Alterations in protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism in injured and septic patients.

The physiological and biochemical responses of the body following major injury or severe infection are characterized by hypermetabolism, accelerated gluconeogenesis, and the mobilization of substrates from the carcass to be utilized by visceral organs. These responses in the febrile patient are supported by an elevated cardiac output which insures perfusion of vital organs and provides additional bloodflow to the area of inflammation and/or injury. Because of the accelerated substrate flux and increased catabolism, weight loss and negative nitrogen balance are profound. Cumulative losses rapid

A New Bariatric Procedure: The Stomach Sparing Gastric Sleeve™.

A new restrictive procedure has emerged over the last decade known as the total vertical gastric plication or greater curvature plication (GCP). After our initial experience, the original technique was modified and a new standardized procedure was registered as the Stomach Sparing Gastric Sleeve™ (SSGS). The SSGS reduces the capacity of the stomach by in-folding the greater curvature with containment sutures, creating a sleeve-like stomach. Between March 2012 and August 2015 patients that met the National Institutes of Health (NIH) criteria for gastric banding underwent treatment with the SSGS

GnRH cell size and number in a teleost fish with two male reproductive morphs: sexual maturation, final sexual status and body size allometry.

Gonadotropin releasing hormone-like immunoreactive (GnRH-ir) cells in both the ganglion of the terminal nerve (TN) and the preoptic area (POA) have been implicated in the development and maintenance of reproductive behavior and physiology in teleost fishes. One marine species, the plainfin midshipman, Porichthys notatus, exhibits two sexually mature male morphs (types I and II) which differ with respect to size at sexual maturation, gonad/body weight index, reproductive tactic and vocal motor traits. Type II males become reproductively active at a smaller body size than either females or type

The effects of dietary flaxseed on the Fischer 344 rat. III. Protection against CCl(4)-induced liver injury.

The hepatotoxic effect of carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) administered by gavage at 0.25 ml CCl(4) (1:1 in olive oil) per 100 g body weight was examined 24 h later in regular chow fed (RC) and 10% flax chow fed (FC) male and female Fischer 344 rats. CCl(4)-treated RC rats were subdued, lethargic and unkempt. CCl(4)-treated FC rats were much less affected. CCl(4) treatment resulted in loss of weight in RC and FC rats. In males, the weight loss was 6.7% body mass in RC rats compared to 5.6% body mass in FC rats. In females, the weight loss was 7.5% body mass in both RC and FC rats. While CCl(4) tr

Supplementation with essential amino acids in the early stage of carbohydrate reintroduction after a very-low energy ketogenic therapy (VLEKT) improves body cell mass, muscle strength and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Although little is yet known about the long-term maintenance of very low-energy ketogenic therapy (VLEKT) effects on body composition, muscle strength and inflammation, it is plausible to assume that changes may occur, particularly during the steps following the ketogenic step, due to the loss of the protective effects of ketones and the concomitant reintroduction of carbohydrates. For this reason, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementation with 8 g per day of essential amino acids (EAAs) on these parameters. METHODS: A total of 68 women of reproductive age

Impact of chronodisruption during primate pregnancy on the maternal and newborn temperature rhythms.

Disruption of the maternal environment during pregnancy is a key contributor to offspring diseases that develop in adult life. To explore the impact of chronodisruption during pregnancy in primates, we exposed pregnant capuchin monkeys to constant light (eliminating the maternal melatonin rhythm) from the last third of gestation to term. Maternal temperature and activity circadian rhythms were assessed as well as the newborn temperature rhythm. Additionally we studied the effect of daily maternal melatonin replacement during pregnancy on these rhythms. Ten pregnant capuchin monkeys were expose

Role of the alpha1D-adrenergic receptor in the development of salt-induced hypertension.

In an attempt to elucidate whether there is a specific alpha1-adrenergic receptor (alpha1-AR) subtype involved in the genesis or maintenance of hypertension, the alpha1D-AR subtype was evaluated in a model of salt-induced hypertension. The alpha1D-AR-deficient (alpha1D-/-) and control (alpha1D+/+) mice (n=8 to 14 in each group) were submitted to subtotal nephrectomy and given 1% saline as drinking water for 35 days. Blood pressure (BP) was monitored by tail-cuff readings and confirmed at the end point by direct intraarterial BP recording. The alpha1D-/- mice had a significantly (P=0.0004) atte

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor improves blood glucose control and alleviates fasting hyperglycemia in C57BLKS-Lepr(db)/lepr(db) mice.

Systemic administration of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) decreases nonfasted blood glucose in obese, non-insulin-dependent diabetic C57BLKS-Lepr(db)/lepr(db) (db/db) mice, with a concomitant decrease in body weight. By measuring percent HbA1c in BDNF-treated and pair-fed animals, we show that the effects of BDNF on nonfasted blood glucose levels are not caused by decreased food intake but reflect a significant improvement in blood glucose control. Furthermore, once established, this effect can persist for weeks after cessation of BDNF treatment. Oral glucose tolerance tests were per

Failure of cryptorchidism to suppress fertility in a tropical rodent.

The cane mouse (Zygodontomys brevicauda) breeds year-round on the hot llanos of Venezuela, only 8 degrees above the equator. The reproductive responses of the males of this species to heat were compared with those of a temperature zone rodent, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus). When tested at different ambient temperatures, the movement of the testis in relation to the scrotum was similar in the two species, but the cane mouse's testis proved to be much more resistant to maintenance at core body temperature. In two experiments, cryptorchid cane mice experienced only a 24% and a 5% d

Higher reward value of starvation imagery in anorexia nervosa and association with the Val66Met BDNF polymorphism.

Recent studies support the idea that abnormalities of the reward system contribute to onset and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Next to cues coding for overweight, other research suggest cues triggering the proposed starvation dependence to be pivotally involved in the AN pathogenesis. We assessed the characteristics of the cognitive, emotional and physiologic response toward disease-specific pictures of female body shapes, in adult AN patients compared with healthy control (HC) women. Frequency and amplitude of skin conductance response (SCR) in 71 patients with AN and 20 HC were regist

Nutritional considerations after gastrectomy and esophagectomy for malignancy.

This article reviews various methods of assessing and managing post-gastrectomy or esophagectomy patients from a nutritional standpoint, by examining recent research focusing on assessment models, components of enteral feeding, timing of feeding, safety of enteral nutrition (EN) vs total parenteral nutrition (TPN), appetite stimulants, alternative treatments, and long-term care. Pre-, peri-, and post-operative nutrition represent a major prognostic indicator in patients undergoing a gastrectomy or esophagectomy for malignant cancer. An accurate initial nutrition assessment to determine risk, f

Effect of berberine on copper and zinc levels in chickens infected with Eimeria tenella.

Berberine, a traditional Chinese medicine, was found to exhibit anticoccidial activity. However, its mechanism is unclear. Trace metals such as copper and zinc are extremely low (less than 0.01% of the total weight of the body) but play a vital role in organisms. In the present study, we investigated the effect of berberine on copper and zinc levels in chickens infected with Eimeria tenella. Firstly, our data confirmed that infected chickens with E. tenella exhibited classic impairment on the 8th day of post infection, such as weight loss and increased feed conversion. Further study showed tha
