The relationship between carbon disulfide (CS2) and the symptoms and signs of nervous system in rayon workers was investigated. In a cross sectional study of CS2-exposed workers from the viscose industry and controls, data on neurological symptoms and clinical neurological examination were evaluated. The exposed subjects includes 326 workers and 105 workers from the same factory, without exposure to CS2 or to any other neurotoxic agents, served as controls. The median exposure to CS2(8 h time weighted) in the low-level exposure group was 4.6 mg/m3, and 18.3 mg/m3 in high-level exposure group.

The exposure-excretion relationship to carbon disulfide (CS2) vapor in 407 exposed workers was studied during the second half of the working week. Nitrogenase catalyzes the reduction of N2, protons, and a number of alternative substrates that contain C-C, C-N, N-N, and N-O double and triple bonds. A visual and computer-assisted analysis was made of basic brain biological function in 45 EEG recordings of alpha waves alone or mostly alpha waves. The study revealed abnormal frequency of alpha waves in patients with chronic alcoholism (60%) and in people chronically exposed to carbon disulphide (73.4%). The abnormalities most probably reflect dysfunction of the CNS.

In previous studies (Masuda and Nakayama, 1983), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and carbon disulfide (CS2) have been found to be protective against acute nephrotoxicity induced by CHCl3 and 1,1-dichloroethylene in normal and CCl4-poisoned mice, and it has been suggested that the protective action of DTC and CS2 might be mediated through inhibition of bioactivation of these nephrotoxicants in the kidney. In order to clarify the pathogenesis of carbon disulfide retinopathy, fluorescein fundus angiograms were analyzed for 143 workers exposed to CS2 and 40 unexposed workers (reference) from viscose rayon factories. Retinal abnormalities, characterized by saccular microaneurysms, ellipsoidal microaneurysms and loop formation of small vessels, and atrophic/degenerative changes of pigmentary epithelium, were found in workers exposed to CS2. The studies covered 32 workers chronically exposed to CS2 and controls. In all subjects diethyldithiocarbamaturia was evaluated and J131 labelled Bengal Rouge decay half-time was determined. The studies indicated statistically significantly lower DDC excretion in CS2 exposed workers, as compared to controls. On the other hand no statistically significant differences were found at the Bengal rouge decay half--time in blood. The above studies suggest that the disulphuran metabolic route was impaired prior to the occurrence of the changes in liver blood flow of CS2 exposed workers.

62 men producing artificial fibres were administered for 2 years an artichoke extract as a preparation called Cynarex, produced by the Herbs Plant, Herbapol" in Wrocław. The spontaneous and ADP-induced platelets aggregation was examined by the method of Holdrinet et al. The platelets ability to aggregate, whether spontaneously or by induction was found to be statistically significantly reduced. The spontaneous aggregation after two years of Cynarex administration was reduced on average by 51%.
