Evaluation of social cognition, autistic traits, and dysmorphology in comorbid specific learning disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Research on areas such as social cognition, autistic traits, and minor physical anomalies in comorbid Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is limited. In this study, we compared these areas in children aged between 8 and 14 with comorbid SLD and ADHD and their typically developed peers. Emotion recognition and social cognition were evaluated by Faces Test, Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, Comprehension Test, and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire and Social Responsiveness Scale were used for screen

Associations Between Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Behavioral and Cognitive Functions in Children With and Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related problems are highly prevalent comorbidities in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the associations between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and behavioral and cognitive functions in children with and without ADHD. METHODS: A total of 341 children were included (ADHD group: 155, control group: 186; age: 6-10 years). The participants' sleep-related symptoms were assessed using a parent-rated questionnaire, and they were categorized into low- and high-risk SDB groups based on their scores. Behavioral symptoms wer

Sluggish cognitive tempo is associated with autistic traits and anxiety disorder symptoms in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) with autistic traits (ATs) and anxiety disorder symptoms among children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: A total of 195 children with a DSM-5 diagnosis of ADHD were included. The Barkley Sluggish Cognitive Tempo Scale (BSCTS) was used to measure SCT symptoms. Other study measures included the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Disorders (SCARED), Turgay DSM-IV Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale (T-DSM-IV-S), and Conners' Teacher Rating Scale (CTRS-

Feasibility of an Intensive, Disorder-Specific, Group-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Intervention for Adolescents with Social Anxiety Disorder.

This study examined the preliminary acceptability and efficacy of an intensive, group-based, disorder-specific cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) intervention for adolescents with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Fourteen Australian adolescents with SAD (78.6% female, M age = 13.93 years) and their parents completed the program plus measures of treatment satisfaction, and provided feedback. Clinical interviews and surveys were administered pre-treatment, post-treatment, and at 6-month follow-up to determine diagnostic status and assess related variables. Post-treatment satisfaction scores were

Frontal cortex dysfunction as a target for remediation in opiate use disorder: Role in cognitive dysfunction and disordered reward systems.

In this chapter, we develop a model of μ- and δ-opioid receptor (OR) effects on cellular activity in the corticostriatal circuit after reviewing clinical data on cognitive and mood impairments in opioid substance use disorder (OUD), we use this model to derive information on the relevance of opioid actions in this circuit for cognition and reward. We find that the cognitive impairments and rewarding properties of acute μ-OR activation can reasonably explained by pharmacological actions in the corticostriatal circuit. However, long-term cognitive impairments and mood dysfunction observed in OUD

Changes in perceived centrality of anxious events following cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to explore the association between reductions in symptoms of psychopathology and perceived centrality of negative autobiographical memories in participants with social anxiety disorder (SAD) or panic disorder (PD). METHODS: Thirty-nine individuals with SAD or PD recalled and rated four negative autobiographical memories before and after ten sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) over a three-month period. Twenty-eight healthy controls did the same before and after a three-month period. RESULTS: As hypothesized, results sh

Dissemination of exposure in the treatment of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder among German cognitive behavioural therapists.

The efficacy of exposure is beyond doubt, which is reflected in guidelines recommending its application in the treatment of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research suggests exposure to be underutilized in clinical practice in the United States and Europe. A systematic investigation of the dissemination of exposure in Germany is lacking. The present study examined the dissemination and application frequency of exposure among German cognitive behavioural therapists working in routine care. In an online-based survey, 331 psychotherapists provided information on treat

Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Comorbid Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Review of the Research.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are highly comorbid, precipitating an urgent need to identify evidence-based practices that might be used to address this comorbidity exclusively. The aim of this study was to conduct a review of intervention research and clinical reports to examine the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with individuals who have comorbid ASD and OCD. Based on the pre-determined review inclusion criteria, 11 studies were included in the review: three randomized control trials (RCT), one case controlled study, two single subject expe

Virtual Reality Cognitive Remediation in Older Adults with Bipolar Disorder: The Effects on Cognitive Performance and Depression in a Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia, depression, and cardiovascular disease are major public health concerns for older adults, requiring early intervention. This study investigates whether a virtual reality cognitive remediation program (VR-CR) can improve cognitive function and depressive symptoms in older adults, and determines the necessary sample size for future studies. Integrated VR and CR interventions have shown promising outcomes in older adults with neurodegenerative and mental health disorders. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial involves adults aged 58-75 years wi

Bridging cognitive screening tests in neurologic disorders: A crosswalk between the short Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Mini-Mental State Examination.

INTRODUCTION: To provide a crosswalk between the recently proposed short Montreal Cognitive Assessment (s-MoCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) within a clinical cohort. METHODS: A total of 791 participants, with and without neurologic conditions, received both the MMSE and the MoCA at the same visit. s-MoCA scores were calculated and equipercentile equating was used to create a crosswalk between the s-MoCA and MMSE. RESULTS: As expected, s-MoCA scores were highly correlated (Pearson r = 0.82, P < .001) with MMSE scores. s-MoCA scores correctly classified 85% of healthy older adults

Assessment of Dysfunctional Cognitions in Binge-Eating Disorder: Factor Structure and Validity of the Mizes Anorectic Cognitions Questionnaire-Revised (MAC-R).

Background: Dysfunctional cognitions regarding weight and shape and their implications for self-esteem are considered core features of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. However, they have also been associated with the severity of binge eating disorder (BED). Therefore, they should be screened with appropriate instruments to tailor treatment to individual patient needs. The Mizes Anorectic Cognitions-Revised (MAC-R) is a self-report questionnaire that lists dysfunctional cognitions related to three hypothesized core beliefs typical of the psychopathology of eating disorders: weight and eati

A unified general cognitive factor explains impairment across schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD and substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that cognitive impairment cuts across traditional psychiatric diagnoses and may reflect a shared underlying cognitive liability. We examined whether a general cognitive factor (gFc) accounts for transdiagnostic deficits across schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and substance use disorder (SUD). METHODS: A total of 797 individuals [544 affected and 253 healthy controls (HC)] completed a standardized cognitive battery. Bifactor confirmatory factor analysis was used to derive general cognitive factor (gFc) and dom

Cognitive behavioral group therapy for bipolar disorder with comorbid anxiety disorder: a mixed-methods feasibility pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Half of all individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) are estimated to have or develop a comorbid anxiety disorder (AD). Comorbid AD is associated with decreased treatment response and a more severe illness trajectory. However, as only a few studies have targeted comorbid anxiety as a treatment goal in BD, this mixed-methods study aimed to assess the feasibility and preliminary effect of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based group course for comorbid ADs in people with BD. METHODS: Nine individuals with BD and comorbid AD completed a CBT group course for anxiety consisting of 15

Do schema modes predict outcome of cognitive behavioural therapy in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders?

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the psychological treatment of choice for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or an anxiety disorder. However, a substantial group (30-40%) does not profit sufficiently. Predictors of outcome inform us about how to adapt interventions for this group. Specifically, schema modes might affect CBT outcome; yet, research into the relation between schema modes and CBT outcome for anxiety disorders and OCD is very limited. In this study, it was investigated whether adaptive and maladaptive schema modes predict CBT outcome controlling fo

Comparison of cognitive ability and its distribution between men with autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Clarification of the strengths and weaknesses of cognitive ability is essential to our understanding of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, whether individuals with these conditions exhibit distinct patterns of cognitive ability remains unclear. To address this point, we aimed to compare the cognitive profiles of patients with autism spectrum disorder with those of patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder by placing special emphasis on the distribution of cognitive function within each group. METHODS:

The Impact of Childhood Attention Hyperactivity Disorder on Cognitive Function in Adult Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Patients: A Comprehensive Study.

Studies evaluating cognitive functions in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have yielded inconsistent results in various cognitive domains. One key reason for contradictory findings is the frequent occurrence of comorbid psychiatric disorders in OCD. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), especially in childhood, is one of the most common comorbidities in OCD. The aim of the current study was to identify potential differences in cognitive functions caused by childhood ADHD in adult OCD patients while minimizing the effects of symptoms that frequently accompany OCD, su
