One hundred and ninety five (195) brothel-based commercial sex workers (CSW) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, were screened for sexually transmitted disease (STD) between October 1994 and April 1995, prior to their enrollment in a multi-center comparative trial of the effectiveness of two strategies using male and female condoms. These CSW had a mean age of 22.2 (SD 4.3) years. Forty-seven per cent were Thai and 57.4 per cent had no formal education. Median duration of prostitution was 16 months and median cost for sexual service was 50 baht (US$ 2) per client. Ninety-four per cent of CSW reported alw…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate trends in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among female commercial sex workers and in their condom use pattern … e period, there was a significant increase in the proportion of commercial sex workers always using condoms from 6.3% in 1990-91 to 25.3% in 1992-93 (P = 0.0023).
CONCLUSION: The prevalences of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis infections decreased significantly among commercial sex workers in Fukuoka from 1990 through 1993, and no commercial sex worke …

We aimed to analyze the factors associated with inconsistent condom use among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Brazil. This cross-sectiona … ndom use prevalence was higher in younger MSM (< 25 years), in those who accept to have sex without condoms and who trusted their partners, and in those that used no condoms in their first sexual relation. Health actions to promote condom use in MSM should consider generational and behavioral aspects. Condom use should be encouraged in younger MSM and in …

INTRODUCTION: Condom use during penile-vaginal sex is decreasing among youth. Little research exists on the potential influence of both partners on joint condom use, especially including individual psychosocial factors and sex. Condom dispositions are individuals' behavioural tendencies to use a condom or not. Using statistical models, we aimed to understand how psychosocial factors influence condom dispositions and joint condom use.
METHODS: We used data from a Dutch online sexual behaviour survey conducted in 2023 among 752 16-24 years old engaging in penile-vaginal sex. Partner type (one-t

BACKGROUND: Young people in Ghana face heightened risks of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies, yet condom use remains inconsistent despite widespread awareness of HIV prevention strategies. Social capital, defined as the resources and support accessed through social networks, has emerged as a potentially important factor influencing sexual and reproductive health behaviors among youth. However, the relationship between social capital and condom use among sexually active young people in Ghana is not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relatio

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV, particularly in urban Middle Eastern areas like Beirut, Lebanon. Understanding factors influencing HIV prevention, such as condom use and HIV testing is crucial. This study used the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) Model determinants and explored social environment factors to assess their associations with condomless sex and HIV testing. Model fit was also examined to compare our IMB model alone versus an extended model incorporating social environment factors. A sample of 164 MSM (ages 18-29) in Beirut was a

OBJECTIVE: While there have been numerous innovations recently for the management of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), a limited body of research supports their application during this critical complication, which contributes significantly to maternal mortality worldwide. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three interventions - transvaginal uterine artery clamp (TVUAC), vacuum-assisted uterine contraction using a suction cannula (SC), and condom tamponade (CT) - in the management of atonic PPH.
METHODS: An open-label RCT was conducted among women who del

BACKGROUND: The HIV prevalence among Ethiopian female sex workers (FSWs) is estimated to be around 18.5%, which implies that FSWs' sexual partners are significantly exposed to HIV infection and that may be a major factor in HIV transmission in the community. However, it has long been known that using condoms correctly and consistently is an extremely cost-effective global method for preventing HIV infection, but inconsistent condom use (ICU) would pose the greatest proximal risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. Understanding the prevalence and associated risk factors of inconsistence condo…

INTRODUCTION: Daily antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a safe and effective method of preventing HIV. Clinicians' assumptions, biases, and judgments may impede access to PrEP. Specifically, concern that patients will engage in more condomless sex ("risk compensation") has been cited by clinicians as a reason for not prescribing PrEP.
METHODS: In this experimental study among medical students, we systematically varied race (White or Black) and condom-use behaviors (continued-use, planned-discontinuation, or continued-nonuse) of a fictional patient (all men with multiple male sex

RESULTS: At the individual level, CCU was positively associated with higher education, disclosure of key population status to a healthcare worker and negative …

BACKGROUND: HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective tool in preventing HIV infection among high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM). It is unknown how effective PrEP is in the context of other implemented HIV prevention strategies, including condom use, seroadaption, and treatment as prevention (TasP). We evaluate the impact of increasing uptake of PrEP in conjunction with established prevention strategies on HIV incidence in a high-risk population of MSM through simulation.
METHODS: Agent-based simulation models representing the sexual behavior of high-risk, urban MSM in the Unit

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. While evidence on uterine balloon tamponade efficacy for severe hemorrhage is encouraging, little is known about safety of this intervention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of an ultra-low-cost uterine balloon tamponade package (named ESM-UBT) for facility-based management of uncontrolled postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in Kenya and Sierra Leone.
METHODS: Data were collected on complications/adverse events in all women who had an ESM-UBT device placed among 92

IMPORTANCE: Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), specifically intrauterine devices and implants, offers an unprecedented opportunity to reduce unintended pregnancies among adolescents because it is highly effective even with typical use. OBJECTIVE: To compare condom use between sexually active female LARC users and users of moderately effectiv…
