There is a history of copper deficiency in grazing Omani livestock and the copper status of three economically important goat breeds, Jabal Akhdar (JA), Batina (B) and Dhofari (D) were therefore compared in October/November (cool season) and June (dry season) in a penned flock given a plentiful dietary supply of copper. In the cool season, 62 lactating does (5 JA, 12 B and 33 D), their 0-5-day-old kids (17 JA, 19 B and 22 D) and 25 dry does (17 JA, 5 B and 3 D) were blood sampled. A project of QTL detection was carried out in the French Holstein, Normande, and Montbéliarde dairy cattle breeds. This granddaughter design included 1 548 artificial insemination bulls distributed in 14 sire families and evaluated after a progeny-test for 24 traits (production, milk composition, persistency, type, fertility, mastitis resistance, and milking ease). Pharmacokinetic studies indicate that clearance of propofol, an anesthetic agent, is slower in greyhounds compared with other dog breeds. Biotransformation of propofol to 2,6-diisopropyl-1,4-quinol (4-hydroxypropofol) by cytochrome P-450 in the liver is proposed as a critical initial step in the elimination of this drug in dogs. Blood samples from 50 dogs with episodic weakness and 50 clinically normal dogs, all belonging to hunting breeds, were examined for microfilariae using the modified Knott's method. Production of purebred or crossbred feeder calves for beef, especially HolsteinxJapanese-Black (HxJB) and Japanese-Black (JB), from dairy cattle using artificial insemination or embryo transfer have been used widely in Japan. However, dairy farmers feel uneasy about the effects of calf breed on the economic traits of dams. In this study, those effects were investigated in 798 Holstein heifers bearing Holstein, HxJB, JB or other breed calves. The results of the least-squares ANOVA indicated the effects of calf breed to be significant for gestation length (P<0.01) and calf birth weight (P<0.01)

Anopheline breeding habitats were studied in two different geoclimatic zones. The vectors A. fluviatilis, A annularis and A. culicifacies breed in all types of habitats. This report concerns a 5-year-old "Deutsche Rotbunte" cow, which was brought into the clinic because of fertility problems 5 months after its fourth calving. A medicine-ball-sized abscess extending from cervix and corpus uteri into the abdominal cavity was diagnosed. A presumable cause of the abscess could have been an uterine treatment carried out prior to insemination.

Ventral decompression was evaluated as a treatment for cervical disk protrusion in large- and giant-breed dogs. All of the dogs improved after ventral decompression. After a follow-up period averaging 16 months, half of the dogs were clinically normal and the other half were functional pets despite minor residual proprioceptive deficits. Ventral decompression alone appeared to be acceptable treatment for dogs not having other radiographic signs of caudal cervical spondylopathy.
