Response to thymectomy in children with juvenile myasthenia gravis was evaluated using severity and response to therapy rating scales and objective measures of hospital, intensive care, and intubation days, prethymectomy and postthymectomy, as markers of morbidity. Records of 50 patients treated for myasthenia gravis at Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, were reviewed. Thymectomy was performed in 13 patients; average age was 10 years. BACKGROUND: Questions regarding the nature of the association between drug use and risk of homelessness remain unresolved and have important policy implications.
METHODS: To address this issue, data are presented from a 2001 community survey in Chicago, Illinois that collected information regarding histories of drug use behaviors and homeless experiences from 627 adults aged 18 to 40. BACKGROUND: In a minority of patients, primary hyperparathyroidism spontaneously remits either by autoinfarction or by hemorrhage into or around the adenoma. We describe a case of autoparathyroidectomy occurring in a 63-year-old man 9 years after three parathyroid glands were removed during a total thyroidectomy. This case is compared with 50 previously reported cases of autoparathyriodectomy, and a meta-analysis is performed.

With data from multidisciplinary investigations of child pedestrian injuries in Chicago, a new and simpler four-category taxonomy is presented based on the process that led to the collision. Two dimensions are recognized: the visibility of the child and/or the vehicle immediately prior to the event and the rapidity of action, either movement or change in direction, of the victim or the vehicle. Sixteen asymptomatic volunteers had their right lower puncta occluded with a Freeman silicone plug. They then went about their normal daily activities for approximately 1 week under the stress of a cold Chicago winter. Of the 16 eyes that were plugged, 4 had epiphora. The episodes were of short duration and did not have any effect on the subjects' daily activities. Although the hypothesis that intrauterine device (IUD) use might promote cervical cancer has been considered since the introduction of IUDs in the early 1900s, previous studies are inconclusive. We analyzed 101 cases of carcinoid tumor in patients treated at the University of Chicago hospitals between 1942 and 1979. Tumors occurred most commonly in the rectum (29%) and ileum (28%). Only 12% were appendiceal. More than 60% were less than 1 cm, and 43% were confined to the submucosa. These factors led to favorable prognoses. Twenty-three percent of the tumors were greater than 2 cm in diameter; 70% of them had metastasized, compared with only 6% of lesions less than 1 cm. Of 107 patients with diffuse histiocytic lymphoma (DHL) seen at the University of Chicago, 14 (13%) were classified as having moderate to marked sclerosis. Three of the 14 (21%) had predominantly retroperitoneal masses. In summer 2022, a case of mpox was confirmed in a resident at the Cook County Jail (CCJ) in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
