Back-to-Back Climate shocks and the mental health crisis: A Texas-sized surge in depression and anxiety ER visits.

Climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of climate-related disasters, posing significant challenges to public mental health. This study explores the relationship between successive climate events and emergency department (ED) visits for depression and anxiety in the Greater Houston area from 2019 to 2023. Combining monthly data from the Texas Syndromic Surveillance System, the National Weather Service, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, we conducted a time-series analysis to assess the impact of successive weather events on ED visits for anxiety and depressio

Scrub typhus in the era of climate change: exploring lagged and cumulative effects of meteorological factors in the Republic of Korea, 2001-2024, a nationwide time-series study.

OBJECTIVES: Scrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, is a climate-sensitive vector-borne disease with high incidence in the Republic of Korea. This study examined long-term epidemiological trends and changing meteorological influences in the context of climate change. METHODS: A retrospective time-series study was conducted using national surveillance data on 149,289 scrub typhus cases (2001-2024) across 4 surveillance phases. Temporal trends in age-standardized incidence rates were evaluated using Joinpoint regression. Associations between monthly meteorological variables and incidenc

Diversity in reservoir surface morphology and climate limits ability to compare and upscale estimates of greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from reservoirs are influenced by many factors, including the reservoir's morphology, watershed, and local climate. Failure to account for diversity in waterbody characteristics contributes to uncertainties in estimates of total waterbody GHG emissions and limits the ability to extrapolate patterns from one set of reservoirs to another. Hydropower reservoirs are of particular interest given recent studies that show variable - and sometimes very high - measurements and estimates of emissions. This study uses characteristics describing reservoir surface morphology

Detecting local adaptation under weak genetic structure in an endemic damselfly: an integrative eco-evolutionary approach.

BACKGROUND: Insects comprise one of Earth's most diverse animal groups, but the adaptive capacity of most species, especially those with weak genetic structure, remains understudied. Psolodesmus mandarinus is an endemic damselfly in Taiwan, where its populations show latitudinal variation in wing traits despite limited genetic differentiation in mitochondrial and ribosomal sequences. We hypothesised that weak genome-wide structure may obscure the signals of local adaptation driven by environmental variation. To test this, we integrated genome-wide SNPs, phenotypic measurements, environmental a

Increasing risk of vapor pressure deficit exceeding critical thresholds for tree growth.

With global warming, rising atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) has emerged as a critical driver of vegetation productivity and the terrestrial carbon sink. Yet, the thresholds beyond which VPD constrains tree growth remain poorly quantified. Using 2,953 tree-ring sites and combining generalized additive models with threshold regression models, we demonstrate that growth-related VPD thresholds are widespread. Approximately 63% of the studied species groups exhibited identifiable thresholds, which were generally lower in cool, humid regions and higher in warm, dry environments. For the sam

Temporal decoupling between photosynthetic carbon assimilation and wood formation in a temperate forest: implications for source-sink dynamics.

Quantifying temporal lags between photosynthesis and wood formation is essential for predicting forest carbon allocation under climate change, yet their magnitude and drivers remain poorly resolved across coexisting species. Here, we combined 4 yr of weekly microcore observations of wood formation with modeled daily photosynthetic production for 12 dominant tree species in a mixed broadleaf-Korean pine forest in Northeast China. Cross-correlation analysis was used to quantify the temporal lags between wood formation and photosynthesis at both species and stand levels. Wood formation lagged beh

Rumen fluke (Calicophoron daubneyi) on Welsh farms: prevalence, risk factors and observations on co-infection with Fasciola hepatica.

Reports of Calicophoron daubneyi infecting livestock in Europe have increased substantially over the past decade; however, there has not been an estimate of its farm level prevalence and associated risk factors in the UK. Here, the prevalence of C. daubneyi across 100 participating Welsh farms was recorded, with climate, environmental and management factors attained for each farm and used to create logistic regression models explaining its prevalence. Sixty-one per cent of farms studied were positive for C. daubneyi, with herd-level prevalence for cattle (59%) significantly higher compared wit

Dynamic-chemical coupling of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere region.

The importance of the interaction between chemistry and dynamics in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere for chemical species like ozone is investigated using two chemistry-climate models and a Lagrangian trajectory model. Air parcels from the upper troposphere, i.e. regions of lightning and aircraft emissions, are able to be transported into the lowermost stratosphere (LMS). Trajectory calculations suggest that the main transport pathway runs via the inter tropical convergence zone, across the tropical tropopause and then to higher latitudes, i.e. into the LMS. NOx from aircraft emiss…

The influence of climate change on bird distribution patterns and conservation priorities.

Anthropogenic climate change is worsening its effects on human societies, economies, natural systems, and biological diversity through altered precipitation patterns and increased global temperatures. Tropical islands and areas with high endemism are especially vulnerable, because rising temperatures and changing rainfall are expected to make vast regions unsuitable for many of their narrow-ranged, endemic species potentially causing the disappearance of bird communities. By combining ecological niche models (ENMs) with community-ecology measures of biodiversity, we assess how the geographic d

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of dengue incidence at district level across major climatic zones in India.

Over the past decade, dengue incidence has been steadily increasing across the different climatic zones of India. The role of climatic variability in the spatial and temporal distribution of dengue at the district level across India is to be determined. District-level dengue incidence data from 2010 to 2022 were obtained from the National Centre for Vector-Borne Disease Control. Indian districts were categorized into eleven climatic zones based on the Köppen-Geiger climate classification scheme and subsequently grouped into three significant climatic zones (tropical, temperate and arid). Tempo

Global warming induced spread of the highest human fascioliasis hyperendemic area.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is driving the occurrence of several infectious diseases. Within a One Health action to complement the ongoing preventive chemotherapy initiative against human fascioliasis in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano hyperendemic area, field surveys showed a geographical expansion of its lymnaeid snail vector. To assess whether climate change underlies this spread of the infection risk area, an in-depth analysis of the long-term evolution of climatic factors relevant for Fasciola hepatica development was imperative. METHODS: We used monthly climatic data covering at least a

Climatic requirements of the eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, with a consideration of its possible geographic range up to 2090.

The eastern paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, is an ectoparasite of medical and veterinary importance in Australia. The feeding of I. holocyclus is associated with an ascending flaccid paralysis which kills many dogs and cats each year, with the development of mammalian meat allergy in some humans, and with the transmission of Rickettsia australis (Australian scrub typhus) to humans. Although I. holocyclus has been well studied, it is still not known exactly why this tick cannot establish outside of its present geographic distribution. Here, we aim to account for the presence as well as the a

Grey and green: can the two walk together? Challenges to climate planning for an aging population: perspectives of Israeli policy stakeholders and planners.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Climate change disproportionately affects older adults, yet age-friendly planning and climate adaptation remain disconnected in municipal implementation. This study examines barriers to integrating Age-Friendly Plans and Climate Adaptation Plans in Israeli municipalities, where both frameworks were recently introduced nationwide. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 39 policy stakeholders, planners, municipal administrators, and academics involved in age-friendly or climate adaptation initiatives. Interview transcripts were analy

Climate change and its potential for altering the phenology and ecology of some common and widespread arthropod parasites in New Zealand.

Climate change, in the form of global warming, is a current concern and because farming systems, livestock parasites and their hosts are influenced by the weather, it is possible to predict (albeit with some uncertainty) changes in these in some broadly descriptive fashion, as climate changes. This review examines the on- and off-host responses to potential changes in temperature and humidity of a representative selection of arthropod ectoparasites (sheep chewing louse, Bovicola ovis; sheep blowflies, Lucilla spp., Calliphora stygia, and Chrysomya rufifacies; cattle tick, Haemaphysalis longico

Continent-Wide Climatic Variation Drives Local Adaptation in North American White Clover.

Climate-associated clines in adaptive polymorphisms are commonly cited as evidence of local adaptation within species. However, the contribution of the clinally varying trait to overall fitness is often unknown. To address this question, we examined survival, vegetative growth, and reproductive output in a central US common garden experiment using 161 genotypes of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) originating from 15 locations across North America. White clover is polymorphic for cyanogenesis (hydrogen cyanide release upon tissue damage), a chemical defense against generalist herbivores, and

Farmers' Options to Address Water Scarcity in a Changing Climate: Case Studies from two Basins in Mediterranean Chile.

Irrigated agriculture in Mediterranean areas faces tremendous challenges because of its exposure to hydroclimatic variability, increasing competition for water from different sectors, and the possibility of a climatic change. In this context, efficient management of water resources emerges as a critical issue. This requires the adoption of technological innovations, investment in infrastructure, adequate institutional arrangements, and informed decision makers. To understand farmers' perceptions and their implementation of climate change adaptation strategies with regards to water management,

Trajectories of adolescent hostile-aggressive behavior and family climate: Longitudinal implications for young adult romantic relationship competence.

The formation and maintenance of young adult romantic relationships that are free from violence and are characterized by love, connection, and effective problem-solving have important implications for later well-being and family functioning. In this study, we examined adolescent hostile-aggressive behavior (HAB) and family relationship quality as key individual and family level factors that may forecast later romantic relationship functioning. Guided by a family systems framework, we evaluated the reciprocal influences of adolescent hostility and family climate, to provide a more comprehensive

Stochastic cloud fluctuations drive Arctic winter radiative bistability.

In Arctic winter, the boundary layer occupies two preferred radiative states, a cold, clear state and a heat-trapping, cloudy state, that strongly regulate surface energy loss over sea ice. Yet, reanalyses and climate models are often biased toward a single intermediate state. Using a stochastic differential equation framework applied to 27 years of high-resolution observations, we show that the observed bistability is not sustained by multiple deterministic equilibria: The mean restoring tendency is effectively single-well, while background meteorology alone cannot explain rapid transitions. …
