Forty percent of the 823 ultrasound-guided injections performed in our centre over a year and a half concerned the upper limb, injections involving the shoulder, for subacromial bursitis and the treatment of calcific tendinitis, being the prime indications (24%). The wrist represented 8% of the prescriptions, for treatment of tendinopathy, ganglion cysts, carpal tunnel syndrome and rhizarthrosis. Superior labral tears of the shoulder involve the biceps tendon and labrum complex which may be detached, displaced inferiorly, and interposed between the glenoid and the humeral head. We have treated ten young athletes with painful shoulders due to this lesion by arthroscopic stapling. Heterotopic ossification is a well-recognized complication of total hip arthroplasty. In a retrospective survey of 98 total hip arthroplasties in ankylosing spondylitis performed between 1970 and 1977, 39.8% showed some evidences of heterotopic ossification. Restriction of hip movements was noted in only two. Mycobacterium szulgai, a scotochromogenic mycobacterium, is a newly recognized pathogen of man and has been reported to cause pulmonary infections, olecranon bursitis and cervical adenitis. We isolated M. szulfai from granulomatous tissue removed at surgery from a young florist with the carpal tunnel syndrome. This study presents the frequency of severe and mild talalgias in unselected, consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's syndrome, and generalized osteoarthosis.
