We used RT-PCR to measure relative differences in cannabinoid receptor (CB) mRNAs in the rat eye, comparing CB1 or CB2 transcripts to that of the normalizing reference gene beta2 microglobulin (beta2m). Significantly higher levels of CB1 mRNA levels were found in the ciliary body (0.84+/-0.05% of beta2m) than in the iris, (0.34+/-0.04% of beta2m), retina (0.07+/-0.005% of beta2m) and choroid (0.06+/-0.005% of beta2m). Five ciliary body membrane proteins were labeled when incubated with (adenylate-32P)NAD. Nitric oxide donors stimulated the labeling of 64, 40, and 29-30 kDa proteins and inhibited that of 58 and 56 kDa proteins. The greatest influence of nitric oxide was on the 40 kDa protein: a 17-fold stimulation. Visual acuity, the character of fixation, the angle of deviation, refraction, monocular determination of accommodation and blood supply of the ciliary body have been studied in 50 schoolchildren (100 eyes) with convergent strabismus and amblyopia of various degree. Children with amblyopia of high and moderate degrees have shown a sharp fall or absolute absence of the positive part of relative accommodation and reduced blood supply of the ciliary body. Between the mentioned indices and degree of amblyopia there exists a positive connexion.

Three hundred twenty-three eyes enucleated because of intraocular tumor were studied. The microscopic features were compared with survival data from 6 to 21 years after surgery, thus permitting the prognostic value of certain findings to be determined. A 54-year-old woman who presented with photopsia was found to have elevated intraocular pressure in both eyes and optic disc cupping in the right eye. Angle infiltration was noted on gonioscopy. She was previously been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. This case report describes a rare case of glaucoma as a complication of ciliary body and iris metastases secondary to invasive ductal breast cancer.

A rare complication of extracapsular cataract extraction is hypotony due to capsular shrinkage, with consequent ciliary body detachment.
