Molecular detection of Histoplasma capsulatum in the lung of a free-ranging common noctule (Nyctalus noctula) from France using the Hcp100 gene.

Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungus that is widely distributed in the tropical or subtropical areas of the world and infects several mammalian hosts, mainly bats. Infective propagules grow in bat and bird droppings. A specific molecular marker, a highly sensitive fragment of a co-activator protein-coding gene (Hcp100), was used to detect H. capsulatum in lung samples of wild and captive bats from France using a nested polymerase chain reaction. To determine whether bats in France are potential carriers of H. capsulatum, 83 bats were sampled from two regions in France. Sixty-one specim

[Histoplasmosis - an unusual African souvenir].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 24-year-old woman (student of biology) was part of a study group in Uganda. She developed fever and headache, which was empirically treated as malaria. After she had returned to Switzerland, a chest x-ray showed bilateral miliary nodular infiltrates. In assumption of an atypical pneumonia, she was treated with levofloxacin, although without success. On admission, she was in a bad general condition and was markedly dyspneic. Rales were heard over both lungs. INVESTIGATIONS AND DIAGNOSIS: CRP, liver enzymes and LDH were elevated. A lung function test revealed a

Histoplasmosis outbreak among day camp attendees--Nebraska, June 2012.

On June 21, 2012, the Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) in Omaha, Nebraska, was notified of an acute respiratory illness cluster among 32 counselors at city-sponsored day camps. Laboratory-confirmed histoplasmosis was diagnosed in one camp counselor. DCHD and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS) investigated the extent and source of the outbreak to prevent further infections.

A simple spatiotemporal rabies model for skunk and bat interaction in northeast Texas.

We formulate a simple partial differential equation model in an effort to qualitatively reproduce the spread dynamics and spatial pattern of rabies in northeast Texas with overlapping reservoir species (skunks and bats). Most existing models ignore reservoir species or model them with patchy models by ordinary differential equations. In our model, we incorporate interspecies rabies infection in addition to rabid population random movement. We apply this model to the confirmed case data from northeast Texas with most parameter values obtained or computed from the literature. Results of simulati

Coccidioides posadasii infection in bats, Brazil.

To analyze the eco-epidemiologic aspects of Histoplasma capsulatum in Brazil, we tested 83 bats for this fungus. Although H. capsulatum was not isolated, Coccidioides posadasii was recovered from Carollia perspicillata bat lungs. Immunologic studies detected coccidioidal antibodies and antigens in Glossophaga soricina and Desmodus rotundus bats.

Rabies prevalence in migratory tree-bats in Alberta and the influence of roosting ecology and sampling method on reported prevalence of rabies in bats.

The migratory tree-roosting hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) and silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) are among the bat species with the highest reported prevalence of rabies in North America. However, bats submitted for rabies testing typically have been those that have come in contact with humans or pets. Given the roosting ecology of L. cinereus and L. noctivagans, contact with healthy individuals of these species is expected to be rare, with a bias in contact and submission of infected individuals and thus an overestimation of rabies prevalence. We tested 121 L. cinereus and 96 L. no

Active surveillance of bat rabies in France: a 5-year study (2004-2009).

Active surveillance of bats in France started in 2004 with an analysis of 18 of the 45 bat species reported in Europe. Rabies antibodies were detected in six indigenous species, mainly in Eptesicus serotinus and Myotis myotis, suggesting previous contact with the EBLV-1 rabies virus. Nineteen of the 177 tested bats were shown serologically positive in seven sites, particularly in central and south-western France. Neither infectious viral particles nor viral genomes were detected in 173 and 308 tested oral swabs, respectively. The presence of neutralising antibodies in female bats (18.6%) was s

Reassessing the risk from rabies: a continuing threat to the UK?

The threat of re-introduction of rabies virus into the United Kingdom exists on several levels. Firstly, importation of live animals into the UK continues to challenge the regulations in place to ensure that the virus does not enter the country. Secondly, the indigenous bat population is known to carry a virus genetically related to rabies virus, the European bat lyssavirus (EBLV). Molecular characterization of this virus has further characterized it as being EBLV type 2, genetically distinct from a similar virus that has caused several human deaths across Europe. Finally, a lack of awareness

Variability of the approach phase of landing echolocating Greater Mouse-eared bats.

The approach phase of landing vespertilionid bats ends with a group of calls, which either consists of buzz I alone or buzz I and buzz II. To understand the possible role of buzz II, we trained Myotis myotis to land on a vertical grid, and compared the flight and echolocation behavior during approach in trials with and without buzz II. During the approach, we did not find any differences in the echolocation behavior until the end of buzz I which indicated whether buzz II was emitted or not. However, bats flying from the periphery of the flight channel, such that they had to make a small turn a

Identification of European bat lyssavirus isolates with short genomic insertions.

Molecular typing has consistently identified European bat lyssaviruses from Germany as EBLV type 1a (EBLV-1a). This report confirms the presence of the closely related EBLV-1b in southern Germany, a group previously reported from The Netherlands, France and Spain. Furthermore, two of three German EBLV-1b isolates contain a 6 base pair insertion within the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of the nucleoprotein gene. This feature was shared with a third EBLV-1b isolate from a region of France adjacent to the French-German border. Further investigation revealed a two base pair insertion in a single is

Bat-associated rabies virus in Skunks.

Rabies was undetected in terrestrial wildlife of northern Arizona until 2001, when rabies was diagnosed in 19 rabid skunks in Flagstaff. Laboratory analyses showed causative rabies viruses associated with bats, which indicated cross-species transmission of unprecedented magnitude. Public health infrastructure must be maintained to address emerging zoonotic diseases.

[A public health intervention at the time of a case of rabies in Quebec].

BACKGROUND: In the fall of 2000, a nine-year-old child living in Montreal (Québec) died of rabies encephalitis. Cases of human rabies had not been reported in Canada for 15 years. The molecular characterization of viral nucleic acid implicated the Ln/Ps variant associated with the silver-haired bat and the eastern pipistrelle. This article describes and analyzes the intervention carried out by public health. INTERVENTION AND DISCUSSION: The investigation revealed that contact with the bat must have occurred while the child was sleeping. Following the search for close contacts of the reference

Food chain aspects of chlordane poisoning in birds and bats.

We have observed recurring chlordane poisonings of large numbers of common grackles (Quiscalus quiscula), European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), and American robins (Turdus migratorius) at suburban roosts in New Jersey during the month of July. This paper describes aspects of the food chain uptake of chlordane that account for the periodicity of these poisonings. Chlordane concentrations ranged from < 0.02 to 20.3 microg/g wet weight in 11 soil samples collected from residential lawns and a golf course near one roost. Of the 10 species of insects and soil invertebrates collected from the area,

The morphology of the intestine of the entomophagous longfingered bat, Miniopterus inflatus: mucosal topography and possible landmarks.

The intestinal tract of the longfingered bat, Miniopterus inflatus, was studied macroscopically, with the light microscope and the scanning electron microscope. The intestine comprised a small mass of coiled loops contained in a rather small abdominal cavity. Macroscopically, the stomach was of the simple type and the intestine was a short convoluted tube whose diameter decreased craniocaudally. A caecum, an appendix and a colon were absent and the only portion of the large intestine observed was a short rectum grossly identifiable only on the account of its greater diameter. Microscopically,

Antemortem diagnosis of human rabies.

Human rabies is a rare but fatal disease. In the United States, the majority of people infected with rabies contract the disease by being bitten by a wild animal, most commonly bats. Because rabies is so rarely seen, it is often not diagnosed until after death, at which time exposed health care workers will require rabies prophylaxis. We describe a case for which the diagnosis was made before death. The prompt consideration of this diagnosis allowed early isolation of the patient and prevented unnecessary risk to health care workers.

Fine structural characteristics of the zone of contact between the lower infundibular stem and the pituitary pars distalis in the little brown bat, Myotis lucifugus.

The purpose of this study was to examine the morphological characteristics of the pituitary gland in the little brown bat that might influence mechanisms of hypothalamic releasing hormone transport. Paraffin sections were prepared from whole crania to examine in situ the orientations of the three parts of the adenohypophysis (pars distalis, pars intermedia, and pars tuberalis) relative to the components of the neurohypophysis (pars nervosa and infundibular stem) and the basal hypothalamus. Of particular interest was the observation that the axis of the infundibular stem is directed posteriorly

Outbreak of human rabies in the Peruvian jungle.

Transmission of rabies to man by vampire bats has been known for 60 years but there have been few reports of the features of rabies transmitted in this way. These aspects of the disease were investigated during an outbreak in Peru in early 1990. Between Jan 1 and April 30, 1990, 29 (5%) of 636 residents of the two rural communities in the Amazon Jungle in Peru acquired an illness characterised by hydrophobia, fever, and headache and died shortly thereafter. A census in one of the two towns revealed that the proportion affected was significantly higher for 5-14 year olds (17%) than for other ag

Projections from the cochlear nuclei in the mustache bat, Pteronotus parnellii.

Ascending projections of the cochlear nuclei in the mustache bat were analyzed by anterograde transport of [3H]-leucine and by retrograde transport of HRP. We were particularly interested in pathways to two parts of the system: (1) to the medial superior olive, because this nucleus is missing in most echolocating bats, but appears to be present in the mustache bat, and (2) to the intermediate and ventral nuclei of the lateral lemniscus, because these nuclei are hypertrophied and highly differentiated in all echolocating bats that we have examined. The results show a highly systematic projectio
