[Compliance with the partner notification of HIV/STI patients in the counties of Lleida].

OBJECTIVE: The partner notification is one of the main activities of epidemiological surveillance in Public Health. The primary objective was to estimate the compliance of the partner notification by health professionals who reported sexually transmitted diseases (HIV, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis and Chlamydia) during 2017 in Lleida's regions. METHODS: We carried out a descriptive epidemiological study of prevalence about the compliance of partner notification. Data collection was done by epidemiological surveys of these notifiable diseases and additional information was recovered through medical re

An early health technology assessment of 3D anatomic models in pediatric congenital heart surgery: potential cost-effectiveness and decision uncertainty.

Background: Three-dimensional anatomic models have been used for surgical planning and simulation in pediatric congenital heart surgery. This research is the first to evaluate the potential cost-effectiveness of 3D anatomic models with the intent to guide surgeons and decision makers on its use.Method: A decision tree and subsequent Markov model with a 15-year time horizon was constructed and analyzed for nine cardiovascular surgeries. Epidemiological, clinical, and economic data were derived from databases. Literature and experts were consulted to close data gaps. Scenario, one-way, threshold

An SEI model for sarcoptic mange among chamois.

We consider a simple model to study the dynamics of sarcoptic mange in a population of chamois. The epidemiological patterns observed during an epidemic in Italy are reconstructed and key parameters of the model are estimated from field data. In particular, we calculate the basic reproductive ratio R (0), a threshold value for chamois density for the occurrence of an epidemic and the speed of propagation of the epidemic wave. The model is then used to obtain indications on the effect of culling as a possible control measure in a closed population and extended to analyse the spatial diffusion o

Creatinine corrections for estimating children's and adult's pesticide intake doses in equilibrium with urinary pesticide and creatinine concentrations.

A urine contaminant concentration per se has uncertain meaning for human health because of dilution by hydration. However, the estimation of the health-related daily intake dose of pollutant (mg/kg/day) that equilibrates with a spot urinary concentration of a pesticide residue or metabolite, or other analyte, can be made using creatinine-corrected toxicant levels (mg analyte/mg creatinine) multiplied by an estimate of the subjects' expected creatinine excretion rates (mg creatinine/kg/day). The objective was to develop a set of equations predicting a person's expected daily creatinine excretio

Reappraising Preclinical Models of Separation Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and CO2 Sensitivity: Implications for Methodology and Translation into New Treatments.

Separation anxiety applies to multiple forms of distress responses seen in mammals during postnatal development, including separation from a caregiver. Childhood separation anxiety disorder is an important risk factor for developing panic disorder in early adulthood, and both conditions display an increased sensitivity to elevated CO2 concentrations inhaled from the air. By interfacing epidemiological, genetic, and physiological knowledge with preclinical animal research models, it is possible to decipher the mechanisms that are central to separation anxiety and panic disorders while also sugg

Post-traumatic epilepsy: An historical review from ancient observations to modern molecular mechanisms.

Post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) represents a significant neurological complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI), accounting for approximately 5% of all epilepsies and 10-20% of structural/symptomatic epilepsies in population studies. This review traces the evolution of PTE research from ancient medical observations through 140+ years of modern scientific investigation, with emphasis on the historical, epidemiological and clinical-trial literature that established the field's current conceptual and diagnostic framework. Molecular and cellular mechanisms are introduced only briefly as a bridge

From Exposure to Atherosclerosis: Mechanistic Insights into Phthalate-Driven Ischemic Heart Disease and Prevention Strategies.

Despite decades of interventions targeting modifiable risk factors to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease (IHD) remains the leading cause of mortality and the second leading cause of disability-adjusted life-years worldwide. Growing evidence suggests that phthalates-plasticizers widely used in consumer products, cosmetics, and medical devices, and therefore ubiquitous across environmental media, may contribute to IHD development. Epidemiological studies have reported associations between phthalate exposure and multiple markers of atherosclerosis, the pathologica

Factors Associated with the Occurrence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) among COVID-19 Cases.

This retrospective cohort study investigated factors associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or death among confirmed COVID-19 cases treated at a Primary Health Care (PHC) unit in Rio de Janeiro from August 2020 to January 2022. The occurrence of SARS or death was identified in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System and in the Mortality Information System, respectively. Individual characteristics, symptoms, and predominant viral variant were the explanatory variables tested in logistic regression models. Of 1,708 COVID-19 episodes, 72 (4.2%) resulted in

Exploring Aspirin's Potential in Cancer Prevention: A Comprehensive Review of the Current Evidence.

Aspirin, traditionally recognized for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and antiplatelet effects, has recently attracted attention for its potential role in cancer prevention. Initially studied for cardiovascular disease prevention, emerging evidence suggests that aspirin may reduce the risk of certain cancers, particularly colorectal cancer (CRC). This narrative review integrates findings from early studies, animal models, epidemiological data, and clinical trials to evaluate aspirin's efficacy as a chemopreventive agent. Aspirin's anticancer effects are primarily attributed to i

Multiomic signals associated with maternal epidemiological factors contributing to preterm birth in low- and middle-income countries.

Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of death in children under five, yet comprehensive studies are hindered by its multiple complex etiologies. Epidemiological associations between PTB and maternal characteristics have been previously described. This work used multiomic profiling and multivariate modeling to investigate the biological signatures of these characteristics. Maternal covariates were collected during pregnancy from 13,841 pregnant women across five sites. Plasma samples from 231 participants were analyzed to generate proteomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic datasets. Machine lear

Spatio-temporal modeling for confirmed cases of lyme disease in Virginia.

Epidemiological data often include characteristics such as spatial and/or temporal dependencies and excess zero counts, which pose modeling challenges. Excess zeros in such data may arise from imperfect detection and/or relative rareness of the disease in a given location. Here, we studied the spatio-temporal variation in annual Lyme disease cases in Virginia from 2001-2016 and modeled the disease with a spatio-temporal hierarchical Bayesian model. Using observed ecological and environmental covariates, we constructed a predictive model for the disease spread over space and time, including spa

Cross-reactive memory T cells and herd immunity to SARS-CoV-2.

Immunity is a multifaceted phenomenon. For T cell-mediated memory responses to SARS-CoV-2, it is relevant to consider their impact both on C … , we argue that key potential impacts of cross-reactive T cell memory are already incorporated into epidemiological models based on data of transmission dynamics, particularly with regard to their implications for herd immunity. The implications of immunological processes on other aspects of SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology are worthy of future study.

How autism became autism: The radical transformation of a central concept of child development in Britain.

This article argues that the meaning of the word 'autism' experienced a radical shift in the early 1960s in Britain which was contemporaneous with a growth in epidemiological and statistical studies in child psychiatry. The first part of the article explores how 'autism' was used as a category to describe hallucinations and unconscious fantasy life in infants through the work of significant child psychologists and psychoanalysts such as Jean Piaget, Lauretta Bender, Leo Kanner and Elwyn James Anthony. Theories of autism were then associated both with schizophrenia in adults and with psychoanal

Chlamydiaceae in cattle: commensals, trigger organisms, or pathogens?

Epidemiological data indicate that infection of cattle with chlamydiae such as Chlamydophila (C.) pecorum, C. abortus, C. psittaci and Chlamydia suis, is ubiquitous with mixed infections occurring frequently. The apparent lack of association between infection and clinical disease has resulted in debate as to the pathogenic significance of these organisms, and their tendency to sub-clinical and/or persistent infection presents a challenge to the study of their potential effects. However, recent evidence indicates that chlamydial infections have a substantial and quantifiable impact on livestock

Maternal infection and schizophrenia: implications for prevention.

Accumulating evidence suggests that maternal infection is a risk factor for schizophrenia. Prospective epidemiological studies indicate that maternal influenza, toxoplasmosis, and genital/reproductive infection are associated with this disorder in offspring. Preclinical models of maternal immune activation have supported the neurobiological plausibility of these microbes in schizophrenia. Previous studies suggest that treatment or prophylactic efforts targeting these and other infections could have significant effects on reducing the incidence of schizophrenia, given that they are common in th

Epidemiology of variant CJD.

There are 100 confirmed cases of variant CJD (vCJD) in the U.K., with four cases in other countries (France and the Republic of Ireland). In the U.K., The mean age of onset is 28 years (range 12-74) with a median duration of 13 months (range 6-39). There are reported regional variations in incidence in the U.K., with a North/South difference and a 'cluster' of cases in one county, Leicestershire. The incidence of cases in the U.K. is rising. There are concerns about the possibility of secondary, iatrogenic, spread of vCJD, especially given the finding of positive PrP immunocytochemistry in lym

The epidemiology of cancer.

The epidemiology of cancer has a long history. It led to the discovery of several causes of cancer before techniques for the production of the disease in laboratory animals became available. In recent years, epidemiological studies have contributed to knowledge of cancer in five ways: by demonstrating geographical and temporal variations in incidence, by correlating incidence in different communities with the prevalence of social habits and environmental agents, by comparing the experience of individuals with and without cancer, by intervening to remove suspected agents and observing the resul

The effect of HIV, behavioural change, and STD syndromic management on STD epidemiology in sub-Saharan Africa: simulations of Uganda.

An assessment was made of how the HIV epidemic may have influenced sexually transmitted disease (STD) epidemiology in Uganda, and how HIV would affect the effectiveness of syndromic STD treatment programmes during different stages of the epidemic. The dynamic transmission model STDSIM was used to simulate the spread of HIV and four bacterial and one viral STD. Model parameters were quantified using demographic, behavioural, and epidemiological data from rural Rakai and other Ugandan populations. The findings suggest that severe HIV epidemics can markedly alter STD epidemiology, especially if a

Predictive Modeling of Enterovirus Hospital Burden Using Machine Learning and Age-Specific Surveillance Data: Operational Forecasting in Taiwan During the Postpandemic Era.

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus infections cause substantial pediatric morbidity worldwide, with severe cases requiring hospitalization. Accurate forecasting of hospitalization burden supports proactive resource allocation and clinical preparedness. During the postpandemic period (2023-2024), Taiwan experienced a resurgence of enterovirus activity following COVID-19-related suppression, although at levels below prepandemic baselines, creating unique operational forecasting challenges. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate random forest models for 1-week-ahead enterovirus hospitalization
