BACKGROUND: Vesicoureteral reflux may lead to renal parenchymal scarring (RPS) by causing recurrent pyelonephritis. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is considered to be a new marker for fibrosis, which plays a role in the pathogenesis of RPS. Serum Gal-3 levels in patients with RPS were examined in our study, and it was attempted to elucidate the role of serum Gal-3 levels in the diagnosis and pathophysiology of RPS.
METHODS: The study included 154 patients with RPS between 4 and 18 years of age. Serum creatinine levels and estimated glomerular filtration rates of all patients were normal. Patients were di

RATIONALE: Ethanol ablation (EA) is recommended as the primary treatment for benign thyroid cysts and its use is increasing. Although complications, such as pain, hoarseness, and hematoma, have been reported after EA, implantation of benign thyroid tissue has not been previously reported. Here, we present a case of intranodal implantation of benign thyroid tissue as a late complication of EA.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 46-year-old man underwent EA for a benign cystic nodule in the left thyroid lobe and developed a thyroid abscess after several days. The patient was treated with incision and drainage

PURPOSE: Prostaglandin-mediated inflammatory reactions play a major role in different cancers. Recently, it has been observed that prostaglandin E2-receptor 3 (EP3) might be an independent prognostic factor for overall survival in cervical and endometrial cancer. The role of EP3 expression in ovarian cancer is currently unknown.
METHODS: EP3 expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in 156 patient samples using the IR-scoring system. Expression levels were correlated with clinical and pathological parameters and with overall survival (OS) to assess for prognostic relevance. Data analysi

The aim of this review was to summarize recent advances in the understanding of the clinical and autoantibody phenotypes, their associated outcomes and the pathogenesis of the juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (JIIMs). The major clinical and autoantibody phenotypes in children have many features similar to those in adults, and each has distinct demographic and clinical features and associated outcomes. The most common myositis autoantibodies in JIIM patients are anti-p155/140, anti-MJ and anti-MDA5. Higher mortality has been associated with overlap myositis as well as with the presen

Integrity of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is essential for maintaining the normal structure and function of connective tissues. ECM is secreted locally by cells and organized into a complex meshwork providing physical support to cells, tissues, and organs. Initially thought to act only as a scaffold, the ECM is now known to provide a myriad of signals to cells regulating all aspects of their phenotype from morphology to differentiation. Matricellular proteins are a class of ECM related molecules defined through their ability to modulate cell-matrix interactions. Matricellular proteins are ex

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Galectin 3 (GAL-3) is a beta galactoside binding lectin that has different roles in normal and pathophysiological conditions. GAL-3 has been associated with heart failure and was linked to increased risk of death in a number of studies. GAL-3 was found to be up regulated in animal models of heart failure as well as myocardial infarction (MI). The objective of his study is to test if high GAL-3 after myocardial infarction has a protective role on the heart through its anti-apoptotic and anti-necrotic functions.
METHODS: Male C57B6/J mice and GAL-3 knockout (KO) mice were used

Coronary microvascular obstruction (CMVO) significantly increases the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, no studies to date have specifically examined the relationship between intracoronary thrombus composition and CMVO formation in AMI patients. This proof-of-concept study aims to investigate the association between coronary thrombus composition and CMVO during AMI. This study enrolled fifty-one patients diagnosed with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent emergency percutaneous coronar

BACKGRUOUND: Insulin resistance (IR) disrupts hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism, contributing to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and progression to severe liver complications. Galectin-3-binding protein (LGALS3BP) is a secreted glycoprotein implicated in inflammation and metabolic disorders. Elevated LGALS3BP levels are associated with MASLD and type 2 diabetes (T2D), but its role in IR remains unclear.
METHODS: LGALS3BP-deficient models were used to investigate its role in IR and inflammation. Glucose metabolism and insulin signaling were assessed in high-

IgG4-related cholangitis (IRC) is the major hepatobiliary manifestation of IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder. The pathogenesis of IgG4-RD and IRC is currently viewed as multifactorial, as there is evidence of a genetic predisposition while environmental factors, such as blue-collar work, are major risk factors. Various autoantigens have been described in IgG4-RD, including annexin A11 and laminin 511-E8, proteins which may exert a partially protective function in cholangiocytes by enhancing secretion and barrier function, respectively. For the other recently

NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation triggers inflammation progression in some metabolism disorders, frequently accompanying the up-regulation of galectin-3 (Gal-3). However, the precise mechanisms of Gal-3 activating NLRP3 inflammasome remain unclear in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Here, male C57BL/6J mice were fed by high-fat diet (HFD) for 32 weeks to induce NASH and then the hepatic damage, cytokines, Gal-3 and TLR4 expression, and NLRP3 inflammasome activation were examined. Such indicators were similarly determined when HepG2 cells were co-incubated with pa
