BACKGROUND: Injuries in professional baseball players have become exceedingly common. Efforts to mitigate injury risk have focused on the kinetic chain, shoulder motion, and so forth. It is unclear whether grip strength is related to injury risk in professional baseball pitchers.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine if grip strength was a risk factor for injury. It was hypothesized that pitchers with weaker grip strength would have a higher likelihood of sustaining a shoulder or elbow injury compared with pitchers with stronger grip strength.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-cont

Background Current elbow clinical scores are scarce with limited comparability between them. None of them are computerized yet. There is no forearm clinical score assessing all anatomical components of forearm disorders such as the Essex-Lopresti injuries. The aims of this paper were to present new computerized elbow and forearm clinical scores. Methods These new computerized elbow and forearm clinical scores include four clinical criteria: pain, function, active range of motion and muscle strength. To each criterion is given a numerical value among 5 grades. The weight of each criterion is

Major trauma may result in severe open elbow fractures with significant soft tissue injury and skin loss. Reconstruction of those defects can be complicated and inadequate cover can result in severely limited functional outcome. The free anterolateral thigh flap (ALT) is one of the ways to reconstruct those defects. Its utilisation in severe complex open elbow fractures is recently being increased due to its advantages. The purpose of this article is to present an interesting case where the ALT flap was used with success in a challenging situation of a severe elbow bony, ligamentous and soft t

The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is more commonly injured than previously suggested. Injury to this ligament can result in secondary symptoms and problems in other parts of the elbow, including the ulnar nerve, the flexor-pronator musculotendinous unit, the radiocapitellar joint, and the posterior compartment of the elbow, in addition to being a cause of loose bodies within the elbow. This article briefly reviews the anatomy, biomechanics, and pathophysiology of injury, in addition to discussing evaluation and treatment of the athlete with an injured UCL.

Stress fractures of the upper limb affect athletes from a wide range of sports. Athletes involved in throwing sports are particularly susceptible along with athletes from sports involving high repetitive and compressive loads such as gymnastics. Diagnosis can be made from clinical history, examination and radiography in some cases however MRI imaging is often required for definitive diagnosis. The mainstay of management is rest and activity modification however advanced pathology often requires surgical management for successful resolution and return to play. In the elbow, the bones susceptibl

Over one half of radial neck fractures are associated with other injuries about the elbow. Most radial neck fractures can be treated with closed reduction or with percutaneous probing, even if the other associated injuries require open reduction. The results are good, although radiologic imperfections may be seen after healing. In the older child, olecranon fractures that have significant displacement usually require open reduction with internal fixation.

The elbow joint often reacts to different injury patterns of the intra- and extra-articular structures with uniform symptoms that can hardly be differentiated. Furthermore, several neural entrapment syndromes around the elbow should be taken into consideration, because they make the differential diagnosis even more difficult. Cervical nerve root and brachial plexus irritations can also be responsible for pain, which is subjectively transferred to the elbow. The purpose of the study was to improve the etiological differentiation by introducing a new standardized physical examination program. Be

INTRODUCTION: Lacerations and open elbow injuries are common emergency department visits which necessitate an orthopedic surgery evaluation for a traumatic elbow arthrotomy (TEA). A delay in this diagnosis can lead to septic arthritis, requiring more invasive surgical procedures, prolonged antibiotics, and possible long-term sequelae. To date, there is scarce literature on TEA. The purpose of this case report is to better educate the orthopedic community on a reliable method of detection for a TEA, including pediatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral condyle fractures and both bone forearm fractures account for 10-15% and 13-40% of all elbow fractures in children, respectively. About 5% of forearm fractures in children have associated supracondylar fractures; hence, any forearm fractures warrant a careful examination of the elbow, and any radiographs taken should visualize the elbow joint above and wrist joint below for other injuries. We report a case of multiple upper limb fracture in a child, comprising lateral condyle and both bone forearm fractures.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of the Major League Baseball (MLB) pitch clock in 2023 aimed to shorten game durations and enhance pace of pl … ficantly from 525 to 575 (P < .001), total pitches and pitches per inning remained stable. Although elbow injuries increased in 2024 after declining in 2022 and 2023, the overall rate did not significantly differ from 2021 to 2022.
CONCLUSION: The current study shows that after the implementation of the MLB pitch clock, injury rates among high-volume pitchers d …

Flexion buckling of an arm under the large ground reaction loads associated with arresting a fall to the ground increases the risk for head and thorax injuries. Yet, the factors that determine the arm buckling load remain poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis in 18 healthy young adults that neither gender, triceps co-contraction level (i.e., 25, 50, or 75% MVC) nor elbow angle would affect the rotational stiffness and damping resistance to step changes in elbow flexion loading. Data on the step response were gathered using optoelectronic markers (150 Hz) and myoelectric activity measurem

There are numerous complications that can occur following a musculoskeletal injury or surgery in the sporting population. Prevention of the most frequent complications is the key in any successful rehabilitation program, but occasionally problems do occur. A thorough well-designed postoperative or postinjury rehabilitation program may prevent these problems. However, if complications do arise, a team approach among the parties involved in the process to develop an evidenced-based treatment program designed for the underlying complication can successfully treat these issues. The authors discuss

Artistic gymnastics is a complex and challenging sport. The specific demands of gymnastics place athletes at unique risk of injuries to the spine, as well as upper and lower extremities. Changes to the rules and scoring system since the 2004 Olympics have encouraged athletes to perform more challenging skills, adding to the risk of injury. Single-sport specialization occurs at a young age among competitive gymnasts, introducing an increased risk of overuse injuries. Common injuries include spondylolysis, medial-sided elbow injuries, gymnast's wrist, ligamentous injuries of the knee, and Achill…

Shoulder and elbow injuries have been described in baseball players as early as the 1940s. Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears have been recognized as a significant source of disability for baseball players and have been seen in increasing frequency as training regimens and level of play have become more intense and rigorous. Our understanding and treatment of these injuries have also evolved over time. This article summarizes the evolution of the treatment of UCL tears and discusses future directions for the treatment and prevention of these injuries.

Intercostal nerves (ICN) are often utilized as donors for various neurotization procedures in brachial plexus injuries. ICN to musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) transfer is usually a standard in pan brachial plexus injuries, in order to restore flexion at the elbow. A tensionless co-aptation of the donor-recipient nerves often necessitates either a distal dissection of the ICNs where the number of fascicles is rather low or a proximal dissection, often at the cost of dissection of the serratus anterior digitation with a risk of later fibrosis and adhesion. We report two cases of pan brachial plexus

INTRODUCTION: Monteggia lesion is a well-known injury that constitutes 0.7% of forearm fractures-dislocations. The combined presentation of Monteggia injury with ipsilateral distal radius fracture is an extremely rare lesion, especially in adults.
CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old woman fell from a chair, injuring her left forearm and wrist. On admission, plain roentgenograms of the left upper extremity revealed an anterior, Bado type-1 Monteggia fracture-dislocation associated with an ipsilateral distal radius fracture. The patient underwent surgical treatment of both injuries with a 3.5 limited co
