Ovarian cyst mimicking ascites on abdominal ultrasonography in a prepubertal female.

Ultrasonography has been commonly used in the diagnosis of intraabdominal cysts like ovarian cysts. Massive ovarian cysts can mimic ascites clinically (a condition termed pseudoascites) and ultrasonographically and can cause delay in the diagnosis and management. Clinicians should therefore consider other differential diagnoses in cases of large intraabdominal fluid collection. We report such a case in a prepubertal female which was diagnosed as ascites by ultrasonography initially but later turned out to be an ovarian cyst.

Posttraumatic iris implantation cyst with sediment containing occult glass intraocular foreign bodies.

We report a unique case of a posttraumatic iris implantation cyst with sediment containing occult glass intraocular foreign bodies detected 50 years after penetrating ocular trauma. Ultrasound biomicroscopy demonstrated foreign-body echoes with reverberation artifacts within the cyst fluid sediment, which were confirmed intraoperatively as glass particles. Cytologic analysis of the aspirate revealed epithelial cells, lymphocytes, and macrophages, while histopathologic examination of the cyst wall demonstrated nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium. This previously unreported presentatio…

Non-traumatic False Cyst of the Spleen: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

False cysts have no cellular lining and usually originate from past abdominal trauma. We herein report a 23-year-old woman with an asymptomatic splenic false cyst. She had no history of abdominal trauma. Abdominal computed tomography showed a cystic lesion without internal structure. In contrast, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography revealed an inhomogeneous internal structure without fluid/debris level. Although the images were not typical of a splenic false cyst, the surgically excised mass histologically showed a splenic false cyst (no epithelial element). Non-traumatic splenic fa

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma arising in a paratubal mesothelial cyst of the mesosalpinx--a case report.

Primary carcinoma arising from a paratubal cyst in the mesosalpinx in uncommon. Serous tumors of low malignant potential outnumber invasive carcinomas, which are often of endometrioid type. Only five cases of serous papillary cystadenocarcinoma with capsular invasion have been documented. We report a case of invasive papillary cystadenocarcinoma arising in a large paratubal cyst of the mesosalpinx, in an infertile woman. Possible hormonal basis, its link to serous borderline and malignant tumors of the peritoneum, and value of pre/intra operative cyst fluid cytology are discussed. Lack of defi…

Solitary bone cyst in the odontoid process and body of the axis. A case report and review of literature.

A four-year-old boy presented with a solitary bone cyst in the odontoid process and body of the axis. Plain radiographs showed a radiolucent lesion with extreme thinning of the cortex and MRI demonstrated a high signal intensity in the interlesional matrix. The cystic component extended into the body of the axis through a defect in the epiphyseal plate. At operation, the cavity of the cyst was found to contain serosanguineous fluid, and histological examination showed that it was lined by a thin layer of connective tissue. The cyst may have originated from a defect in the epiphyseal plate.

Spinal arachnoid cysts associated with syringomyelia: a review of the literature and report of a case.

Syringomyelia is a not infrequent pathology that develops related to changes in cerebrospinal fluid dynamics due to many etiological factors. The development of syringomyelia through a spinal arachnoid cyst is quite rare and has been defined in only 31 cases in the literature. A case due to thoracic epidural lipomatosis has also been reported. There have been no previous reports of thoracic region epidural lipomatosis with underlying arachnoid cyst and syringomyelia as in our case. We present a 27-year-old patient who developed thoracic arachnoid cyst and underlying syringomyelia because of th

Ectopic ventricular recurrence of an epidermoid cyst in the middle fossa.

We present the first case of ectopic ventricular recurrence of an epidermoid cyst in the middle fossa with confirming histological characteristics. A 51-year-old woman presented with an epidermoid cyst in the middle fossa and underwent complete resection. On the 6-month surgical follow-up MRI, a nodular lesion was detected in the frontal horn of the left lateral ventricle without evidence of recurrence at the primary site. The patient underwent transcortial tumor resection. Results of histological studies confirmed that the lesion was an epidermoid cyst similar to the primary lesion. This is a

Perirenal pyelocaliceal diverticulum in an infant cat.

A 3-month-old female tortoise-shell cat showing azotemia died with a marked swollen abdomen. Necropsy revealed a huge perirenal cyst (8.5 x 6.0 x 4.5 cm) on the ventral aspect of the right kidney. The cyst was filled with the pellucid yellow fluid with a smell of urine. The lumen was connected with irregularly dilated renal pelvis by a narrow channel passing through the renal parenchyma. The cyst was lined by epithelial cells and its wall was consisted of collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells as that of the renal pelvis and ureter. Renal parenchyma adjacent to the channel showed interstitial

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the ethmoid.

Although nearly 500 cases of aneurysmal bone cyst have been recorded in the English literature, involvement of the facial bone is uncommon. To our knowledge, this is the first case of extragnathic, facial aneurysmal bone cyst to be reported in the English literature. A left ethmoid aneurysmal bone cyst was found in a 20-year-old pregnant woman who had a 5-month history of progressive left periorbital swelling, left cystic nasal mass, progressive nasal obstruction, blurred vision, and occasional diplopia. The diagnostic evaluation included a sinus series, facial lamiograms, and an EMI scan. Nee

Popliteal Cyst: Etiology, Diagnosis and Management, a Current Concept Review.

UNLABELLED: A popliteal cyst, also referred to as a Baker's cyst, is among the most common cystic lesions encountered around the knee joint in orthopedic practice, resulting from distension of the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa within the popliteal fossa and is typically filled with synovial fluid. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used to detect and characterize these cysts. Various invasive and non-invasive therapeutic strategies have been described for the management of Baker's cysts. This review summarizes the clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and current manageme

Giant epithelial splenic cyst.

Splenic cysts are unusual in daily surgical practice and less than 1000 cases have been reported. Primary, true or epithelial splenic cysts, are even rarer. Usually, most of the cysts are asymptomatic until of significant size, at which time they are then detected incidentally on ultrasonography or CT scan. We report a case of a 25-year-old woman with giant epithelial splenic cyst with about 3000 ml of clear-yellow fluid was collected from the cyst. The splenectomy specimen measured 205 mm × 192 mm × 137 mm and weighed 4000 g.

A case report of primary multiple hydatid cysts of psoas muscle: An exceptional location.

The psoas muscle localization is even more exceptional when they are multiple. The clinical and radiological features were often misleading. This case report aimed to highlight the difficulties of radiological diagnosis and the dilemma of choosing the best operative approach. A 27 year-old-men with no past medical history has been consulted for right down abdominal quadrant pain. Physical examination revealed a painless abdominal mass. An abdominal CT Scan concluded with the presence of two multisectional cystic lesions. The first cystic lesion had an exophytic development, and the second cyst

Neonatal ovarian cysts: role of sonography in diagnosing torsion.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this case series was to determine the sonographic features of neonatal ovarian torsion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven surgically proven cases of neonatal ovarian cysts were included in this retrospective study. The patients were divided into 2 groups, torsion and non-torsion. These 7 patients were evaluated for the clinical presentation, sonographic features, surgical and pathological findings. The findings on follow-up sonography after surgery were also noted. RESULTS: The sonographic appearance was variable. Of the 4 cases with torsion, 2 lesions had internal ec

Chondroblastoma of a metacarpal bone mimicking an aneurysmal bone cyst: a case report and a review of the literature.

Chondroblastoma of the metacarpal bone has been extremely rare and only seven cases have been reported in the English literature. Here we reported the eighth case of a chondroblastoma that developed on the first metacarpal bone of the right hand of a 21-year-old man. Radiographs showed an expansile osteolytic lesion with a multilocular appearance. In MR images, the lesion showed low intensity in T1 and high intensity in T2-weighted images with multiple fluid-fluid levels, which are findings resembling those of an aneurysmal bone cyst. From the pathological findings, however, it was recognized

[Use of ultrasound-guided needle aspiration in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cysts].

The authors evaluated the advantages obtained utilizing FNAB with ultrasound in the needle aspiration of breast cysts. Echography can guide the aspiration up to its end in an effective and localized way. Cytologic examination of the cystic fluid confirmed the benign nature of the cyst. The association of needle aspiration and guided echography was related to a low number of relapses (19.8%). Among these relapses some risk factors have been found as well as a correlation between cystic fluid cytologic examination and relapses incidence has been determined.

Mediastinal cysts: diagnosis by CT and needle aspiration.

Five patients with bronchogenic or enteric cysts were diagnosed by using a combination of CT and transbronchial or transesophageal needle aspiration. Serous or mucoid fluid was successfully aspirated in each case. Cultures of the fluid were negative for pathogens, and cytologic examinations showed no malignancy. Mediastinoscopy and thoracotomy were avoided in all patients, including one symptomatic patient whose symptoms resolved after needle aspiration. CT with transbronchial or transesophageal needle aspiration represents a practical alternative to surgery in the evaluation of congenital med

[The cytological picture in pleural pneumocystosis].

We report a case of a HIV+ patient treated with prophylactic aerosolized pentamidine. The patient showed evidence of tensive right pneumothorax and slight pleural effusion. The pleural fluid was aspired from the drainage and processed in our laboratory. The cytologic examination of aspired fluid revealed abundant Pneumocystis carinii organisms. The cytologic presentation is peculiar in pleural fluid because of the presence of a large amount of trophozoites and a small number of cysts. Direct examination and Giemsa stain are suitable methods to detect trophozoites. The diagnosis can be confirme
