OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated the efficacy of phototherapy and 20% albumin infusion to reduce total serum bilirubin (TSB) in neonates with severe hyperbilirubinemia. The primary outcome was a reduction of TSB at the end of treatment. The secondary outcomes were the need for exchange transfusion, inpatient mortality, neurological outcomes at discharge, and development outcomes at 12-months follow-up.

Interest in the subject of umbilical cord clamping is long-standing. New evidence reveals that placental transfusion, facilitated by delayed cord clamping (DCC), reduces death and need for blood transfusions for preterm infants without evidence of harm. One hundred four cesarean hysterectomies were done on the obstetric service of Louisiana State University School of Medicine over a six-year period, for an incidence of 1/110 cesarean sections or 1/824 deliveries. We categorize the indications for both nonemergency and emergency cases and present the chief components of perioperative morbidity, with particular reference to intraoperative blood loss and postoperative infection. The mean operating time was 126 minutes, blood loss 1,200 ml, transfusion 1.65 units, and hospital stay after surgery seven days. The postoperative morbidity was 42.9%.

We propose a model for estimating the benefit of adding a test for the human immunodeficiency virus antigen (HIV-Ag) to current procedures for testing donated blood.
