurological disorders, including alcohol use disorders. Repeated binge ethanol (EtOH) consumption can have a profound impact on the function and integrity of the brain resulting in changes in behaviors such as withdrawal and reward. However, the microglial molecular and cellular pathways associated with EtOH binge consumption

A brief intervention reduces hazardous and harmful drinking in emergency department patients.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Brief interventions have been shown to reduce alcohol use and improve outcomes in hazardous and harmful drinkers, but evidence to support their use in emergency department (ED) patients is limited. The use of research assessments in studies of brief interventions may contribute to uncertainty about their effectiveness. Therefore we seek to determine (1) if an emergency practitioner-performed Brief Negotiation Interview or a Brief Negotiation Interview with a booster reduces alcohol consumption compared with standard care; and (2) the impact of research assessments on drinking

The alcohol-preferring (P) and high-alcohol-drinking (HAD) rats--animal models of alcoholism.

The objective of this article is to review the literature on the utility of using the selectively bred alcohol-preferring (P) and high-alcohol-drinking (HAD) lines of rats in studies examining high alcohol drinking in adults and adolescents, craving-like behavior, and the co-abuse of alcohol with other drugs. The P line of rats meets all of the originally proposed criteria for a suitable animal model of alcoholism. In addition, the P rat exhibits high alcohol-seeking behavior, demonstrates an alcohol deprivation effect (ADE) under relapse drinking conditions, consumes amounts of ethanol during

An Examination of predictors of prospective changes in self-reported drinker identity and changes in drinker identity as a predictor of changes in alcohol use and associated consequences.

PURPOSE: Self-reported drinker identity, the extent to which one views oneself as a drinker, is associated with alcohol consumption and related harms in young adults. The current study examined changes in self-reported drinker identity, theoretically relevant factors associated with drinker identity development, and drinker identity's association with changes in drinking and alcohol-related consequences. We hypothesized that drinker identity would increase over time; theoretically relevant factors would be significantly and positively associated with that increase, and increases in drinking id

Retatrutide improves steatohepatitis in an accelerated mouse model of diet-induced steatohepatitis with a fructose binge.

Fructose consumption contributes to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Retatrutide is a novel triple receptor agonist that improves obesity and hepatic steatosis in humans. The aims of this study were to develop a shortened and clinically relevant dietary mouse model of diet-induced steatohepatitis, and to evaluate the effects of a retatrutide intervention in this model. C57BL/6N mice were subjected to a single fructose binge (10 mg/g body wt), or a new 31-day mouse model of diet-induced steatohepatitis using a Western diet, fructose, and sucrose in the drinking water, an

Mental ill health and factors associated with men's use of intimate partner violence in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Over the years, researchers have relied on data from women victims to understand the profile on male perpetrators of intimate pa … sociated with lifetime IPV perpetration. IPV perpetration in the last 12 months was associated with binge drinking, PTSD and sexual relationship power. The pathways to IPV perpetration in the last 12 months from child abuse to recent IPV were mediated by comorbid PTSD symptoms, depression binge drinking and sexual relationship power. CONCLUSIONS: IPV perpetrati …

A systematic review of the next-day effects of heavy alcohol consumption on cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies examining the next-day cognitive effects of heavy alcohol consumption have produced mixed findings, which may reflect inconsistencies in definitions of 'hangover'. Recent consensus has defined hangover as 'mental and physical symptoms, experienced the day after a single episode of heavy drinking, starting when blood alcohol concentration (BAC) approaches zero'. In light of this, we aimed to review the literature systematically to evaluate and estimate mean effect sizes of the next-day effects of heavy alcohol consumption on cognition. METHODS: Embase, PubMed and P
