Pathway-2 is the first randomised, double-blind and crossover trial that compares spironolactone as a fourth drug with alfa-blocker, beta-blocker and placebo. This study shows that spironolactone is the drug with more possibilities of success for the management of patients with difficult-to-treat hypertension in patients with a combination of three drugs and poor control. The results validate the widespread treatment with mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists in resistant hypertension.

PURPOSE: To determine the bioavailability and pharmacokinetic profile of lumiracoxib from different sites in the gastrointestinal tract.
METHODS: Subjects (11 healthy adult males) were randomized to receive a 100 mg lumiracoxib dose, via a site-specific radiolabeled delivery capsule, to the stomach (internal reference), proximal small bowel, distal small bowel, or ascending colon. Over a 14-day period the obstructed ureter dilated to an average of 15.3 mm. Obesity shortens life expectancy. The peripheral administration of peptide YY3-36 (PYY3-36) inhibits food intake in mice and rats. The effects of PYY3-36 on food intake have been assessed in obese and lean subjects in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study. In fasting obese and lean subjects, infusion of PYY3-36 reduced the caloric intake in 24 h by 17 and 24%, respectively. Long-term studies to determine whether PYY3-36 reduces food intake in freely fed humans are now required.

The analysis of serial measurements obtained in longitudinal studies plays an increasingly prominent role in applied research. The last few years have seen the development of many new techniques for carrying out analyses, including computer software. These methods can be used in a variety of standard problems, including repeated measures and cross-over designs, as well as growth curve analyses. We review these new methods, their application, and available computer packages. Data from a longitudinal study of lung function is used to illustrate the methods.
