Accumulating evidence suggests that conscientiousness involves both adaptive and maladaptive aspects. However, the specific facets that constitute these contrasting aspects remain insufficiently understood. To address this gap, the present study examines the specific relationships between facets of conscientiousness and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Utilizing a bi-factor model, we investigated how domain-level conscientiousness, and its facets relate to OC symptoms in two distinct samples: 388 college students (mean age = 20.64 ± 1.68 years) and 381 individuals from the general populatio

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) and disorders due to addictive behaviours (DABs) are prevalent conditions that share behavioural and neurobiological characteristics. The Research Domain Criteria lists a series of constructs whose dysfunctions may be present in both groups of disorders. The present study will describe the research protocol of a scoping review of the literature on self-report scales and questionnaires that tap dysfunctional constructs that underlie OCRDs and DABs.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol outlines a scoping review on self-report tools

Responses of 150 outpatients, suffering from physical or emotional problems to a 186-item questionnaire concerning their possession of behavioral traits that have been associated with anal and oral personality structures, as well as their practices and concerns about mouth and bowel function, were factor analyzed. Results were comparable with those from an earlier study involvine Army recruits as subjects, in showing some factors that resembled aspects of oral and anal character as described in psychoanalytic theory. These factors were not strong, nor were they clearly related to mouth and bow

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to extend the knowledge about orthosomnia, that is, excessive preoccupation with sleep, by developing a scale for its assessment.
METHODS: In Study 1, an initial item pool was presented to 34 sleep experts for assessment using the Delphi method. In Study 2, relevant items were administered to 994 survey respondents (mean age = 42 years, SD = 13.2) for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Two factors were retained, reflecting "interference" and "rigidity," each comprising six items. In Study 3, the scale was validated against multiple validated instrumen

Cluster-C personality disorders (PDs) are common in the general population but often overlooked in scientific research and clinical practice. An important step to increase awareness for timely diagnosis and treatment of cluster-C PDs is to investigate the burden of disease in terms of quality of life (QoL), daily functioning and the associated costs to society. In addition, a comparison between these patients and a control group can give insight into (1) the actual societal costs that are associated to cluster-C PD problems and (2) potential societal savings to be made from therapeutic interve

Mechanisms by which trait-disgust, i.e. relatively stable individual differences in disgust proneness, affects anxious psychopathology are not well understood. A possible pathway might be the impact of trait-disgust on cognitive processes, which are involved in the anxiety disorders. The present study extends findings on interpretational and attentional bias by investigating the judgmental bias. Based on theories on disgust, it was assumed that trait-disgust is related to predictions of catching a disease. The present study examined the likelihood of becoming ill, the probability of avoidance

This study investigated the relationship between field independence and defense clustering as measured by the Defense Mechanisms Inventory and lateral eye movements. Subjects had previously been classified either as hysterical or obsessive style by the Rorschach and WAIS Comprehension subtest. Previous findings indicate that these subjects have a preferred direction of lateral eye movement in a questioning format (hysterical style = left; obsessive style = right). This study found no relationship between field independence and defense clustering and lateral eye movements. To the extent that ey

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Dysbiosis, an imbalance in the gut microbial composition, has been associated with various health conditions, including mental health disorders, autism, and inflammatory diseases. While the exact mechanisms underlying OCD remain unclear, this review presents a growing body of evidence suggesting a potential link between dysbiosis and the multifaceted etiology of OCD, interacting with genetic, neurobiological, immunological, and en

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurocognitive processes are key drivers of addictive and compulsive disorders. The current study examined whether reward-related attentional capture and cognitive inflexibility are associated with impulsive and/or compulsive personality traits, and whether these cognitive characteristics interact to predict greater compulsivity-related problems across obsessive-compulsive and drinking behaviors.
METHODS: One-hundred and seventy-three participants (mean age = 34.5 years, S.D = 8.4, 42% female) completed an online visual search task to measure reward-related attentio

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder that is characterized by the presence of obsessions and compulsions. OCD can occur in a wide range of subtypes, which may include sexual OCD, i.e., the occurrence of intrusive sexual thoughts. People with sexual OCD may experience unwanted obsessive sexual thoughts about a family member, dead or inanimate objects, animals, God, or children, which can range from mild to severe levels of occurrence. The psychodynamic perspective on OCD suggests that the content of obsessive thinking is commonly drawn from primitivized sexuality and aggression. It

This case report outlines the cognitive-behavioral treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder in a 7-year-old female with Asperger syndrome. Interventions were based upon the work of March and Mulle and were adapted in light of the patient's cognitive, social, and linguistic characteristics. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms improved markedly after approximately 6 months of treatment. Issues regarding symptom presentation, assessment, and treatment of a dually diagnosed patient are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: In childhood, diagnoses made at the first admission to a psychiatric unit are frequently unstable and temporary. In this study, we examined the stability of DSM-IV-TR disorders and groups of disorders among adolescents followed-up for 5 years after hospitalization.
METHOD: All inpatients admitted for the first time between 2007 and 2008 were included and contacted after 5 years for re-evaluation. The final sample comprised 72 patients. At admission, diagnoses were based on the DSM-IV-TR criteria, Fourth Edition. At five years, diagnoses were made using structured clinical interv

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most frequently diagnosed group of psychiatric disorders in the general population. Although anxiety disorders are often comorbid with depression and personality disorders, they rarely culminate in psychosis.
METHOD: Having observed psychosis in the course of a severe panic attack, the authors prospectively identified four patients who experienced panic attacks with co-occurring psychosis. All met the DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder. Distinctive features of their clinical presentation, pharmacotherapy, and follow-up were recorded.
RESULTS: Three

Compulsive buying is defined as repetitive impulsive and excessive buying leading to personal and familial distress. This study compares the buying behavior of depressed patients presenting with or without compulsive buying. The weight of promotional factors such as sales and advertising campaigns was systematically assessed. The impulsive nature of compulsive buying and the choice of items purchased were also investigated. For this purpose, we studied buying behavior among 52 inpatients diagnosed for major depressive episode with DSM-IV criteria. None of the patients presented mania or hypoma

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) are characterized by obsessions, compulsive or repetitive behaviors, hoarding and saving, or recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors. Although pharmacological, cognitive-behavioral, or behavioral therapies provide relief for many for these conditions, a substantial proportion respond insufficiently or experience relapses. Neurofeedback (NF) enables individuals to self-modulate neural activity in real time and has been explored as a non-invasive neuromodulation strategy in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the only OCRD in which NF has b

We assessed the prevalence of personality disorders (PD) using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders (SCID-II) in 36 patients with restricting anorexia nervosa, 30 patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and 42 patients with bulimia nervosa. Of the 108 patients, 51% met the criteria for at least one PD. The patients with PD had more severe clinical features in terms of bulimic behaviors, concurrent depressive, anxious, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychopathology related to eating disorders compared to the patients without any PD. As the field adopts dimensional models of personality disorders (DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders [AMPD]; ICD-11 Personality Disorder), it is imperative that clinical assessment tools are available to assess them. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) is one such measure, as it is routinely used in clinical practice and assesses a variety of psychological symptoms. The current study aimed to build upon previous literature using a community mental health sample and a multi-method approach. Specifically, a sample of 289 individuals enrolled in various mental
