BACKGROUND: Each year 182,000 babies are stillborn in Nigeria, representing nearly 10% of the annual global stillbirth burden. Imo state in south-eastern Nigeria has one of the highest levels of maternal health service access in Nigeria, yet this has not translated into good pregnancy outcomes. Many stillbirth prevention initiatives in Nigeria focus on maternal health education but empirical evidence suggests that sociocultural factors impact healthcare choices and outcomes. This study aims to explore women's and health workers' perspectives of the sociocultural barriers to following medical a

BACKGROUND: In 2012, the Nigerian government launched performance-based financing (PBF) in three districts providing financial incentives to health workers based on the quantity and quality of service provision. They were given autonomy to use funds for operational costs and performance bonuses. This study aims to understand changes in perceived motivation among health workers with the introduction of PBF in Wamba district, Nigeria.
METHODS: The study used a qualitative research design to compare perceptions of health workers in facilities receiving PBF payments in the pilot district of Wamba

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based intervention project aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality in a poor urban district in the city of Natal, in the Northeast of Brazil.
METHODS: The intervention, called the ProNatal project, introduced a program of integrated community health care to a geographically defined population. The interventions included the establishment of antenatal clinics at the district's health centers, the opening of the maternity facilities at the polyclinic for low-risk deliveries, the introduction of a family planning clinic and a breast

Primary eye care in rural sub-Saharan Africa is reviewed. In the context of eye care delivered by village health workers (VHW's) living in and supported by the community, such a system of health care does not exist in Africa today. There are no VHW's, and primary health care is currently a matter of experimentation and conjecture only. However, most basic eye care is rendered by non-ophthalmologists; such care consists of screening, treatment of infections and inflammations, and in some cases, cataract surgery. Lower levels of non-ophthalmic general health workers are being tasked to promote m

INTRODUCTION: inspite of the demonstrable evidence of the preventive and protective ability of vaccines to reduce the outbreak of vaccine-preventable diseases, there are still some significant disease outbreaks recorded in our communities. In some settings, these outbreaks have been linked with poor vaccine management. Therefore, this study was conducted to compare the cold chain practices in Oyo State, Nigeria.
METHODS: we conducted a cross-sectional survey among health workers in the local government areas of Oyo State between October and November 2019. Using purposive sampling, we recruite

Tuberculosis (TB) is a complex health problem that requires an integrated approach that considers economic, environmental, and social factors to reduce the global burden of TB. To develop a comprehensive strategy for TB eradication, addressing the social determinants of TB is crucial. This study aimed to explore the experiences of healthcare workers and patients regarding the social determinants of health in the context of TB in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Purposive sampling was employed to select 20 healthcare workers and 24 individuals with TB. Key informant interviews were conducted with healthc

Maternal and neonatal health remains a major challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with high mortality rates also observed in Benin. This policy brief summarizes findings from two hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC) projects implemented in Benin between 2023 and 2025 and translates them into prioritized policy recommendations. Findings are drawn from a baseline survey of 169 healthcare workers across six hospitals, focus group discussions with 42 community health workers (CHW), structured interviews and stakeholder consultations, and outcomes of two structured training programs. Thro…

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) has been introduced in many sub-Saharan African countries, but limited political interest and insufficient funding have resulted in many CSE initiatives being dependent on donor funding or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) supporting its implementation. This has created concerns about the sustainability of the programmes. The objective of this study was to explore factors affecting the sustainability of CSE delivered through a youth club organized after school hours in Zambia.
METHODS: We interviewed teachers and community health workers…

Psychological treatments delivered by lay therapists, with little or no previous mental health training, have been shown to be effective in treating a range of mental health problems. In low resource settings, the dearth of available experts to assess therapy quality potentially leads to a bottleneck in scaling up lay therapist delivered psychological treatments. Peer-led supervision and the assessment of therapy quality may be one solution to address this barrier. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to assess lay therapist quality ratings compared to expert supervisors in a multisite s

BACKGROUND: Studies in resource-limited settings have shown that there are constraints to the use of teachers, peers or health professionals to deliver school health promotion interventions. School health programmes delivered by trained lay health counsellors could offer a cost-effective alternative. This paper presents a case study of a multi-component school health promotion intervention in India that was delivered by lay school health counsellors, who possessed neither formal educational nor health provider qualifications.
METHODS: The intervention was based on the WHO's Health Promoting S

After one year Edinburgh's Community Drug Problem Service has shown that if psychiatric services offer consultation and regular support for drug users many general practitioners will share the care of such patients and prescribe for them, under contract conditions, whether the key worker is a community psychiatric nurse or a drug worker from a voluntary agency. This seems to apply whether the prescribing is part of a "harm reduction" strategy over a long period or whether it is a short period of methadone substitution treatment. Given the 50% prevalence of HIV infection among drug users in the

The Tanzania Lymphatic Filariasis Programme, which was launched in 2000, is, in terms of geographical coverage, among the largest disease-control programmes in Tanzania's history, currently reaching 9.4 million people in 34 districts. The issues associated with this programme's implementation are reviewed here, in the context of the various players/stakeholders involved. This article provides an insight of how the programme began and discusses key areas in the programme's design. Mainly, however, it gives some impressions of how the programme is perceived by, and how it affects, village health

India is a signatory to World Health Assembly resolution for elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and National Health Policy has set the goal of LF elimination by 2015. Annual mass drug administration (MDA) is ongoing in endemic districts since 1996-97. Compliance rate is a crucial factor in achieving elimination and was assessed in three districts of Tamil Nadu for 10th and 11th treatment rounds (TRs). An in-depth study assessed the impact of social mobilization by drug distributors (DDs) in two areas from each of the three districts. Overall coverage and compliance for assessed TRs were

Background: Despite the general interest in WPV against healthcare workers, there is evidence that this topic has comparatively fewer studies conducted in the context of community settings than in hospital settings. Given the current general transition of care from hospital to community, this study aims to analyze whether community settings present different characteristics in comparison with hospital settings on this topic in Italy. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted from 2020 to 2024 on aggressions reported by HCWs in hospitals and community settings belonging to a Lo
