X-ray computed tomography-aided diagnosis of nasal adenocarcinoma, with extension to the skull and central nervous system, in a dog.

A dog with tonoclonic seizures, disorientation, and tetraparesis was evaluated by use of skull radiography. An advanced, highly aggressive process was centered within the caudal portion of the right nasal cavity. X-ray computed tomography further defined the mass to be occupying the caudal portion of the nasal cavity and frontal sinuses, with concurrent involvement of the adjacent turbinates and frontal, maxillary, and palatine bones. Despite the aggressive nature of the process, no alteration to the external contour of the cranium or nose was observed. Histologic examination revealed well-dif

Optimized Bifrontal Craniotomy: Reducing Risks and Boosting Surgical Results.

BACKGROUND: Bifrontal craniotomy is one of the most common surgical approaches for dealing with anterior skull base lesions. However, this procedure occasionally presents complications like anosmia, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, infection, and cosmetic problems. Although previous reports suggested various solutions, there remains a need to further refine the procedure to ensure better outcomes. In this paper, we introduce our revised method and examine the clinical results. METHODS: Our protocol pays attention to preventing avulsion of the olfactory bulb by brain movement, such as avoidi

[Fibrous dysplasia of the frontal sinus: a case report].

Fibrous dysplasia is a rare and indolent benign tumor of bone. Although it is a benign tumor, it has malignant transformation potential. Fibrous dysplasia can involve a single or multiple bones. The maxilla and mandible are the most common sites in the head and neck region. Paranasal sinus involvement is rare. Surgical excision is the preferred treatment of patients with symptomatic fibrous dysplasia. In this article, a 54-year-old male patient diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia of the frontal bone is presented.

Bilateral otorrhagia and orbital hematoma complicating subgaleal hematoma.

A patient with bilateral otorrhagia and orbital hematoma following massive subgaleal hematoma is reported for the first time. The pathogenesis of the extensive subgaleal hematoma as well as the production of these unusual complications is discussed. This case would suggest that the weakest points in the attachment of the epicranial aponeurosis to the base of the calvarium are its attachments to the squamous part of the temporal bone and to the frontal bone under the eyebrow.

Pott's puffy tumour and intracranial complications of frontal sinusitis in pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: A Pott's puffy tumour is a subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone secondary to frontal sinusitis. Intracranial complications are seen in approximately 40 per cent of cases and are potentially life-threatening; such complications have not previously been reported in pregnancy. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old woman at 35 weeks' gestation presented with a history of frontal headaches and swelling, periorbital oedema, pain and chemosis. Imaging confirmed Pott's puffy tumour with right-sided epidural empyema and periorbital cellulitis. A multidisciplinary team was inv…

[Sincipital meningoencephaloceles: Clinical and surgical considerations].

Sincipital meningoencephaloceles (MECs) are rare congenital malformations characterized by the herniation of brain or meningeal tissue through an opening in the anterior floor of the skull base. These malformations always affect the frontal bone, specifically the glabellar region and the naso-frontal angle. A collaboration between Médecins du Monde and the Children's Surgical Center in Phnom Penh has enabled the treatment of over four hundred cases over twenty years. Patients typically have not undergone radiological examinations, with surgical strategies based on clinical and intraoperative o…

Primary lymphoblastic B-cell lymphoma of the cranial dura mater: a case report and review of the literature.

Primary lymphomas of the cranial dura mater are rare. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue extranodal marginal zone lymphomas are the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas that present as primary cranial dura tumors. A 33 year-old male presented with a 3-month history of a growing lump in the right frontal area. Neuroimaging studies demonstrated an extra-axial, broad-based mass with a dural tail in the right frontal bone convexity. Biopsy led to the diagnosis of localized dural precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. The patient was treated with a combination of chemotherapy and radioth…

Regional differences of dura osteoinduction: squamous dura induces osteogenesis, sutural dura induces chondrogenesis and osteogenesis.

Dura plays an important role in calvarial morphogenesis. However, precisely what that role is remains unclear. We present here in vivo evidence that dura without other central nervous system components induces both chondrogenesis and osteogenesis. The mechanism is, at least in part, by proximate tissue interaction. The objectives of this experiment were to answer the following: (1) Can dura actually induce osteogenesis without the influence of the underlying brain? (2) What are the requirements of this dura-induced heterotopic osteogenesis? (3) What are the differences between dura underlying

Spontaneous pneumocephalus associated with pneumocele of the frontal sinus.

BACKGROUND: Pneumoceles of the paranasal sinuses are a very rare condition; characterized by a distended air-filled paranasal sinus extending beyond the margins of the paranasal bone, with bony defects and extension of air into the surrounding soft tissues. Also, spontaneous pneumo-cephalus is a rare condition which represented only 0.6% in the largest reported series of pneumocephalus. Although pneumocephalus caused by sinogenic origins, such as osteoma, has been reported, spontaneous pneumocephalus has not been reported as a complication associated with pneumocele of the frontal sinus. Comparison of the Relapse Ratio and Osteogenesis Between 1-Piece and 2-Piece Fronto-Orbital Distraction Osteogenesis Among Patients With Bilateral Craniosynostosis in Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: Fronto-orbital distraction osteogenesis (FODO), used to correct bilateral coronal craniosynostosis (BCS), is grossly classified into 1-piece and 2-piece FODO. One-piece FODO osteomizes the frontal and supraorbital bones as one block by preserving the attachment between the dura mater and bone, whereas the 2-piece FODO detaches bone segments from the underlying dura mater and reshapes them. This study aimed to determine whether separating the bone-dura attachment would affect osteogenesis and the relapse of the deformity and to compare the surgical outcomes between 1-piece and 2-pie

Incidence of anatomical variations according to the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC) and their coincidence with radiological sings of opacification.

BACKGROUND: The endonasal access to the frontal recess and sinus may be complicated by a variety of anatomical variations. Previous classifications of these variants were characterized by proper names or position information without anatomical reference. The IFAC is intended to simplify the classification of anatomical variations of the frontoethmoidal complex. The aim of this study was to analyse a representative number of sinus CT scans to assess the incidence of anatomical variations according to the IFAC and to compare the results with previous classifications. In addition, the coincidence

Customized 3D Allogenic Bone Blocks for Mandibular Buccal-Bone Reconstruction Increase Resistance to Tongue-Protrusion Forces: A Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The impact of tongue protrusion forces on the formation of malocclusions is well documented in academic literature. In the case of bone dehiscence of the buccal wall in front of the lower frontal teeth, this process may be even more pronounced. Augmentation with 3D customized allogenic bone blocks (CABB) has been proposed as a potential solution for treating such defects. The objective was to assess the impact of bone block adjustment accuracy on the resistance of teeth to protrusion forces at various stages of alveolar bone loss. METHODS: A finite element analysis (FEM) was condu

[Endonasal, microscopically controlled frontal sinus surgery].

BACKGROUND: The anatomic variation of the frontal sinus and frontal recess can create both a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Most cases of frontal sinus disease can now be treated by endoscopic approaches. For refractory cases or those with severe pathology, the microscopically controlled drainage (MCD) operation has at times been successful and spared the patient the morbidity of an external approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate microscopically controlled frontal sinus surgery in these difficult cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective analysis was performed on the efficacy o

Residual ridge atrophy in complete denture wearers and relationship with densitometric values of a cervical spine: a hierarchical regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: The rate of residual ridge atrophy (RRR) and its association with mineral density of other bones have not yet been fully explained. OBJECTIVE: To measure RRR over a 5-year period in complete denture wearers and relate it to the density of a cervical spine (CSBD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients (different gender, age, body mass index, duration of edentulousness (DE) and different denture-wearing habits) participated. A copper stepwedge was attached to the cassette, and 50 lateral radiograms met the criteria to be included. RESULTS: A significant decrease in vertical he
