A comparison of foot kinematics in people with normal- and flat-arched feet using the Oxford Foot Model.

Foot posture is thought to influence predisposition to overuse injuries of the lower limb. Although the mechanisms underlying this proposed relationship are unclear, it is thought that altered foot kinematics may play a role. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate differences in foot motion between people with normal- and flat-arched feet using the Oxford Foot Model (OFM). Foot posture in 19 participants was documented as normal-arched (n=10) or flat-arched (n=9) using a foot screening protocol incorporating measurements from weightbearing antero-posterior and lateral foot radiograp…

Scientific assessment of over-the-counter foot orthoses to determine their effects on pain, balance, and foot deformities.

BACKGROUND: A scientific study was conducted to evaluate the effects of non-custom-molded (over-the-counter) foot orthoses. METHODS: Several parameters were examined, including foot, knee, hip, and back pain; balance; and reduction in flexible deformities, such as hammer toes and hallux valgus. Wherever possible, objective measurements were used, including measurements of shifts in center of pressure to assess balance and changes in bone position examined on radiographs. Forty-one individuals were analyzed using one of two types of prefabricated, non-custom insoles. Insoles were fit by an ass…

Deep foot infections in patients with diabetes and foot ulcer: an entity with different characteristics, treatments, and prognosis.

We report findings in 223 consecutively included people with diabetes, foot ulcer and a deep foot infection treated by a multidisciplinary diabetic foot care team at the University Hospital in Lund, Sweden. The aim of the present study was to evaluate type and characteristics of deep foot infections and their relation to choice of treatment and outcome. Three different groups of deep foot infections were identified; osteomyelitis only (n = 112), deep soft tissue infection only (n = 46) and combined infections (osteomyelitis and deep soft tissue infection, n = 65). The various types of deep foo…

Analysis of toe pressures under the foot while dynamic standing on one foot in healthy subjects.

Dynamic balance is a crucial element in performing many activities of daily living. The one-leg stance test is a valuable test for balance i … e (percent of body weight/cm2) under the toes. The Balance System includes actuators which move the foot platform back and forth (+/- 40 mm perturbation at 0.25 Hz) at an average velocity of 20 mm/sec. The subjects were asked to balance on each leg for 20 seconds. The trials were repeated on the opposite foot after 5 minutes of rest. The dynamic postur …

[Replacement of skin defects on the foot with dorsal foot artery pedicle island flap (author's transl)].

On the basis of four known cases, authors describe the art. dors. pedis pedicle island flap method (McCraw, Furlow) for replacement of skin defects on the foot. The pedicle of the flap is composed of the art dors. pedis, the vena comitans and the peroneal nerve. The flap is suitable for replacement of skin defects around the external or internal malleolus, on the margin of the sole and heal, over the tendon Achilles as well as on the anterior surface of the lower third leg. Vascular anatomy of the island is described and details of the technics for the formation of island are given. Beside the…

Side-Step Cutting Foot Biomechanics and Intrinsic Foot Muscle Sizes in People With Chronic Ankle Instability.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral ankle sprains commonly occur during directional changes and often lead to chronic ankle instability (CAI) associated with altered movement patterns, muscle weakness and atrophy. This study aimed to compare foot joint biomechanics during cutting among individuals with CAI, copers, and uninjured controls and to explore the relationship between intrinsic foot muscle sizes and functional status. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Sixty-nine recreationally active males (25.4 ± 4 years) were categorised by perceived instability and self-reported function. Ankle and foot joint kin…

Periosteal distraction-related treatments for diabetic foot/diabetic foot ulcer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Periosteal distraction (PD) has been used as a salvage strategy for diabetic foot (DF) and diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), yet its relative effectiveness compared with other approaches is still unclear. METHODS: Up to March 17, 2026, seven databases were searched for comparative studies assessing PD-related treatments in DF/DFU. Twenty-six studies were included for qualitative synthesis, and 14 contributed to the primary comparative evidence set. The studies were organized into three categories: PD-based interventions versus conventional treatment, pure PD versus transverse tibial tran…

Analyses of transcutaneous oxygen pressure values stratified for foot angiosomes to predict diabetic foot ulcer healing.

AIMS: Previous research suggested that diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) location could affect transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) values following the angiosome concept. Up to our knowledge no studies have yet analyzed if the location of a diabetic foot ulcer can be a confounding factor that modifies TcPO2 values. The primary aim of this study was to compare the potential healing prognosis of TcPO2 differentiated for diabetic foot ulcers in different angiosome locations. METHODS: a 2-years observational cohort prospective study was performed in 81 patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Transcutaneou…

The infected diabetic foot: Can serum biomarkers predict osteomyelitis after hospital discharge for diabetic foot infections?

The aim of this study is to evaluate serum biomarkers to monitor high-risk patients for reinfection of bone. Thirty-five patients were prospectively enrolled with moderate to severe diabetic foot infections with suspicion of osteomyelitis. Bone samples were obtained for culture and histology. Clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients were compared using χ2 square test. Biomarkers (white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, c-reactive protein, procalcitonin, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1) were assessed at baseline, 3, and 6 weeks after…

Maintenance of longitudinal foot arch after different mid/hind-foot arthrodesis procedures in a cadaveric model.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the optimal treatment of flatfoot remains inconclusive. Our objectives were to understand the effect of different arthrodeses on maintenance of foot arch and provide experimental basis for rational selection in treatment of flatfoot. METHODS: Sixteen fresh-frozen cadaver feet amputated above the ankle along with a section of leg were studied from ten males and six females. We used standard clinical techniques and hardware for making the arthrodeses. Plantar pressure in the medial and lateral longitudinal arch distribution was measured with a plantar pressure mapping sys…

A new model of plastic ankle foot orthosis (FAFO (II)) against spastic foot and genu recurvatum.

A plastic ankle foot orthosis (AFO) was developed, referred to as functional ankle foot orthosis Type 2 (FAFO (II)), which can deal with genu recurvatum and the severe spastic foot in walking. Clinical trials were successful for all varus and drop feet, and for most cases of genu recurvatum. Electromyogram studies showed that the FAFO (II) reduced the spasticity of gastrocnemius and hamstring muscles and activated the quadricep muscles. Gait analysis revealed a reduction of the knee angles in the stance phase on the affected side when using the FAFO (II). Mechanical stress tests showed excelle…
