Neurobehavioral Predictors of Fibromyalgia: Internal Validation of a Model Based on Psychological Distress and Affective Regulation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia is increasingly viewed as a disorder of central sensitization, involving altered nociceptive processing and dysregulated stress and affective neural systems. Evidence supports shared neurobiological mechanisms linking chronic pain, emotional distress, and affect regulation, including corticolimbic and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis alterations. However, predictive models evaluating psychological distress as markers of these brain-based processes remain scarce. This study aimed to internally validate a preliminary model of fibromyalgia diagnosis using se

Employment Status of Patients With Liver Disease: A Nationwide Questionnaire Survey in Japan.

AIM: Patients with chronic liver disease often experience significant physical, psychological, and financial burdens. These burdens result from repeated long-term hospital visits or admissions caused by progression to decompensated cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients with viral liver disease may fear discrimination or social prejudice. This study aimed to clarify the employment status of patients with liver disease in Japan and provide basic data to promote support for balancing treatment and work responsibilities. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey on employment was

Motives for and Barriers to Research Participation Among Racially and Ethnically Diverse Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans in general-and especially those who identify as Veterans of color-are underrepresented in health-related treatment research. This contributes to health inequity by hindering the development of evidence-based treatment recommendations for people of color. This project utilized culturally centered research procedures to identify health-related research priorities and examine motives for and barriers to research participation in a diverse sample of Veterans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Veterans (N = 330, 32% female; 36% Black, 28% White, 15% Latinx, 12% Asian, 4% Multiracial) r

Realities and challenges for female cardiothoracic surgeons: an African perspective.

It is a fact that, despite the worldwide increasing intake of women in medical schools, women are still grossly underrepresented in all medical and surgical specialities, and definitely in cardiothoracic surgery in both developed and developing countries. This is counter-productive towards meeting the escalating need for cardiac surgical care in Africa. However, the natural evolution over time of increasing numbers of females entering medical school and specializing in the field of surgery, is expected to continue despite multiple challenges encountered on their way. The inequities of healthca

Phonological but not auditory discrimination is impaired in dyslexia.

Deficient phonological skills are considered to be a core problem in developmental dyslexia. Children with dyslexia often demonstrate poorer performance than non-impaired readers when categorizing speech-sounds. Using the automatic mismatch response, we show that in contrast to this deficit at the behavioural level, neurophysiological responding in dyslexic children indicates their ability to automatically discriminate syllables. Therefore, the phonological deficit is unlikely to be caused by a temporal deficit or by a noisy functional organization in the respective representational cortex. We

A single session of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation does not modulate effects of knee two-point discrimination training or sensorimotor function in healthy adults: Double-blind randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Benefits of sensory-training interventions on sensorimotor outcomes are inconsistent, and it is unclear whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can enhance proprioception, which is fundamental to neuromuscular control. Existing evidence is dominated by upper-limb studies, so transferability to the knee is unclear. This study investigated whether a single session of anodal high-definition (HD)-tDCS, alone or combined with brief two-point discrimination (TPD) training, enhances knee sensorimotor function and performance in healthy adults. METHODS: In a double-blind ra

Near the self-other discrimination threshold, experience of goal-oriented movement increases the sensitivity of the sense of agency.

OBJECTIVES: The sense of agency (SoA) refers to the experience of controlling one's own motor actions and the external world through intention. According to the comparator model, SoA is generated when prediction signals from intended motor actions match the sensory feedback from actual outcomes, or when prediction errors are small. Previous work reported that SoA remained robust after short-term mismatch exposure, but in that study mismatches were far below individual detection thresholds and lacked external goals. This study examined whether the degree of sensorimotor mismatch in goal-directe

Modality-dependent bottom-up attention and eye gaze direction affect auditory spatial discrimination.

A combined behavioral and EEG experiment examined the effects of intramodal and crossmodal cueing on auditory spatial discrimination. On each trial, the participant fixated a neutral location and was presented with an auditory target (two broadband "buzzes" with a slight relative spatial offset) from one of two locations (central or lateral). The target was preceded by a cue varying in its validity (presented from the same or a different location than the target with a 50% probability) and modality (auditory or visual, in separate blocks). The participant's task was to indicate the direction o

Novelty Discrimination of Configural Objects in the Perirhinal and Anterolateral Entorhinal Cortices Is Impacted by Aging.

The representational-hierarchical account of object processing characterizes the perirhinal cortex (PRC) as supporting conjunctive representations of object features, such that damage or age-related decline in the PRC impairs discrimination between complex object with overlapping features. In older adults, gray matter volume of the anterolateral entorhinal cortex (alERC), a PRC-adjacent region, correlated with object discrimination based on configural (spatial) arrangements of features. However, this relationship has not yet been examined with functional activation or systematically investigat

Mind the gap: the temporal discrimination threshold of tactile sensation from implanted peripheral nerve stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The ability to reliably detect the temporal order, overlap, and gaps between multiple tactile stimuli is crucial for making sense of our haptic interactions with complex environments. One important property of temporal processing of touch is the temporal discrimination threshold (TDT), which measures the shortest gap between two sequential stimuli required for them to be perceived as separate events. While the temporal properties of natural somatosensation are well understood, much less is known about the temporal properties of sensation elicited by peripheral nerve stimulation (PN

Discrimination of Pairs of Chemosensory Stimuli in Relation to Respiration.

OBJECTIVE: Are paired chemosensory stimuli with very short interstimulus-intervals (ISIs) more often perceived as distinct events when delivered synchronously with inspiration than when delivered asynchronously? METHODS: Twin stimuli (H2S, phenylethyl alcohol [PEA], CO2) were repeatedly administered intranasally to 40 participants using a constant-flow olfactometer, synchronized with inspiration, at varying ISIs. In the first part of the study, participants indicated whether they perceived one or two stimuli. In the second part, event-related potentials (CSERP) were recorded from 20 participa

Impaired perception of isoluminant contrast modulation stimuli: Evidence for a magnocellular pathway mechanism.

Contrast modulation (CM) stimuli have been previously used to reveal nonlinear contributions of Y-like retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) such as parasol cells to cortical responses and perception. To test whether CMs are selectively processed within the magnocellular pathway, we assessed envelope motion discrimination and detection for achromatic (yellow-black) and chromatic (red-green) CMs in the presence of luminance masking noise to disrupt luminance-based mechanisms of motion processing. Compared to achromatic CMs, perception of chromatic CMs was more sensitive to luminance masking noise, sugg

Rapid concerted switching of the neural code in the inferotemporal cortex.

A fundamental paradigm in neuroscience is that neurons represent the world through fixed tuning functions, with stable mappings from stimulus features to firing rates1. Here, we report that tuning can instead shift rapidly and coherently across a neural population, enabling a dynamic transition from detecting a broad category to discriminating individual exemplars. We set out to address a longstanding debate in visual neuroscience about whether the inferotemporal cortex uses a specialized code for specific object categories or a general-purpose code that applies to all objects. We found that f

Transcranial magnetic stimulation over right intraparietal sulcus improves selective attention for feature discriminating.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have confirmed the coordinated control of attentional processes by the frontal and parietal lobes. However, the function of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) in the attention system remains unclear. In this study, we measured transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-evoked event-related potentials (ERPs) to determine the extent to which the right intraparietal sulcus (rIPS) is involved in attentional processing. We hypothesized that TMS potentiates the activation of the rIPS during attentional processing. METHODS: We enrolled 26 healthy participants who received singl

Regulation of Somatosensory Temporal Discrimination Threshold Through Motor Training: An EEG and Kinematics Study.

AIMS: Motor training enhances somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT), but the distinct neural mechanisms underlying actual execution versus motor imagery remain unclear. This study aimed to compare the effects of ball-rotation training (BRT; actual execution) and visual-guided imagery (VGI; motor imagery) on STDT, kinematic performance, and neurophysiological plasticity in healthy adults. METHODS: Forty-eight right-handed participants were randomized into four groups: BRT (actual execution), VGI (motor imagery without movement), tactile control (simple gripping), and no-interv

Parietal neurons encode information sampling based on decision uncertainty.

During natural behavior, animals actively gather information that is relevant for learning or actions; however, the mechanisms of active sampling are rarely investigated. We tested parietal neurons involved in oculomotor control in a task in which monkeys made saccades to gather visual information relevant to a subsequent action. We show that the neurons encode, before the saccade, the information gain (reduction in decision uncertainty) that the saccade was expected to bring for the following action. Sensitivity to information gain correlates with the monkeys' efficiency at processing the inf
