BACKGROUND: Percutaneous gastric feeding tubes are becoming increasingly more common to provide nutrition in debilitated patients, while they decrease the risk of aspiration associated with nasogastric tubes.
METHODS: We reviewed infectious complications of 372 feeding gastrostomy tubes placed in a small urban community hospital over a recent period.

This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of long-term urinary catheters and explores patients' attitudes to catheterisation. The author argues that, with careful selection of equipment, long-term catheterisation can be acceptable to patients and a useful method of management for people whose lives are severely restricted by incontinence.

Neurocysticercosis cases were identified in 1991 in an Orthodox Jewish community. Transmission was linked to tapeworm-infected immigrant housekeepers from countries where Taenia solium is endemic. To evaluate the extent of and risks for locally acquired cysticercosis, a seroprevalence survey was conducted in 9% of the households in this community. Cysticercosis antibodies were detected in 23 (1.3%) of 1,789 persons from 612 families. A child with Möbius syndrome (facial diplegia) was studied during affective interplay with both parents at six and 10 months, then re-assessed with the Ainsworth Strange Situation at 14 months. The child demonstrated normal cognitive development, but insecure-resistant attachment. This paper establishes a conceptual and operational basis for development of community prevention programs to reduce alcohol-related accidents.
