A population of 549 HIV-positive intravenous drug users, 140 of whom were women, recruited between June 1985 and June 1991, were studied to determine the usefulness of minor clinical signs and biological parameters in predicting progression to AIDS at different CD4+ levels. Ninety-eight subjects developed AIDS during a median follow-up of 4 years. Oral thrush was predictive of progression to AIDS independently of the CD4+ level at enrollment; seborrheic dermatitis was predictive of disease progression only in those with CD4+ under 500 cells/mm3. Regarding the predictive value of the biologic p

For many years, the biblical term tzaraat has referred to leprosy. In fact, the disease or diseases described under this name have no relationship to leprosy, as it was known in the Middle Ages or today; moreover, the term referred not only to skin disease, but also to the state of the ritual impurity and punishment for the sins. Although the real nature of tzaraat remains unknown, the differential diagnosis might include the following: Psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, favus, dermatophyte infections, nummular dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, pityriasis rosea, crusted scabies, syphilis, impetigo

Skin disruptions account for 20% to 30% of pediatric primary care visits [1]. These disruptions may result from skin infections, inflammatory responses, insect bites, and infestations. This article focuses on the identification and management of skin disruptions related to inflammatory dermatoses. The most common dermatoses in infancy are seborrheic dermatitis, (also known as cradle cap); diaper or primary contact dermatitis; and atopic dermatitis, more commonly referred to as eczema, an entity that has yet to be clearly defined. Recognition and appropriate treatment of these common pediatric

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis form a continuum of desquamative conditions associated with the excessive colonization of the stratum corneum by yeasts of the genus Malassezia spp. Such colonization is heterogeneous in density, ranging from discrete to abundant according to the fungal ability to adhere to individual corneocytes. The rate of action of antidandruff shampoos shed some doubts about a direct antifungal effect, but rather suggests the involvement of innate immune defenses and the chemical alteration of molecular adhesion modalities between Malassezia and corneocytes.

Scalp skin is unique on the body due to the density of hair follicles and high rate of sebum production. These features make it susceptible to superficial mycotic conditions (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and tinea capitis), parasitic infestation (pediculosis capitis), and inflammatory conditions (psoriasis). Because these scalp conditions share similar clinical manifestations of scaling, inflammation, hair loss, and pruritus, differential diagnosis is critically important. Diagnostic techniques and effective treatment strategies for each of the above conditions will be discussed.

Childhood pemphigus foliaceus typically causes erythema and scaling of the scalp. Sometimes, blisters and oozing are present, which often are misdiagnosed as either impetigo or seborrheic dermatitis. The eruption may progress to involve the trunk and limbs, the lesions often having an arcuate pattern. The diagnosis can be established by histologic and immunologic evaluation. In children, the disease seems to be less severe than pemphigus vulgaris, as is the case with adults, and we recommend a trial of topical steroids before embarking on systemic therapy.

Human hair has been classified into 3 major groups, as determined by ethnic origin. In these populations, significant structural and biochemical variations of the hair follicle and shaft are seen, as well as unique hair grooming practices. These structural variations of the hair are closely linked to the common disorders of the hair and scalp, such as acquired trichorrhexis nodosa, seborrheic dermatitis, traction alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, dissecting cellulitis, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and pseudofolliculitis barbae.

The recent resurgence of syphilis mandates that clinicians maintain a heightened suspicion for Treponema infection, and that they be aware of the variety of cutaneous presentations that may mimic eczema, psoriasis, drug eruption, erythema multiforme, lichen planus, tinea versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis, mycosis fungoides, or other lichenoid lesions. In this report, we describe an unusual case of secondary syphilis in an adult woman, and briefly review the wide array of syphilitic dermopathy that could present to the foot and ankle surgeon.

After demonstrating antibodies to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), two hundred patients were interviewed and given a complete cutaneous and mucous membrane examination. By means of the Walter Reed Staging Classification System for HIV infection, 155 patients were classified as having Walter Reed stage 1A-2A (WR1A-WR2A) infection. The prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis in this group was 36%. There were no other significant cutaneous findings in the WR1A-WR2A patient population.

Experimental infections were produced in guinea pigs, rabbits and dogs with lesions similar to those seen in human seborrheic dermatitis and otitis externa by cutaneous application of cultures of Malassezia furfur and M. pachydermatis. Infected animals were treated by topical application of a concentrated yeast killer toxin (Hansenula anomala UCSC 25F). Clinical recovery as well as negative mycological test cultures of infected animals proved to the clearly associated with the treatment by the killer toxin.

BACKGROUND: Facial dermatitis may result from allergic or irritant contact dermatitis, from endogenous conditions such as atopic or seborrheic dermatitis, or a combination of contributing factors.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the final diagnoses in patients referred for evaluation of facial dermatitis, and the relevant allergens in those ultimately diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).
METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis of all patients patch tested for evaluation of facial dermatitis in an Occupational and Contact Dermatitis referral clinic over a 2-year period from October 1995

Chronic ear pruritus, itching of the ear that lasts longer than six weeks, is a common symptom with a wide differential diagnosis that can significantly impair the quality of life. It can arise from such primary dermatologic conditions as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and lupus erythematosus, as well as such infestations as scabies and pediculosis capitis. Otolaryngologic causes-for example, otomycosis, chronic otitis externa, and temporomandibular joint disorders-may also lead to chronic ear pruritus. Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, hematologic

The spongiotic dermatoses including eczema and its clinicopathologic variants are capable of presenting in a variety of clinical guises and are pathologically defined by the presence of epithelial intercellular edema that may rarely form blisters. The mechanisms which underlie there pathogensis has only recently begun to be elucidated. Collectively, these disorders comprise an integral facet of dermatology and are the subject of discussion in this article.

The paper deals with neural networks for decision support in diagnosing in dermatology. There were several iterations during development. We classified six diseases using ANN: (1) Psoriasis, (2) Seborrheic dermatitis, (3) Lichen planus, (4) Pityriasis rosea, (5) Cronic dermatitis, (6) Pityriasis rubra pilaris. At first, we used all 35 attributes to conclude skin disease diagnosis with the accuracy of 96.9%. Then, we reduced the set of analyzed attributes by Pearson correlation approach to eight attributes and increased the accuracy to 98.64%. Data collection time was reduced. Thereby, the spee

Many persons in the developed countries report sensitive skin. Persons with sensitive skin have a predisposition to several skin diseases, most importantly dry skin, but also atopy, seborrheic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, rosacea, and perioral dermatitis. Their complaints may be triggered by environmental factors such as low temperature, wind, high temperature, sun exposure and stress. Various skin care products and cosmetics are not tolerated. A disturbed skin barrier function and reduced stratum corneum water content are most important in the pathophysiology of sensitive skin. Environmental fa

Periorbital contact eczema is most commonly the result of an allergic contact dermatitis whereas other eczematous skin diseases like atopic eczema or seborrheic eczema occur less frequently. Also, other diseases like autoimmune disorders or rosacea need to be considered. Allergic contact dermatitis is a T-cell-mediated immunological response towards ubiquitous contact allergens. Activated T-cells migrate through the vessels into the skin and produce several inflammatory mediators. Epicutaneous patch testing is an important tool for the diagnosis of contact allergy whereby the allergens are ana
