Zenkers diverticulum is the most common type of esophageal diverticulum with a prevalence of 0.01 to 0.11 %, usually found in middle-aged and older patients. The prevalent symptoms are dysphagia and regurgitation. Treatment is recommended in symptomatic patients and consists of myotomy of the cricopharyngeal muscle. Both surgical and endoscopic methods are used in the treatment of Zenkers diverticulum. With technical advances, flexible endoscopy has come to the forefront in the treatment of Zenkers diverticulum, especially in older polymorbid patients. Its advantages include lower morbidity an…

BACKGROUND: Vascular rings with a Kommerell diverticulum (KD) most commonly occur in patients with a right aortic arch. We report on a less commonly seen subset of vascular ring patients-those with a double aortic arch and a KD.
METHODS: Between 2002 and 2017, 66 patients underwent an operation for a double aortic arch. Ten of those patients also had excision of a KD. We performed a retrospective medical record review of these patients to characterize their demographics and outcomes.
RESULTS: All 10 patients (7 male, 3 female) had a double aortic arch that was right dominant and also had a K…

A 72-year-old female presented to the Emergency Department with 12 hours of non-specific epigastric pain. Her epigastrium was tender and inflammatory markers were mildly increased. A Computed Tomography scan revealed no acute pathology however there was a giant diverticulum arising from the second/third part of the duodenum measuring 9.5 × 5.7 × 7.3 cm. This was thought to be incidental, her pain settled and she was discharged. Diverticula are common throughout the gastrointestinal tract, predominantly in the colon. Within the small bowel they occur most commonly in the duodenum and are often …

A 64-year-old man underwent abdominal computed tomography (CT) as periodic follow-up following a distal gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy for … odenal diverticula are relatively common, an enterolith developing within a juxtapapillary duodenal diverticulum is rare, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first such case due to altered anatomy after gastrectomy reported in the English literature.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum is a common malformation in children, usually asymptomatic, with complications in only 20% of cases. Exceptionally, a tumor can develop in Meckel's diverticulum in children, particularly Burkitt's lymphoma; in adults it can develop into a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, a leiomyosarcoma, or a neuroendocrine tumor such as a carcinoid tumor. The diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor following an insidious perforation is rare.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 14-month-old boy who presented with fever, asthenia, food refusal, and digestive complaints such a…

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the small bowel and is caused by the incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct during the eighth week of gestation.
METHODS: We report the case of a 51-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with epigastric pain, vomiting, and abdominal distension. Clinically, he had a high intestinal obstruction without any mechanical cause on computed tomography scan. A median laparotomy was proposed.
RESULTS: An internal ileum hernia was identified twisted around a giant Meckel's diverticulum with a mes…

Congenital anomalies of the urogenital tract are the most common anomalies found in the foetus, neonates and infants, but anterior urethral valves and diverticula are rare. Here, we present a case with congenital anterior urethral diverticulum associated with patent ductus arteriosus and polydactyly.

Sigmoid colon diverticulosis is commonly seen in both the surgical outpatient and emergency departments. Rarely, these sigmoid diverticulum, which usually range from 2-3mm to 2cm in size, can enlarge to more than 10 times. This is due to a ball-valve type mechanism that traps colonic gas inside the sigmoid diverticulum causing it to gradually enlarge. Patients with a giant sigmoid diverticulum (GSD) must be investigated thoroughly as two per cent of patients will present with a colonic carcinoma either within or distal to the GSD. Clinical symptoms of a GSD can range from chronic abdominal pai…

BACKGROUND: Epiphrenic diverticula occur in the lowermost 10 cm of the oesophagus. The main symptoms are dysphagia, regurgitation and pain when swallowing food. The main purpose of the survey was to evaluate the department's results for surgical treatment of this rare and distressing condition.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: In the period 2002-2012, eleven patients (nine men) underwent surgery for an oesophageal diverticulum consisting of excision (n = 8), myotomy of the lower oesophageal sphincter and Dor fundoplication (n = 2) or all these procedures (n = 1). Two of them were transferred from other h…

This case report describes a unique form of a left ventricular diverticulum in a 17-year-old patient.Echocardiography, angiography, and magnetic resonance imaging including virtual endoscopy complete a detailed picture of the size and texture of a diverticulum, as well as the localisation of the two connections into the left ventricle.
