BACKGROUND: An approach to orbital roof fractures (ORFs) and/or lower anterior table frontal sinus fractures (LATFSFs) is a challenging task. The conventional coronal approach (CCA) appears to suit multiple/complex fractures of the upper face, while periorbital transcutaneous incisions (PTIs), e.g. gull wing, open sky, butterfly, and Lynch incisions, often impair aesthetic outcomes. The aims of this paper were to provide an overview of the supramuscular upper blepharoplasty approach (SUBA) to ORFs/LATFSFs.
METHODS: Using a meta-narrative review study design, the investigators enrolled publish

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To establish the utility of anatomic optical coherence tomography (aOCT) in evaluating internal nasal valve (INV).
STUDY DESIGN: Anatomic specimen imaging study.
METHODS: Fresh-harvested human specimen heads were evaluated using both computed tomography (CT) imaging as well as using aOCT. Scans were performed at three time points: 1) After septoplasty for cartilage harvest, 2) after placement of butterfly graft (BFG), and 3) after placement of bilateral spreader grafts (SG). Imaging data were then converted into 3D models of the nasal airway. CT- and aOCT-generated mod

NADP-dependent methylene-tetrahydromethanopterin (methylene-H4MPT) dehydrogenase (MtdA) catalyzes the reversible dehydrogenation of methylene-H4MPT to form methenyl-H4MPT+ by using NADP+ as a hydride acceptor. This hydride transfer reaction is involved in the oxidative metabolism from formaldehyde to CO2 in methylotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria. Here, we report on the crystal structures of the ternary MtdA-substrate complexes from Methylorubrum extorquens AM1 obtained in open and closed forms. Their conversion is accomplished by opening/closing the active site cleft via a 15° rotation of

Pfeiffer syndrome (PS) is a rare autosomal dominant craniofacial disorder characterized by primary craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia, and extremities' abnormalities including syndactyly. The purpose of this article was to review the current knowledge regarding how PS affects the nervous system. Methodologically, we conducted a systematic review of the existing literature concerning involvement of the nervous system in PS. Multiple-suture synostosis is common, and it is the premature fusion and abnormal growth of the facial skeleton's bones that cause the characteristic facial features of th

UNLABELLED: Since 1952, myringoplasty has evolved with various surgical techniques, including overlay, underlay, sandwich, pegging, rosette, and plugging. Overlay and underlay methods are most commonly used. In 1998, Eavey introduced the cartilage and perichondrium butterfly inlay myringoplasty, designed for small to medium-sized perforation closure, offering practical advantages such as reduced surgical time and improved hearing outcomes. A one-year prospective study (September 2022 to September 2023) in a tertiary care hospital in India involved 30 patients aged 9-52 years with inactive smal

Mutations in peripherin 2 (PRPH2) have been associated with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and macular/pattern dystrophies, but the origin of this phenotypic variability is unclear. The majority of Prph2 mutations are located in the large intradiscal loop (D2), a region that contains seven cysteines involved in intra- and intermolecular disulfide bonding and protein folding. A mutation at cysteine 213, which is engaged in an intramolecular disulfide bond, leads to butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy in humans, in sharp contrast to mutations in the adjacent cysteine at position 214 which result in RP

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been reported among patients with RASopathy. Five patients have been reported: three with SHOC2 variants, one with a PTPN11 variant, and one with a KRAS variant. SHOC2 variant might represent a relatively common predisposing factor for SLE among the RASopathy genes. However, the clinical details were only reported for two patients, while information on the remaining patient appeared only in a tabular format with minimal clinical description. Here, we report a patient with a SHOC2 variant and SLE. The proband was a 28-year-old male patient with intellectua

Acute chemotherapy-induced lupus erythematosus (ALE) is rare. A few cases have been reported in the literature criminalizing capecitabine, paclitaxel and docetaxel. We report the case of a 64-year old female patient without a history of autoimmune diseases or of drug allergy followed up for invasive ductal carcinoma in the right breast immediately metastatized to the liver and to the lymph nodes. After AC60 first line chemotherapy regimen (a total of 6 cycles), she was treated with docetaxel at a dose of 100 mg/m2. After 5 cycles, she had diffuse erythematous lesions on both hands, forearms, c

Alagille syndrome (AGS) is a multisystem disorder and caused by mutations in JAG1 or NOTCH2 gene. The diagnosis of AGS is hampered by its highly variable clinical manifestations. We performed a retrospective analysis on 16 children diagnosed as having AGS in recent five years in our hospital. Cholestasis was seen in 15 patients (93.8%), heart disease in 12 (75%), characteristic facies in 7 (43.8%), and butterfly vertebrae in 7 (43.8%). Ophthalmology examination was not performed on all the patients. Further, serum biochemical parameters were compared between AGS and 16 biliary atresia (BA) pat

Objective The European League Against Rheumatism and the American College of Rheumatology jointly embarked on a new classification criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) project. Its first phase involved generation of a broad set of items potentially useful for classification of SLE. This study was undertaken to add the patient perspective to an expert Delphi approach and an early patient cohort study. Methods A national cross-sectional study was conducted. A self-report questionnaire was published in the "Schmetterling" (Butterfly), the quarterly journal of the German SLE patient ass

RATIONALE: The clinical manifestations of VACTERL association include vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, congenital heart diseases, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal dysplasia, and limb abnormalities. The association of intrahepatic anomalies and VACTERL syndrome is a rare coincidence. VACTER syndrome and intrahepatic bile drainage anomalies might be genetically related.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 12-year-old girl presented with episodic colicky abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting for several years. The individual episodes resolved spontaneously within a few days. She had a history of VACTERL syndro

Bloom syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by severe pre- and postnatal growth deficiency, immunodeficiency, an increased risk for malignancies, craniofacial dysmorphisms, and "typical" erythematous sun-sensitive skin lesions of the face. This facial rash has a butterfly-shaped distribution around the nose and is usually observed for the first time during the early years of life. Though reported as being a main feature of Bloom syndrome, there seems to be phenotypic variability regarding this facial skin rash among patients. It has been previously reported that in some in

The 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the most common microdeletion syndrome with an estimated prevalence of 1:4,000 live births. 22q11.2DS is known to have wide phenotypic variability, including orthopaedic manifestations. The purpose of this systematic review is to increase the awareness of orthopaedic manifestations associated with 22q11.2DS. This systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA Guidelines. Original epidemiological studies on the prevalence of orthopaedic manifestations within 22q11.2DS were systematically searched for in PubMed and EMBASE. The included articl

Introduction. Bloom syndrome (BS) is an inherited disorder due to mutation in BLM gene. The diagnosis of BS should be considered in patients with growth retardation of prenatal onset, a photosensitive rash in a butterfly distribution over the cheeks, and an increased risk of cancer at an early age. Clinical manifestations also include short stature, dolichocephaly, prominent ears, micrognathia, malar hypoplasia and a high-pitched voice, immunodeficiency, type II diabetes, and hypogonadism associated with male infertility and female subfertility. The aim of this report is to describe case of pa

We report a 52-year-old patient who developed B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subsequent to sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis was diagnosed 16 years ago and remained asymptomatic for 14 years after steroid treatment. She presented with new symptoms of arthralgia, photosensitivity, butterfly erythema, autoimmune antibodies (ANA, chromatin positivity) associated with progression of the known left upper lobe lesion on the chest X-ray suggesting primary autoimmune disease (systemic lupus erythematosus). As steroid treatment was not effective, we started bolus cyclophosphamide therapy after which progression
