The review presents the structures of the O-specific polysaccharides (O-antigens) of the lipopolysaccharides isolated from over 25 Citrobacter strains, which represent different species and serogroups. Serum to thermostable Y. pseudotuberculosis toxin is shown to induce agglutination of bacteria belonging to all 8 serologic variants of this species. No cross reactions with other enterobacterial species, including four Yersinia species, were detected. The results permit us recommend the antitoxic serum for identification of Y. pseudotuberculosis.

A micro-scale enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for African trypanosomiasis is described. The test uses very small quantities of sera and with T. brucei antigen is sensitive in detecting T. rhodesiense infections in man. The indirect haemagglutination test has been developed for use with LCM and Tacaribe viruses employing antibody-sensitized erythrocytes. Both in this test and in the indirect haemagglutination inhibition test cross-reactions between LCM and Tacaribe viruses were revealed. This opens new perspectives for group and species identification of arenaviruses.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional responses to a mailed survey assessed reactions to uncertainty using a well-validated instrument. Responses were linked to radiologists' diagnostic mammography interpretive performance obtained from three regional mammography registries.

The incidence of early anaphylactic reactions to scorpion antivenom given i.v. after Tityus serrulatus scorpion sting was evaluated in 103 children aged up to 15 years in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. In this report we summarize our experiences with the reaction products of N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) esters, which are widely used for chemical cross-linking of lysine residues in proteins. We describe the products, which should be scrutinized during data analysis using customized software when NHS esters are employed for chemical cross-linking. Reaction products of NHS esters were observed not only with lysines, but also with serines, tyrosines, and threonines. This report is intended to be a practical guide for those working in the field of chemical cross-linking and mass spectrometry.
