Comparative genomic analyses of transport proteins encoded within the genomes of Leptospira species.

Select species of the bacterial genus Leptospira are causative agents of leptospirosis, an emerging global zoonosis affecting nearly one million people worldwide annually. We examined two Leptospira pathogens, Leptospira interrogans serovar Lai str. 56601 and Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo-bovis str. L550, as well as the free-living leptospiral saprophyte, Leptospira biflexa serovar Patoc str. 'Patoc 1 (Ames)'. The transport proteins of these leptospires were identified and compared using bioinformatics to gain an appreciation for which proteins may be related to pathogenesis and sap

Clawing through evolution: toxin diversification and convergence in the ancient lineage Chilopoda (centipedes).

Despite the staggering diversity of venomous animals, there seems to be remarkable convergence in regard to the types of proteins used as toxin scaffolds. However, our understanding of this fascinating area of evolution has been hampered by the narrow taxonomical range studied, with entire groups of venomous animals remaining almost completely unstudied. One such group is centipedes, class Chilopoda, which emerged about 440 Ma and may represent the oldest terrestrial venomous lineage next to scorpions. Here, we provide the first comprehensive insight into the chilopod "venome" and its evolutio

The evolution of locomotor rhythmicity in tetrapods.

Differences in rhythmicity (relative variance in cycle period) among mammal, fish, and lizard feeding systems have been hypothesized to be associated with differences in their sensorimotor control systems. We tested this hypothesis by examining whether the locomotion of tachymetabolic tetrapods (birds and mammals) is more rhythmic than that of bradymetabolic tetrapods (lizards, alligators, turtles, salamanders). Species averages of intraindividual coefficients of variation in cycle period were compared while controlling for gait and substrate. Variance in locomotor cycle periods is significant

Chlamydia pneumoniae: modern insights into an ancient pathogen.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is an enigmatic human and animal pathogen. Originally discovered in association with acute human respiratory disease, it is now associated with a remarkably wide range of chronic diseases as well as having a cosmopolitan distribution within the animal kingdom. Molecular typing studies suggest that animal strains are ancestral to human strains and that C. pneumoniae crossed from animals to humans as the result of at least one relatively recent zoonotic event. Whole genome analyses appear to support this concept - the human strains are highly conserved whereas the single ani

Understanding the evolution of human pigmentation: recent contributions from population genetics.

Variation in human skin and hair color is one of the most striking aspects of human variability, and explaining this diversity is one of the central questions of human biology. Only in the last decade or so has it been realistically possible to address this question experimentally using population genetic approaches. On the basis of earlier studies in mice, and on studies in humans with various Mendelian disorders, many of the genes underpinning population variation in skin color have been identified. More recently, genome-wide approaches have identified other loci that appear to contribute to

Evolution, health and disease--Darwinian approaches to medicine.

It is widely recognized that the evolution theory has contributed to understanding genetics and infectious disease. More generally, however, training in evolutionary thinking can help both biomedical researchers and clinicians in asking useful questions they might not come up with otherwise. In this paper, evolutionary insights with clinical applications are discussed on allergy and cancer, the causes of atherosclerosis, antibiotic use and resistance, the polymorphic Major Histocompatibility Complex, the bubonic plague bottleneck and symptoms versus disease. Those examples make a strong case f

Molecular evaluation of nominal species in the Ceratitis fasciventris, C. anonae, C. rosa complex (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Ceratitis fasciventris, C. anonae and C. rosa form a complex of economically important fruit fly pests infesting a variety of crops in African countries. Hitherto only adult males of these species can be distinguished easily by morphological characters. Other stages cannot, and for some taxa the taxonomic interpretation and species boundaries remain unclear. In order to clarify phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic status of these species, sequences of mitochondrial (16S, COI, ND6) and nuclear markers (period, ITS1) were analysed in specimens of the three morphospecies throughout the distri

Polyploid speciation did not confer instant reproductive isolation in Capsella (Brassicaceae).

Polyploid formation is a major mode of sympatric speciation in flowering plants. Unlike other speciation processes, polyploidization is often assumed to confer instant reproductive isolation. Shared polymorphism across ploidy levels has therefore often been attributed to multiple polyploid origins, whereas the alternative hypothesis of introgressive hybridization has rarely been rigorously tested. Here, we sequence 12 nuclear loci representing 6 genes duplicated by polyploidy in 92 accessions of the tetraploid Capsella bursa-pastoris together with the corresponding loci in 21 accessions of its

Co-evolution and exploitation of host cell signaling pathways by bacterial pathogens.

Bacterial pathogens have evolved by combinations of gene acquisition, deletion, and modification, which increases their fitness. Additionally, bacteria are able to evolve in "quantum leaps" via the ability to promiscuously acquire new genes. Many bacterial pathogens - especially Gram-negative enteric pathogens - have evolved mechanisms by which to subvert signal transduction pathways of eukaryotic cells by expressing genes that mimic or regulate host protein factors involved in a variety of signaling cascades. This results in the ability to cause diseases ranging from tumor formation in plants

[Virulence determinants and its evolution of the genus Listeria].

The genus Listeria consists of six species: L. monocytogenes, L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. ivanovii, L. seeligeri and L. grayi. Two of the species, L. monocytogenes and L. ivanovii are pathogenic. The heterogeneity of remaining species, previously assumed to be nonpathogenic, regarding their capability of acquiring virulence-associated genes may reflect their potential ability to be causative agents of diseases, especially in immunocompromised mannals. Virulence determinants involved in environmental tolerance, adhesion and invasion of eukaryotic cells and intracellular life function interact

Phylogenetic and evolutionary aspects of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis reveal a long coexistence with animal hosts that explain several biological features of the pathogen.

The habitat of the mycelial saprobic form of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, which produces the infectious propagula, has not been determined and has proven difficult for mycologists to describe. The fungus has been rarely isolated from the environment, the disease has a prolonged latency period and no outbreaks have been reported. These facts have precluded the adoption of preventive measures to avoid infection. The confirmation of natural infections in nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) with P. brasiliensis, in high frequency and wide geographic distribution, has opened new avenues

Consequences of the evolution of the GABA(A) receptor gene family.

1. This paper reviews the evolution of the family of genes present in mammals and other vertebrates that encode gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A (GABA(A)) receptors, which are the major inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors in the central nervous system (CNS). In mammals, 16 different polypeptides (alpha1-alpha6, beta1-beta3, gamma1-gamma3, delta, epsilon, pi, and theta) have been identified, using recombinant DNA techniques, each of which is encoded by a distinct gene. The products of these genes assemble in diverse combinations to form a variety of receptor subtypes that have different

Role of recombination in evolution of enteroviruses.

Enteroviruses, members of the Picornaviridae family, comprise a large (over 70 serotypes) group of viruses that are ubiquitous in nature, infect different species and cause a wide range of diseases. Human enteroviruses were recently classified into five species, human enterovirus A-D and poliovirus. Recombination has long been known to be an important property of poliovirus genetics. Recently, several publications demonstrated that recombination is extremely frequent also in non-polio enteroviruses, and allows independent evolution of enterovirus genome fragments even on a microevolutionary sc

Fundamental principles and applications of natural gas hydrates.

Natural gas hydrates are solid, non-stoichiometric compounds of small gas molecules and water. They form when the constituents come into contact at low temperature and high pressure. The physical properties of these compounds, most notably that they are non-flowing crystalline solids that are denser than typical fluid hydrocarbons and that the gas molecules they contain are effectively compressed, give rise to numerous applications in the broad areas of energy and climate effects. In particular, they have an important bearing on flow assurance and safety issues in oil and gas pipelines, they o

Eco-evolutionary dynamics of a shifting porcine parvoviruses (PPV1-PPV8) ecosystem reveal dichotomous selection pressures.

Porcine parvoviruses (PPVs) constitute a complex viral ecosystem. However, the genetic structure and evolutionary dynamics of currently circulating PPV populations remain poorly characterized. A large-scale genomic survey in China (1,055 genomes; 863 samples; 2021-2024) reveal a profound ecosystem shift, with PPVs detected in 212/863 samples (24.57%) Novel species (PPV7, 16.45%; PPV6, 9.62%; and PPV2, 8.82%) now dominate the niche previously occupied by classical PPV1 (3.13%). This new landscape is defined by pervasive multi-species co-infection (129/212, 60.85%), including 61 cases with ≥ 3 s

Evolutionary Pattern of Interferon Alpha Genes in Bovidae and Genetic Diversity of IFNAA in the Bovine Genome.

Interferons are secretory proteins induced in response to specific extracellular stimuli which stimulate intra- and intercellular networks for regulating innate and acquired immunity, resistance to viral infections, and normal and tumor cell survival and death. Type 1 interferons plays a major role in the CD8 T-cell response to viral infection. The genomic analysis carried out here for type I interferons within Bovidae family shows that cattle, bison, water buffalo, goat, and sheep (all Bovidae), have different number of genes of the different subtypes, with a large increase in the numbers, co

A transcriptome-based phylogenetic study of hard ticks (Ixodidae).

Hard ticks are widely distributed across temperate regions, show strong variation in host associations, and are potential vectors of a diversity of medically important zoonoses, such as Lyme disease. To address unresolved issues with respect to the evolutionary relationships among certain species or genera, we produced novel RNA-Seq data sets for nine different Ixodes species. We combined this new data with 18 data sets obtained from public databases, both for Ixodes and non-Ixodes hard tick species, using soft ticks as an outgroup. We assembled transcriptomes (for 27 species in total), predic
