A survey of nutrition practices for patients with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) affects approximately 30,000 people in the United States and is characterized by pulmonary disease and poor nutrition. Optimal nutrition is associated with better pulmonary function, and aggressive nutrition interventions have played a major role in increased survival. Even though the CF Foundation (CFF) has published treatment guidelines for certain areas of nutrition care, there may still be variability in other areas. Thus, the purpose of this study was to survey current practices among CF dietitians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 25-item web-based survey was de

Importance of nutrition in palliative care of patients with chronic disease.

Good nutrition is important in caring for patients with life-limiting illness, not only for meeting the body's physical requirements but also because of its associated social, cultural and psychological benefits. A decision to provide nutritional care and support requires an understanding of and respect for patients' wishes, as well as an appreciation of their expectations and the benefits and burdens of such support. The patient, his or her family and healthcare professionals should openly discuss and agree the goals of nutritional care and support at an early stage, rather than waiting until

Diabetes white paper: Defining the delivery of nutrition services in Medicare medical nutrition therapy vs Medicare diabetes self-management training programs.

Registered dietitians (RDs) have a defined and unique role in care for patients with diabetes that differs depending on whether the service is for medical nutrition therapy (MNT) or part of a diabetes self-management training (DSMT) program (DSMT and diabetes self-management education [DSME] are used interchangeably in this article). The purpose of this article is to describe the current regulatory and practice framework that supports nutrition care under Medicare Part B for people with diabetes. A description of MNT and DSMT provided under Medicare Part B is included. The role of RDs and othe

The food propensity questionnaire: concept, development, and validation for use as a covariate in a model to estimate usual food intake.

OBJECTIVE: Twenty-four-hour recalls capture rich information on food consumption, but suffer from inadequately measuring usual intakes of episodically consumed foods. We explore using food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) data as covariates in a statistical model to estimate individual usual intakes of episodically consumed foods and their distributions and describe the development of the Food Propensity Questionnaire, an FFQ introduced in the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. DESIGN: We analyzed data from 965 adult participants in the Eating at America's Table Study wh

Physicians and nurses can be effective educators in coronary risk reduction.

OBJECTIVES: 1) To compare the impact of a brief physician or nurse education session with the impact of education provided by dietitians on patient knowledge regarding coronary risk factors, dietary recommendations, and compliance, and 2) to determine the value of additional formal dietary counseling on knowledge, dietary fat, and serum lipids. DESIGN: Primary care physicians and their office nurses were compared with inpatient dietitians by evaluating patient performance on a standardized test and three-day dietary food choices. Neither the educators nor the patients were aware of the study.

Obesity in preschool children: an intervention programme in primary health care in Singapore.

The Programme on Prevention and Management of Obesity in Preschool Children, aged three to six years, was implemented in 17 Primary Health Clinics in November 1991. This group was divided into three categories, namely, mildly overweight (120% to below 140%), moderately overweight (140% to below 160%), and severely overweight (above 160%). The severely overweight category was referred to dietit

Healthcare Resource Utilization and Costs in Celiac Disease: A US Claims Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease (CeD) is a lifelong immune-mediated enteropathy in which dietary gluten triggers an inflammatory reaction in the small intestine. This retrospective cohort study examines healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and costs between patients with CeD and matched controls. METHODS: Patients with CeD (cases) with an endoscopic biopsy and ≥2 medical encounters with a CeD diagnosis between January 1, 2010, and October 1, 2015, were identified in the MarketScan databases. The date of the first claim with a CeD diagnosis on or after the endoscopic biopsy was the index date. C

The Acceptability and Experiences of Participating in a Preoperative Intentional Weight-Loss Programme From Diagnosis to Surgery for Colorectal Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer surgery has a higher risk of complications for patients carrying excess weight. Preoperative weight loss might reduce this risk. However, it is unclear how patients perceive engagement with an intensive weight-loss programme in the short window between diagnosis and surgery. This qualitative study, embedded within the CARE randomised controlled trial, aimed to understand the acceptability and experiences of following an intensive weight-loss programme with dietetic support as prehabilitation before colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: Thirty-one participants (65

Factors Affecting Gluten-Free Dietary Adherence in Patients with Neurological Gluten-Related Disease.

Background/Objectives: The gluten-free diet (GFD) is the primary treatment for patients with neurological gluten-related disease, which may occur with or without coeliac disease (CD). Dietary adherence is arguably most important in such patients, as ongoing gluten exposures have been shown to exacerbate irreversible neurological deterioration. We utilised a cross-sectional postal questionnaire to explore factors affecting dietary adherence in a large sample of such patients, highlighting potential areas of dietetic need. Methods: Patients returned a postal questionnaire (N = 225), which assess
