A rare case of nasal glioma in the sphenoid sinus of an adult presenting with meningoencephalitis.

Nasal gliomas are rare embryologic development defects that commonly present shortly after birth. Very few cases have ever been reported in adults. Of those presenting in adult life, most were casual findings in patients with no symptoms. Rare localizations have been described in the nasopharynx, soft palate, orbital cave and scalp. We present an unusual case of a 56-year-old man who initially presented with meningoencephalitis and was found to have nasal glioma in the sphenoid sinus. Having discussed their embryology and histology, we conclude that MRI scanning is the preferred method of inve

An unusual pterygopalatine meningocele associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. Case report.

The authors describe an unusual meningocele of the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus and the anterior skull base in a young patient with typical stigmata of neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). This lesion was discovered during evaluation for recurrent meningitis. It represented an anterior continuation of Meckel's cave into a large cerebrospinal fluid space within the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus, extending extracranially through an enlarged superior orbital fissure into the pterygopalatine fossa adjacent to the nasal cavity. It was successfully obliterated, via an intradural middle fossa

Possible asphyxiation from carbon dioxide of a cross-country skier in eastern California: a deadly volcanic hazard.

This report describes an incident in which exceedingly high levels of carbon dioxide may have contributed to the death of a skier in eastern California. A cross-country skier was found dead inside a large, mostly covered snow cave, 1 day after he was reported missing. The autopsy report suggests that the skier died of acute pulmonary edema consistent with asphyxiation; carbon dioxide measurements inside the hole in which he was found reached 70%. This area is known for having a high carbon dioxide flux attributed to degassing of a large body of magma (molten rock) 10 to 20 km beneath the ski a

Human disease caused by an arbovirus closely related to Ilheus virus: report of five cases.

We report five cases of human disease caused by arbovirus in 5 patients from the State of São Paulo, Brazil, residing in the municipalities of Osasco, Atibaia, Guarujá, and the capital São Paulo, respectively. One of the patients resides in São Luis, capital of the State of Maranhão. The sites of infection probably were the states of Paraná and Goiás, both in cave regions, the State of Amazonas, and Rondônia in two cases. Laboratory tests for malaria were negative and 1 patient showed a positive serum reaction for leptospirosis. Serum samples from the acute and convalescent phases were tested

Coexistence of a laterally projecting C3 carotid aneurysm and a parasellar meningioma.

The coexistence of a symptomatic parasellar meningioma and an unruptured laterally projecting C3 carotid aneurysm in a 54 year old female is presented. Although the exact location of the aneurysm in relation to the distal doral ring could not be determined by preoperative neuroradiological studies, a surgical repair of the aneurysm was indicated since both the aneurysm and the meningioma could be exposed in the same operative field. All of the meningioma except for its dural attachment in the carotid cave was removed. Great care taken when drilling the anterior clinoid process as it had been c

Cultural ecology of prehistoric parasitism on the Colorado Plateau as evidenced by coprology.

The study of coprolites (desiccated feces) is recognized as a viable method for analyzing parasitism of prehistoric peoples. Eight species of helminth parasites, including nematodes, cestodes, and acanthcephalans, have been recovered from archaeological sites on the Colorado Plateau. The comparative analysis of parasitological findings illustrates the effects of changing subsistence strategies and varying life-style on prehistoric human parasitism. This comparative study is based on the analysis of coprolites recovered from one Archaic hunter-gatherer site and two Anasazi agricultural villages

Re-defining the culturing method for Pseudogymnoascus destructans incorporating viability detection.

Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) is a psychrophilic fungus whose genus is commonly found in soils of colder environments, including stable habitats such as caves and mines. The fungus causes the epizootic disease white-nose syndrome, which is responsible for the mortality of millions of bats (Chiroptera) in North America through disruption of the hibernation cycle and of gas/water exchange processes that take place across wing membranes. To understand pathogenicity and fungal ecology with the goal of intervention, cultivation of Pd is essential. However, previous research on the fungus does n…

[Theoretical basis and clinical benefits of dry salt inhalation therapy].

Dry salt inhalation (halotherapy) reproduces the microclimate of salt caves, with beneficial effect on health. Sodium chloride crystals are disrupted into very small particles (with a diameter less than 3 µm), and this powder is artificially exhaled into the air of a comfortable room (its temperature is between 20-22 °C, and the relative humidity is low). The end-concentration of the salt in the air of the room will be between 10-30 mg/m(3). The sick (or healthy) persons spend 30-60 minutes in this room, usually 10-20 times. Due to the greater osmotic pressure the inhaled salt diminishes the o…

The moisture dynamics in arid Central Asia over the last 47,000 years: Insights from the speleothem record.

Water resources are crucial for the survival and development of human societies in arid Central Asia. However, our understanding of regional hydroclimate variability and moisture dynamics remains limited. Here, we present a precisely dated, high-resolution speleothem δ18O record from caves in northern Uzbekistan that reconstructs changes in precipitation δ18O over the last 47,000 years. During the glacial interval, relatively low speleothem δ18O values align with precipitation isotope records from high northern latitudes. The close correspondence between the Uzbekistan record and Greenland ice…

The visual system of a nocturnal long-distance migrant, the Australian Bogong moth.

The Australian Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) is a small noctuid moth that undertakes annual, nocturnal migrations of up to 1000 km to escape the summer heat of its breeding grounds. The moths travel to cool alpine caves, where they enter a dormant state (aestivation) before returning to reproduce and die. During migration, their brains integrate magnetic and visual cues to guide their flight direction. While the Bogong moth's neurobiology is increasingly understood, its visual system has remained unexplored. Here, we describe the morphology, ultrastructure, optics, and visual opsins of the Bogo…

Study of coronavirus diversity in wildlife in Northern Cambodia suggests continuous circulation of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses in bats.

Since SARS-CoV-2's emergence, studies in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, have identified related coronaviruses (CoVs) in rhinolophid bats. This pilot study investigates the prevalence and diversity of CoVs in wildlife from two Cambodian provinces known for wildlife trade and environmental changes, factors favoring zoonotic spillover risk. Samples were collected from 2020 to 2022 using active (capture and swabbing of bats and rodents) and non-invasive (collection of feces from bat caves and wildlife habitats) methods. RNA was screened for CoVs using conventional pan-CoVs and real-time Sarbe…

Identification of a new alphacoronavirus (Coronaviridae: Alphacoronavirus) associated with the greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) in the south of European part of Russia.

INTRODUCTION: Bats are recognized as primary natural reservoirs for alpha- and betacoronaviruses. The interspecies transmission of bat coronaviruses to other mammalian hosts, including livestock and humans, can lead to epidemics, epizootics, and global pandemics. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe coronaviruses associated with horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus spp.) in the southern regions of the European part of Russia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from bats inhabiting caves on the southern macroslope of the Greater Caucasus (Sochi-Adler region) during 2020, 2021, and 2…
