Electron opaque deposits were found on the alveolar capillary walls, luminia of alveolar capillaries, subendothelium and interstitium of four out of 10 Holstein dairy cattle with past shipping histories. The deposits were positive for anti-IgG bovine immunoglobulin by fluorescent antibody technique. Evidence is presented that antigen antibody complexes may play an important role in bovine respiratory diseases.

Twelve four month old calves were inoculated intratracheally with a large dose of Pasteurella hemolytica and the lungs examined 18 hours, three days and seven days later. The gross and microscopic lesions were graded in each calf. The most extensive gross lesions were present at three days and were characteristic of a fibrinous pneumonia. 1. Serum caeruloplasmin (ferroxidase I;EC 1.16.3.1) activity has been used as an indicator of copper status of cattle to survey beef herds in Northern Ireland. 2. The main survey covered some 20 000 cows on 1200 farms. 3. The results are reported in the form of a map showing area where herds of low and very-low Cu status predominate. Characteristics of 44 outbreaks of "paralytic myoglobinuria" in yearling cattle reported to veterinary investigation centres during 1974 and 1975 are described. The clinical syndrome and associated nutrition and management of cattle are discussed in the light of present knowledge of this disease with particular reference to the diagnostic and epidemiological value of plasma creatine phosphokinase and blood glutathione peroxidase activities.

The incidence of subclinical nephritis in beef cattle slaughtered at a Townsville abattoir during the period 1970-73 was 3.8 percent. A rising incidence coincided with the wet summer of 1973-74 reaching a peak of 8.2 percent thereafter in June 1974. All but 1 of 100 cases macroscopically identified as nephritis and studied histologically proved to be of interstitial type in which lymphocytic infiltration predominated. The survey was done to determine the incidence and seasonal prevalence of the gastrointestinal helminths infecting Maine dairy cattle. Approximately equal groups of calves, heifers, and cows from 13 dairy farms, managerially and geographically representative of dairying in the state, were sampled at regular 2-month intervals over the period of a year. Two 10-month-old heifers from a group of 20 young stock showed symptoms closely resembling paralytic myoglobinuria. One animal died five days after the onset of the symptoms and the other recovered slowly with selenium and vitamin E therapy. Histological examination of muscle tissue from the dead animal showed a myopathy resembling that due to vitamin E deficiency.

Current information on cytogenetics in veterinary medicine is presented as a resume for the veterinarian in cattle practice; previous reviews of the subject are recorded. The literature depicting the recognised chromosome abnormalities in cattle is breifly reviewed. It is suggested that chromosome screening already has a role to play in the economics of cattle production.
