In this investigation, the ultrastructural features of the nutritional cardiomyopathy of protein-calorie-malnourished rats were examined. Protein-calorie malnutrition was induced in young rats by feeding them a low-protein diet (4% protein) for 6 weeks. Control animals were fed a high-protein diet (16% protein). The deficient rats showed severe restriction of body-weight gain, fatty liver and hypoproteinaemia. The results of the present study clearly demonstrated that the experimentally induced protein-calorie malnutrition brings about striking morphological changes in the heart of the rat. On

Being overweight increases the risk of many metabolic disorders, but how it affects lifespan is not completely clear. Not all obese people become ill, and the exact mechanism that turns excessive fat storage into a health-threatening state remains unknown. Drosophila melanogaster has served as an excellent model for many diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and hyperglycemia-associated disorders, such as cardiomyopathy or nephropathy. Here, we review the connections between fat storage and aging in different types of fly obesity. Whereas obesity induced by high-fat or high-sugar diet is asso

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a young athlete is rare, but catastrophic. Exercise acts as a risk factor for SCD in people with cardiovascular disease. A diversity of cardiovascular disorders including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital coronary anomalies, arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, dilated cardiomyopathy, aortic rupture due to Marfan syndrome, myocarditis, valvular disease and electrical disorders (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome), as well as commotio cordis represent the common causes of SCD in young athletes. As the outcome of lethal ca

CLINICAL CASE: We report a case of a 31 year-old woman with a sudden visual loss due to a cilioretinal artery occlusion. The physical examinination showed hepatomegaly. Serum iron and ferritin and transferrin saturation were unusually high. The doppler scan of carotid arteries showed no relevant signs of atheromatous disease. Dilated cardiomiopaty was revealed in the B-scan with subendocardial calcium deposits. Genetic tests were positive for hemochromatosis.
DISCUSSION: Subendocardial calcification due to hemochromatosis could be the embolic source in our patient. This embolic ocular disease

We present a case of a 24-week gestation neonate who developed severe, reversible hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) with mid-cavity obstruction within the first 14 days of life. This occurred while the infant was receiving early low-dose hydrocortisone therapy according to the PREMILOC protocol. The patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was small and functionally restricted following concurrent medical management with paracetamol at the time of diagnosis of HCM. Genetic, endocrine, and metabolic causes were ruled out, and the infant was not receiving any other pharmacological therapy associated with

Laminopathies are a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders due to abnormalities in type A lamins and can manifest varied clinical features affecting many organs including the skeletal and cardiac muscle, adipose tissue, nervous system, cutaneous tissue, and bone. Mutations in the gene encoding lamins A and C (LMNA) cause primary laminopathies, including various types of lipodystrophies, muscular dystrophies and progeroid syndromes, mandibuloacral dysplasia, dilated cardiomyopathies, and restrictive dermopathy. The secondary laminopathies are due to mutations in ZMPSTE24 gene which encodes fo

BACKGROUND: Restrictive cardiomyopathy frequently complicates primary systemic amyloidosis (AL), yet only a small number of these patients develop large pleural effusions refractory to diuretic therapy and thoracentesis. We hypothesized that disruption of pleural function by amyloid deposits underlies persistent pleural effusions (PPEs) in patients with AL disease.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of AL patients with and without PPEs who had been referred to Boston University between 1994 and 2001. The presence of PPEs was defined by a failure to resolve the condition with thoracen

UNLABELLED: Sildenafil citrate is a potent donor of nitric oxide that has been proved to be effective for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction, but it has been contraindicated in patients with cardiovascular diseases, because of sudden death occurred to some of them. Based on the known vasodilator effect of nitrix oxide, effect that should be beneficial for some cardiomyopathies, this work was carried out in order to prove the cardiovascular effects of sildenafil citrate on: 1) heart rate, rhythm and repolarization changes on the ecg; 2) systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure; 3)

BACKGROUND: In nonischemic cardiomyopathy, mitochondrial Ca2+ handling is involved in arrhythmogenesis by modulating diastolic sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ release. Recently, it has been reported that lysosomal Ca2+ release can trigger an SR Ca2+ release. We investigated whether lysosomal Ca2+ flux through the TRPML1 (transient receptor potential mucolipin 1) channel could contribute to ischemic cardiomyopathy-related arrhythmia by causing diastolic SR Ca2+ release.
METHODS: Ischemic cardiomyopathy was induced in wild-type C57BL/6J and TRPML1 heterozygous knockdown (TRPML1±) mice by ligat

The mechanisms by which Trypanosoma cruzi causes cardiomyopathy and induces neuronal destruction are discussed in this paper. The results suggest that autoimmunity in the chronic phase is the main cause of the progressive cardiac destruction, and that autoreactivity is restricted to the CD4+ T cell compartment. During the acute phase, the neuronal and cardiac fiber destruction occurs when ruptured parasite nests release T. cruzi antigens that bind to the cell surface in the vicinity which become targets for the cellular and humoral immune response against T. cruzi. The various factors involved

Ultrafast computed tomography can substitute for angiography and provide answers to clinical and therapeutic questions. Because of superior definition of vessels and myocardium, current applications include imaging the aorta, carotids, vena cava, and other venous structures, congenital and acquired pulmonary artery abnormalities, coronary arteries, coronary artery saphenous, and internal mammary artery bypass grafts, right and left ventricles, cardiac tumors and thrombi, cardiomyopathies (ischemic, dilated, hypertrophic, and restrictive), congenital heart disease, and a variety of other acquir

Between January 1, 1985 and June 30, 1992, 37 patients (25 women and 12 men, aged 13-65 years) who had undergone a radiation treatment to the anterior chest and mediastinum, were admitted to our Institution for cardiac evaluation, which included left and right heart catheterisation in all, but 3 patients. Seventeen had signs or symptoms of ischaemic heart disease, in 8 a pericardial disease was suspected, 5 had a complete heart block, 4 were in congestive heart failure caused by valvular dysfunction, and 3 had a dilated, hypokinetic left ventricle. Diagnostic criteria in these patients were as

Obesity can result in alterations in cardiac structure and function even in the absence of systemic hypertension and underlying organic heart disease. Increased total blood volume creates a high cardiac output state that may cause ventricular dilatation and ultimately eccentric hypertrophy of the left (and possibly the right) ventricle. Eccentric left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy produces diastolic dysfunction. Systolic dysfunction may ensue due to excessive wall stress if wall thickening fails to keep pace with dilatation. This disorder is referred to as obesity cardiomyopathy. The presence o

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a progressive heart muscle disease characterized by the enlargement of the heart's left ventricle. The aetiology of the disease can be genetic and/or environmental. Mutations in LMNA, the gene encoding for the nuclear lamina protein lamin A/C, are associated with approximately 6% of DCM, however, the role of the functionally related lamin B1 remains unknown. Lamin B1 provides structural integrity to the nucleus and regulates gene expression by restricting the accessibility and transcription of lamin B1 tethered genes. Our study focuses on the lamin B1 content an

Cardioprotection includes all mechanisms that contribute to preservation of the heart by reducing or even preventing myocardial damage. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are circulating multimolecular platforms that exert a multitude of effects on cardiomyocytes and nonmyocyte cells in the myocardium leading to preservation of cardiac structure and function. Animal intervention studies applying HDL-targeted therapies have provided consistent evidence that HDLs protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury, leading to smaller myocardial infarctions, and that HDLs attenuate infarct expansion and ca

The objective of this article is to review the aetiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical course, treatment and prognosis of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). The medical literature from 1966 to March 2002 was reviewed through MEDLINE. PPCM is a rare complication in pregnancy. It is seen in late pregnancy or in the early puerperium. The aetiology of this disease remains uncertain. Many possible causes have been proposed, including myocarditis, abnormal immune response to pregnancy, maladaptive response to the hemodynamic stresses of pregnancy and prolonged tocolysis. Risk factors for PPCM in
